Topic: What is the diffrence between Top notes, Middle notes and Base notes?

Hello dear Fragranticans!
Can anyone please tell me what is the diffrence between Top notes, Middle notes and Base notes?
I really need it.
Thanks!

Hi there and welcome lucky-boy!

Most perfumes metamorphasize through 3 different phases during wear =

The top notes are what you smell when you first apply the perfume.

The middle notes reveal themselves after a little while.

The base notes are what scents remain on the skin for a long time, until you can no longer smell the perfume.

This process takes 2-3 hours to happen.

Hope this helps!

Some scent molecules are heavier than others.  The lighter ones will lift off from the skin earlier, entering the air; that is when you smell them.  Citruses, for example, are smaller molecules and so are often used as top notes. Heavier molecules, like sandalwood, will sit on the skin longer, lifting off more slowly, so they are often used as base notes.

However I recently read this article that says the top-middle-base pyramid structure is only one of the structures used in perfumes today.  It's an interesting article.  Link:

Re: What is the diffrence between Top notes, Middle notes and Base notes?

in natural perfumery:

usually top notes consist of fruity or lemony notes (lemon, neroli, orange, mandarin etc).  also herbs. they give a first impression of the perfume and they evaporate quickly.

the middle ones usually are the "heart" of the perfume. here are mostly flowery notes and spices.

the base notes are usually the ingredients that "fix" the perfume and make it more lasting. they also give the perfume depth. they can be wood notes, mosses, vanilla, resins, musk, civet, amber.

This is changeability, smoothness scents in Yours skin minutes after minutes. Like composition fragrance.

She's like the wind.

Re: What is the diffrence between Top notes, Middle notes and Base notes?

Great link. It helps explain to me why I don't usually get distinct beginning, middle, and end changes in my colognes. Well, my nose might have something to do with it too.

A lot of the reviews on this site come across to me as someone reading the fragrance pyramid and writing a review to fit into it. Sometimes, my experience is so linear in comparison that I think they are reviewing without every wearing the scent on their own skin. That being said, I understand the ingredients of a fragrance will interact differently with a persons skin chemistry.

I also think the fragrance houses want to be as mysterious as possible with the exact composition of their fragrances. Too much money is put into developing the latest, greatest scent to just spell it out for the competition.

Thanks for the link 30 roses!
