Topic: For the ladies- perfume and hormones?

Have any of you found that your perfumes smell slightly different on you at certain times? Last week I tried Burberry Touch and it smelled really sharp and I wasn't sure I liked it, I tried it again today (same bottle) and its much softer and creamy (as I think it should smell), so I got to wondering maybe our skin and/or noses are different at that time?

All the time..... These 2 especially.... http://www.fragrantica.com/board/img/smilies/roll.png

http://fimgs.net/images/perfume/m.819.jpg Burberry Burberry Brit  Lasting power changes with this one, smell doesn't. Sometimes it holds... other times it lasts but 2 hours.
http://fimgs.net/images/perfume/m.53.jpg Guerlain Shalimar sometimes sweet vanilla/amber...other times heavy insense and leather.

Re: For the ladies- perfume and hormones?

sofababe started this thread meaning the time when we women have our period.

It makes perfect sense to me that hormones would influence how the skin smells ... I just do not have the chemistry/biology background to explain it.

I wonder whether during ovulation time, there would be an increase of hormones and therefore scents smell stronger, in order to attract a male ?

During pregnancy, less of that, because the body is now busy with the baby growing ?

After menopause, less of that, because no more babies possible ?

After historectomy, less of that, because of no more babies possible ?

I purposely used simplistic terms, to get the message across.

Re: For the ladies- perfume and hormones?

Yes, in my experience, hormones definitley affect how some perfumes smell on my skin. I have never been able to determine if it's the actualy smell or just the way I perceive the smell, though.

http://fimgs.net/images/perfume/m.267.jpg Calvin Klein Truth I cannot wear this at that time of the month. It goes sharp and sour, like the perfume went bad. Other times, though, it is fine.

http://fimgs.net/images/perfume/m.9031.jpg Luciano Soprani Luciano Soprani This one, too. It is so beautiful but it will take on that sharp sour note if it's the wrong time.

Re: For the ladies- perfume and hormones?

I absolutely agree.  Sometimes http://fimgs.net/images/perfume/m.2416.jpg Michael Kors Michael smells gorgeous on me - a unqiue mix of flowers and sweet musk.  Other times, it smells like... bananas.  Go figure!

Re: For the ladies- perfume and hormones?

Hormones definitely affect my perception of smell. When estrogen levels are high (typically during pregnancy, but also right before ovulation) I get a metallic taste in my mouth when wearing certain perfumes and found this very obvious with http://fimgs.net/images/perfume/m.8766.jpg Thierry Mugler Womanity (kind of a coincidence huh? Maybe there's something in it that only affect women's hormones). But I also happen to suffer from endometriosis which means I have estrogen dominance/progesterone deficiency. Perhaps Womanity has a high level of xenoestogens or chemicals that create synthetic estrogens...?? Anyway, I try to stay away from this one. http://www.fragrantica.com/board/img/smilies/visslar.gif

Also, during my period I am prone to migraines so I try to steer clear of strong, sweet perfumes or heavy white florals.

Btw I have endometriosis too.

Sorry to hear that peachykeen... but it does make one wonder about the hormone factor in this perfume! Maybe we've stumbled on something!!

Udaria, there seems to be a lot of truth to your theories:

Re: For the ladies- perfume and hormones?

During my period, perfumes won't last on my skin! No matter how heavy the perfume or how much I spray, they disappear very quickly! A friend of mine has the same experience with periods & perfumes.

Re: For the ladies- perfume and hormones?

I'm glad I'm not alone in this. The Burberry smells completely different this week than it did last week, and having thought about it I was struggling to enjoy any of my perfumes last week.

I will make a note to take notice next month to see if I have the same problem. I'm still curious as to whether this is due to a change in my skin/secretions, or a change of sensitivity in my sense of smell. The best way to tell, I guess, is to ask someone else, if your perfume smells normal to them, it must be your own nose rather than your skin.

Thank you for all your responses ladies, its interesting to share your experiences.

Sorry to be hijacking this thread with posts! Anyway, thought you might be interested in how the skin changes during the menstrual cycle. Certainly explains why skin eats perfume during your period: http://www.squidoo.com/skincarecycle

So it seems that BOTH skin chemistry and sense of smell affect your perception and development of perfume during different phases of your cycle... booo hoo...

Re: For the ladies- perfume and hormones?

I don't know about my "skin chemistry" those days... but definitely I can't even smell the caps of my favourite fragrances those days without feeling nauseous http://www.fragrantica.com/board/img/smilies/usch.gif

Re: For the ladies- perfume and hormones?

I've never noticed any changes in perfumes on my skin. In fact, pretty much every perfume smells the same on my skin. Unless I spray some crazy strong spicy scent, all perfumes (no matter what the notes are) just turn to the same generic floral scent. Even if it isn't a floral perfume. http://www.fragrantica.com/board/img/smilies/hmm.png

Re: For the ladies- perfume and hormones?

I have a similar experience. On my period, i cant spray perfume - PERIOD! One of my favorites - Ed hardy - smells like fake plasticy cloying crap! but when Im not on my period, it reminds me a LOT of miss dior cherie. Another favorite, Shi smells very sharp. And gives me a migraine. http://www.fragrantica.com/board/img/smilies/24.gif

Re: For the ladies- perfume and hormones?

Totally. sometimes my favorite will smell off.

Re: For the ladies- perfume and hormones?

Hell yes....!

During different times in my cycle scents smell different on me, and my SO notices too.

Also, having major surgery changed my skin chemistry drastically (and my sense of smell and taste).  Fumes that I used to despise I now adore.  Examples are:

http://fimgs.net/images/perfume/m.219.jpg Dior Hypnotic Poison

http://fimgs.net/images/perfume/m.6524.jpg Prada L`Eau Ambree

http://fimgs.net/images/perfume/m.4410.jpg Juicy Couture Viva la Juicy

Some that I liked on paper but reeked on my skin now smell fantastic - and again, my SO has confirmed this so it's not just my own perception.  Example:

I found I prefer to wear my summery-lighter scents... or no scent at all http://www.fragrantica.com/board/img/smilies/va.gif
