Topic: Shower Gel: What the... ?

I want to like shower gel. I really do. I hear it's better for your skin, more sanitary, smells better. But I just can't feel clean! Even with a loufa thing, all the lather gets trapped inside the loufa and I end up just scrubbing myself raw with barely any lather. I don't feel clean; it's kinda slimy. And I guess I'm too frugal to use a ton of it to get more lather? But I can't help being a bar soap-er. Do you guys/how do you guys use shower gel?

Re: Shower Gel: What the... ?

Why not try any by Dove? They're creamy and lather more easily and leave my skin moisturized for days. They're also inexpensive.

New SWAP list here...

Re: Shower Gel: What the... ?

I don't like shower gel either - it feels cold and sticky at first and I don't feel clean also. What I do like is scented bar soap for my face and creamy body wash such as Dove Cream Oil - it lathers richly and I feel moisturized and fresh. Limited brands/scents though.

Re: Shower Gel: What the... ?

If you're using a true, natural loofah, lather will get trapped inside. I recommend a plastic poof (even though I know they're not the most masculine of bathroom equipment) or exfoliating gloves (the best). I get a ton of lather from poofs and gloves. The exfoliating gloves are heavy duty, so be careful when you use them. It's very possible to overdo it with them.

Your choice of shower gel matters too. There are many out there that do not rinse cleanly and feel absolutely disgusting. I think I've tried Softsoap, Neutrogena Acne Wash, and Dial shower gels, and I hated them all. Gave them away.

You may have to experiment with shower gels from different brands. Buy a few travel size ones to try if you still want to find a good one.

I do like the Dove ones. They rinse cleanly but definitely not super-squeaky-clean like bar soap.

The ingredients in bar soap that make it into a solid bar are what dry your skin out. They can be very rough on skin. When winter or air conditioning season hits, you'll find your skin doesn't retain moisture as well and gets that stinging dryness.

You might have to relinquish some of your desire to feel that squeak. You're still plenty clean without it.

BTW: I use Paula's Choice All-over Hair & Body Shampoo.

Re: Shower Gel: What the... ?

Yes I use either of the following: AXE : Phoenix,Excite,Kilo,Snake Peel,Dark Temptation,Shock,Irish Spring or Dial in Spring Water,Grape seed,or Cherry seed. These all lather perfectly and will leave you feeling clean and refreshed! I've used bar soap in the past but it just made me sticky feeling and clean but not fully clean! Try some of these you won't be disappointed!

Re: Shower Gel: What the... ?

I have been using shower gels forever, probably all my life, can't remember my family buying bar soaps when I was a kid, everything was in liquid form. But recently I got into using bars. I don't think liquid is in any way better for your skin. I have quite dry skin and bars don't dry me up. I really like the dove bars and when I get bored of their scent I use something handmade like lush. I say use whatever makes you feel better.

That said, while I used  shower gels, the best thing I found was the poofs pollyjean mentioned. They lather like mad and are of course more sanitary than natural loofahs.

Re: Shower Gel: What the... ?

Yeah I use a plastic loufa. I dunno it's just not heavy duty enough I guess. When you're used to the intense clean feeling of bar soap, a mild (and probably healthier) clean just feels weird. Well I'm just trying to use up my travel bottle of Bath and Body Works Ocean's For Men shower gel, and I'm starting to warm up to the scent and texture of lather so maybe I'll be converted  56

Re: Shower Gel: What the... ?

Re: Shower Gel: What the... ?

Oh, shower gel?  That stuff that I have roughly 9000 bottles of?  And every time a new scent comes out, and it's on sale, and I have a coupon, I buy more?  The stuff that is not slimy at all, but glossy and smells great?  I LOVE IT!

P.S.  I also love a good old bar of Dial Gold.  glad. And that Ocean you are using up is yummy.  And that Lush mint is now on my wish list.  No wonder my husband looks at me and shakes his head.  vissla

Shower gel every morning 365 days a year. I never use soap as i find it can dry out the skin. also shower gels always smell very nice at the moment im using loccitane shower gel grapefruite very nice. I always feel clean after a shower, since i have to showers a day there is no chane not to be clean.

Re: Shower Gel: What the... ?

paulhunter... Have you ever tried any of Philosophy's 3-in-1 bath and shower gels? I have great luck with them; alway produce a beautiful frothy lather, smell great in the shower, leave my skin feeling clean without feeling dry or tight, and no scent left over after you get out of the shower so you don't have to worry about the fragrance of your shower gel interfering with whatever fragrance you decide to wear that day. glad I realize that I am a female and you might have been looking for a males point of view on this, but I just thought I add my suggestion. By the way, my other half (who is a male) also like Philosophy 3-in-1's too! superglad

Re: Shower Gel: What the... ?

I see the Philosophy ones and they seem alright but my Bath and Body Works is actually quite awesome! I'm really warming up to shower gel; frothy, smell good, fun! Showering is my favorite part(s) of the day and now I can't wait to try new shower gels! I'm converted!!

Re: Shower Gel: What the... ?

Hey Paulhunter, try the Citron one next; it's perfect for summer!  Also Classic.  In the fall, try Oak....you will love it, along with Twilighht Woods for Men.

My boys also love the Old Spice ones that feature different countries, like Fiji.  And their favorite is Irish Spring!  If you get the new Intensify one though, be careful on certain body parts, that's all I'm saying.  it's cooling and tingling, LMBO.

Re: Shower Gel: What the... ?

I get the same effect with gel, like I don't feel rinsed clean. We do have hard water here also which contributes. I bought some of this....

Awsome big time! Has a very light scent so it doesn't compete with colognes, has tiny exfoliating grains that feel great and invigorating, moisturizes like crazy, and rinses squeaky clean. You literally feel like you just had a small spa treatment.

When I do use shower gel, I too like this "Lush Dirty" as well. Great for casual sping/summer and was designed to layer with the other Dirty products. Also, try the "Lush Glogg". It is pure spicy cinnamon/merlot. It actually warms up your skin. Perfect for those cold fall/winter nights before bed.

Re: Shower Gel: What the... ?

All the softsoap bodywashes are good and they are cheap.  They even have one that smells like Irish spring soap.  I started using body wash because my skin is dry and it doesn't leave soap scum in the tub/shower.  The health food stores have liquid castile soap (cant remember the name) that will give you the squeaky clean feel but it's a little more expensive.  Your skin is actually cleaner after using shower gell...no soap scum buildup.

Variety is the spice of life.

This + 100. Dove for Men, especially this product, is awesome. I use nothing else.

Re: Shower Gel: What the... ?

I know you were asking the guys, but like whiteshoulders, I'm a bit of a shower gel/cream connoisseur, so I had to chime in.  stolt

I use one of those mesh puffs, & I think it helps to wet that first & then put on the gel & get it lathered up by squishing it w/ your hands, and then using it on your body.  Also, I get the puffs marked as "gentle"; they are at Target or Walgreens.  Even though I buy them because I have sensitive skin, they are good at lathering up the gel.

I like the BBW gels, too.

I've noticed that in the Men's section at the drugstore, the puffs are black, so that's a good option for exfoliating, but still being badass, haha!   rock

Re: Shower Gel: What the... ?

Paulhunter, I am pretty sure BBW Classic shower gel is 75% off right now during their sale.  I think you would like it.

Re: Shower Gel: What the... ?

I would strongly recommend the Aveeno fragrance-free shower gel. I use a dime-size amount and it's definitely more than enough lather! Since it's not scented, it doesn't clash with whatever fragrance I apply. Additionally, it works excellently for shaving.

Re: Shower Gel: What the... ?

I use a wash cloth with Dove on most days and on rare nights maybe some Axe Dark Temptation to mix things up. Afterwards I use Dove Sensitive Skin Cream Oil Body Lotion to help with dry skin or Neutrogena Body Oil Light Sesame.

Re: Shower Gel: What the... ?

I put my shower gel onto my skin and spread it liberaly then I add some to a big sea sponge and go to town! It lathers up magnificently. I don't like the luffa so I use a back scrubing brush with the gel to get all the places I can't reach.

That is on gel days.

The other days I use imported bar soaps from France and Italy. My favorite is Acqua Classica Bosarri Parma soap. Lemons from heaven!

Then I moisterize my dry spots, shins and elbows with Curel.

gee....that sounded so refreshing...think I'll go take another shower.

Re: Shower Gel: What the... ?

Ok so I liked shower gel (because of this page) for about a week. But then I noticed that the use of a loufa was giving me body acne! As soon as I stopped, it cleared up. Which means... sorry shower gel, I'm gonna have to switch back. Time to try out that Dove for Men Purifying Grains stuff!!!

Excellent advice - I've started doing this and it creates more lather with less product. Cheers for the tip, oh!, it's much appreciated.

You're very welcome!  34
