If you're using a true, natural loofah, lather will get trapped inside. I recommend a plastic poof (even though I know they're not the most masculine of bathroom equipment) or exfoliating gloves (the best). I get a ton of lather from poofs and gloves. The exfoliating gloves are heavy duty, so be careful when you use them. It's very possible to overdo it with them.
Your choice of shower gel matters too. There are many out there that do not rinse cleanly and feel absolutely disgusting. I think I've tried Softsoap, Neutrogena Acne Wash, and Dial shower gels, and I hated them all. Gave them away.
You may have to experiment with shower gels from different brands. Buy a few travel size ones to try if you still want to find a good one.
I do like the Dove ones. They rinse cleanly but definitely not super-squeaky-clean like bar soap.
The ingredients in bar soap that make it into a solid bar are what dry your skin out. They can be very rough on skin. When winter or air conditioning season hits, you'll find your skin doesn't retain moisture as well and gets that stinging dryness.
You might have to relinquish some of your desire to feel that squeak. You're still plenty clean without it.
BTW: I use Paula's Choice All-over Hair & Body Shampoo.

One person's signature is someone else's scrubber.
