Topic: any suggestions please - looking for some new favs

Hi, I have a sensitive nose, a bit prone to hay fever however I love wearing perfumes.  My nose is not well educated and I'm only beginning to identify individual notes in a fragrance.  I have learned that aldehydes stink on me and my favs seem to fall into the groups of Cyprahs, citrus aromatics and orientals.  The only florals I like seem to be single scent frags like rose, lily of the valley - Yardley type of stuff.  I love anything with a cologne scent of 4711.

I'm wearing a sample of Chance today and it smells nice and comfortable on me.

I'm having particular trouble finding orientals to wear.  My favs are Dune and Opium.  Opium I can only wear rarely now because the top notes are quite sharp on me but I wear it for the warm dry down.  Dune I can wear anytime and love it.  I like hypnotic poison for the base notes but it's a bit sweet.  I used to like Samsara but can't wear it now -far too sweet.  Maybe my nose is becoming more discerning in middle age?

Are you confused? I am, maybe I should be forget about orientals but I love the dusky, warm dry down.

ps. I'm having trouble editing on the iPad, just wanted to add that I'm turning off my J'Adore Absolute already due to the overwhelming floral start, I mainly like it's smell after a few hours.

Thank you flavorite and niki.  Most of the perfumes mentioned on this thread I have never heard of, I grow impatient to try them all and feel like I'm back in kindergarten learning my ABC's, lol.  You are all very kind and informative.

Try Dior's escale perfumes if you like 4711. They are all cologne-like but with different main notes. They are all very elegant and I find Pondichery and Portofine VERY long lasting.

Re: any suggestions please - looking for some new favs

Fish- I don't think you should give up orientals. If you can get some vintage Samsara, you would be doing yourself a great favor as this smells nothing like the reformulation on the shelves today. I don't know if you have ever smelled this, but it is loaded with Mysore sandalwood and today's version is not good at all.

Have you tried http://fimgs.net/images/perfume/m.6691.jpg Natori Natori ? It has a strong personality like Samsara, Angel, Opium, etc. If you like patchouli, it has a great drydown with that note. A gentle hand is needed like most of your powerhouse frags.

How about another oriental;http://fimgs.net/images/perfume/m.546.jpg Estée Lauder Cinnabar ?

The world is your perfume oyster!

Re: any suggestions please - looking for some new favs

Thank you carnation, amelie, movs and hazelnuttie - lots more reading for me.  It will take some time (and money) to try testers or track down samples but I'm looking forward to it.  A nice hobby to have if I can restrain my spending, lol.

Carnation, funny you mentioned the original Samsara, I don't know if I've tried it.  I had a bottle but (purchased circa 2008) but only recently gave it to my Mum.  Now she is in love with it.

Re: any suggestions please - looking for some new favs

I think I have found my new oriental, it's Obsession for Men.  There are still some interesting orientals recommended above that I want to try, but in the meantime it's OfM - I have a sample and keep going back to it.

I have never tried Obsession for Women, (I've probably smelt it on other people unawares) but according to the notes it doesn't contain much cinnamon and incense.  Any comments on the difference between the two?

Re: any suggestions please - looking for some new favs

I went to compare them side by side, but I think my husband has used all of his up. Obsession for women is really beautiful, vanilla and spice, I think you would like it.  It is not at all as cinnamony as Cinnabar, but that, too, is a beautiful perfume.

have you tried http://fimgs.net/images/perfume/m.4.jpg Givenchy Organza?  You would like it I think. Very warm, not as spicy as Obsession or cinnamon like Organza, warm and lovely.

Don't give up on Orientals; they are so pretty!

Re: any suggestions please - looking for some new favs

Thanks whiteshoulders and fath1ma, I haven't tried Givenchy Organza and of fath1ma's suggestions I have Coco Mademoiselle and love it.  Don't know the others.  More to go on my "to try" list.  Next time I visit the perfume dept I'm going to try a couple, no more than 2 at a time or I get confused.

This one is aromatic yet deep, like an oriental.

Re: any suggestions please - looking for some new favs

I'm not a big fan of orientals, but here are a couple of inexpensive ones you might like. If they're not your favorites, at least they don't cost much. glad

http://fimgs.net/images/perfume/m.6037.jpg Avon Imari

http://fimgs.net/images/perfume/m.1104.jpg Dana Tabu

Tabu smells awful when I first spray it, but it quickly changes to a nice, spicy scent. It's even better if you layer it with a vanilla fragrance. Then it smells like root beer.

http://fimgs.net/images/perfume/m.2998.jpg Coty Muguet de Bois

This is my favorite simple floral scent. Nice, clean, calming and inexpensive. You could also try essential oils in floral scents. I love my lilac oil.
