Dear perfumista's,

I would like to hear your opinion on this edt. I would like to know how you experience this one as the reviews talk about a skank note in it. I know its from the civet and i have scents with civet, but i like to know if you could recommend it. Look at my wardrobe and see if i could like it.

Thanks in advance,  20

Re: Bal a Versailles owners, help please

I adore Bal a Versailles - am wearing it today - and I don't get a skanky note in it at all.

Re: Bal a Versailles owners, help please

Thank you because im hesitated because of that note.

Anyone else please?

Re: Bal a Versailles owners, help please

I know it supposedly has civet in it.  I don't get a skanky or even a civet note at all.  To me it's simply a powdery orange blossom, not terribly interesting.  Unfortunately it also triggers my asthma/allergies.

Re: Bal a Versailles owners, help please

Found a vintage of this. Wasen't getting much, but some powdery amber.

Re: Bal a Versailles owners, help please

Thanks for helping, i wont be purchasing this one. 74

I am not picky, just discerning.

Re: Bal a Versailles owners, help please

I love http://fimgs.net/images/perfume/m.3972.jpg Jean Desprez Bal a Versailles  & don't detect anything "skanky" about it. Sensual yes skanky no.

Re: Bal a Versailles owners, help please

Hi! I think you could like it if you like http://fimgs.net/images/perfume/m.312.jpg Cartier Must de Cartier and http://fimgs.net/images/perfume/m.248.jpg Calvin Klein Obsession, but not sure if you need it - I find Must to be much nicer than Bal a Versaiiles wink

Re: Bal a Versailles owners, help please

This one is a love/ hate scent. Definitely sample before purchase (unless like me you found a bottle for $5- cost that or more to get a sample)

When BaV was introduced in 1962, it was opulent and rich and skanky. The current EDT pales.

Looking at your wardrobe, I think you need to sniff because you have others I consider in the same genre.

Re: Bal a Versailles owners, help please

Bal A Versailles is amazing. It's in my top ten and I've smelled many, many fragrances. It's my favorite animalic/balsamic oriental by far. The current EDT is great, but the Eau de Cologne is even better. Still better is the 80s parfum. Glorious, wonderful stuff that is.

It opens with a sweaty civet note comparable to Kouros or Muscs Koublai Khan. I think that's where it gets all of its negative comments. The note is actually very well balanced, and complements the mildly sweet balsamic base in a novel, exciting, and successful way. It's really quite unique. I love it on myself (I'm a man) but my girlfriend finds it unwearable for her.

Re: Bal a Versailles owners, help please

It is probably one of those good quality , old school fumes that actually develops different on various skin types. ( unlike some boring generic modern fumes that are linear and smell the same from person to person!) . I was apprehensive about the civet/skank element too , but it doesnt smell skanky on me. That could be different story on other skins though

It is  very strong and longlasting. I liked it . ! http://fimgs.net/smilies/cool.png  I wish some of my fave modern perfumes lasted so long

A tester vial i got off another fragrantican has lasted me for 4/5 wearings! Thats pretty impressive IMO , as im a heavy sprayer and with some of the lighter scents i can use an 1/8th of a FB in one go  lol

I might have to get it out and smell it now and remind myself of what its like......i deffo remember it not been as skanky as i feared though. I wrote a review at the time also.

Looking for UK Based swap-pals!

Re: Bal a Versailles owners, help please

Thank you all for responding. Indeed Obsession en Must have civet in it and in the reformulated version there is synthetic civet in it so the ''skanky'' part will not be there. I will have to get a sample of it. Its not that expensive for a new version. 50 ml for 32 euro's but i would have to blind buy and i do have others that i have on my wish list.

Thank you all, thats why i needed your advice 71
