Topic: Recommended essential oils?

Hello all,

I was hoping you could recommend to me some quality essential oils for fragrance making that aren't crazy expensive and are fairly easy to get a hold of.

I know certain oils are naturally more expensive...sandalwood, vanilla etc (sadly my favourite notes) but any recommendations would be great.

Many thanks! glad

Re: Recommended essential oils?

YES!

I also am interested in any recommendations...product or websites.  My local health food store is outrageously expensive. Like 20$ per oz

Re: Recommended essential oils?

I use these essential oils for beauty use, in the bath, in an oil burner, etc and they're affordable so may be worth a try. I've found Amazon is very good for finding low prices too:

lavender, geranium, bergamot, grapefruit, lime, lemongrass, ylang ylang, clary sage, patchouli and rosewood. I just had a look on Amazon and benzoin and petitgrain look pretty reasonable too even though I haven't used them. They are listed as notes in perfumes, though, so might be worth getting.

I find geranium and bergamot work well together (also with lavender) and lavender and lime are a great combination, as is lavender and ylang ylang/clary sage. Geranium is a brilliant oil to use as it's a bit rosy (also citrusy) so it's a good alternative to rose oil which is super expensive and ylang ylang, although not exactly like jasmine, has got a similar kind of exotic headiness to it but it's soooo much cheaper than jasmine.

Have a look on the net and see what other oils you can find. HTH!

Re: Recommended essential oils?

Try Liberty Natural or Eden Botanical. Both of these suppliers sell high quality essential oils in quantities from a fraction of an ounce to a kilogram or more. I don't think either one has a minimum purchase.

Health food stores and aromatherapy supply places have outrageous markups. Eden has descriptions of all of their oils, so you can have lots of fun browsing.

Re: Recommended essential oils?

I've been making natural skin care for 3+ years now, I've experimented with quite a few companies and I'd have to say www.mountainroseherbs.com is by far the best quality I've found. They have pretty decent pricing as well.

Also- recently I found www.essentialwholesale.com they have wonderful prices and they have good quality products as well.

Thank you all very much!

I had looked around but it's hard to know about the quality...thanks for the advise! glad

Re: Recommended essential oils?

This is a great site. Thank you for the ideas of where to find less expensive oils.  i like the smell of virginia cedar and grapefruit together, and the blend smells awesome with rose geranium.

I recently took an aromatherapy class that was very informative.  Our instructor was telling another 'lady of a certain age' that frankincense, patchouly, all the expensive stuff was  good for mature skin.

I said,"That's because, at our age, we can afford that expensive stuff!";-)

We all had a  hearty laugh at that one.

Re: Recommended essential oils?

I know a lot of soapers that use this site for essential oils and fragrance oils that are safe for skin.  I bought some Red Hots ( as in the candy ) and made some bubble bars.  They have lots of fruit and floral scents that are in perfume but not essential oils.  Essential oils kind of limits you, can't get an almond scent or coffee note, or even a carnation note in essential oils.

Nothing smells better then a freshly bathed Sheltie!

Re: Recommended essential oils?

soapgoods.com has a good selection of EO's at a decent price, but I haven't purchased from them yet to judge their quality. I do like Ananda Apothecary's prices and quality, though. Floracopeia has great, fantastic quality oils, but are pricey. Also seconding Mountain Rose Herbs. I've had good experiences with them in the past, too.

Re: Recommended essential oils?

The best essential oils I have found at the lowest price are from Now Essential Oils (I buy from LuckyVitamin.com but they are sold through other retailers as well). I've been using their essential oils for years, mostly topically for skincare, although sometimes also for aromatherapy. Unfortunately like you said, some oils are more expensive than others, but this brand tends to be cheaper than most and still is very good quality. I know that you are looking for an affordable option, but Aveda's essential oils are also great for fragrance making (but are unfortunately expensive). If you go into an Aveda store, a SA can help you choose which oils you want. http://t0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcTXet9nftoSjS0ShdpHC3kkn9Wp5VNksipqgQK4UEUCKcu8LCOrzA

they're French!

I've been buying there for a while now. Very good quality at the best price (at least in France).
