Topic: Noir intense extreme

I'm growing tired of the naming hype. What if somebody came out with a perfume called Homme Extreme Intense Noir Noir Intense de Extreme Noir? (Tom Ford - that master of hype - has a Noir de Noir, so we're almost there.)

The baffling thing is that many of the "extreme" or "intense" scents are hardly that. And what precisely does "noir" mean in perfumery?

I saw "iForce" in chrome on the tailgate of a pickup truck this morning - a highjacking of a technological reference - but at least that's a truck. It reminds me of the 1930's, when everything was "radio" or the 1950's, when things were "atomic." Enough with the advertising jargon/hype, already!

Sorry for sounding like Andy Rooney, but this one really twists my knickers.

Agree, last time I bought an "extreme" version of fragrance washttp://fimgs.net/images/perfume/m.1959.jpg  .

And guess what? Nothing extreme about it at all!

Couple days ago, Peake 1 left me in doubts when he mentioned how disappointed he was with http://fimgs.net/images/perfume/m.11570.jpg  which was on my next to-buy list!

It seems like "Noir" is the latest scents marketing trend after intense and extreme terms. In exception of DHI case though.

May Andy Rooney rest in peace.. He was the only reason I followed 60 mins

You are right: we are living in the era of the extreme/intense/secret/obscure/dark/unknown so anything with those names will attract masses...

And I am not talking about perfumes only...

The memories the fragrances bring up are priceless.

Re: Noir intense extreme

Typically it seems like these EXTREME/BLACK/NOIR/DARK/NIGHT versions just mean "we added incense"

And I love incense! But still.

Oh or a non-existent leather note. That's very NOIR.

Re: Noir intense extreme

I'm ready for the word "magik" in perfume names.

http://fimgs.net/images/perfume/m.4832.jpg Miller Harris L`Air de Rien Magik

http://fimgs.net/images/perfume/m.222.jpg Dior Dolce Vita Magik

You get the point...

Re: Noir intense extreme

I think the meaning of these words are very subjective to personal definition or perspective. Though I agree that in some cases the 'Extreme' or 'Intense' version of a fragrance isn't worth the added title.

Re: Noir intense extreme

Oh my gosh. I invoked the name Tom Ford which led to a consideration of his other marketing ideas - such as the full penile ad guy for M7. It just occurred to me:

"M7" may not describe a temporary name for an aroma molecule, like Halston Z-14.

It just might be a... measurement.

Thinking of the most common use of the word "noir" - film noir - what's very "noir" is cigarette smoke. People in those films smoked nonstop. America in the 1940's and 1950's must have smelled like cigarette smoke and ashtrays 24X7.

Re: Noir intense extreme

Quite often these words are used to suggest an edgy, slightly dangerous, and mysterious type of sexuality, although the scents with these names don't always smell like that!

Re: Noir intense extreme

Can we get some oud in that?  Like DARK OUD NOIR INTENSE EXTREME pour femme and DARK OUD NOIR EXTREME MAN EXTRAIT INTENSE pour homme?
