Topic: Vintage Avon-What's your Favorite and Why?

Avon has been in the perfume biz for a long time. Its current selection of perfumes is nothing like the vintage Avon perfumes of the 1950's, '60's, or '70's. Some people even swear that some of the Avon perfumes from the 1980's were different and far better than the same name ones created today by the company.

What are your favorites from days gone by?

Avon perfume formulations were stronger back then. The ingredients used weren't synthetic and the perfumes had more of an old-time Hollywood feel to them. They smelled like real perfume should. Perhaps it was the ingredients. the packaging was beautiful in the early days and my guess is, if you did a blind-fold test, it might be difficult to differentiate Avon from a higher-end fragrance of today.

The vintages are definitely worth looking for in the regular venues-thrift shops/ebay/etsy, etc. and can had for very low prices.

My favorites? Occur, Persian Wood, Topaze, Sonnet, Bird Of Paradise, Here's My Heart, Unforgettable, Candid, Trailing Arbutus, Moonwind, Imperial Garden, Regence and Charisma. The civet and the aldehydes get me every time! But Persian Wood stands alone as an Oriental. I have never smelled one like it that is as mesmerizing as it is. It is an unbelievable fragrance in my collection of perfumes.

Hi, This is one of my absolute favorite from the more vintage scents. I was able to get this from an Avon representative that had been hoarding it for years. It still smells fantastic, however it is almost gone now. http://fimgs.net/smilies/sad.png

And you're right, it smells much stronger than the current Avon fragrances, in fact this one is even a bit 'oily' in texture.

Re: Vintage Avon-What's your Favorite and Why?

I couldn't agree more. I am old enough to remember the Avons back in the day. They were beautiful compositions that would have rivaled any niche perfume. Seems after 1984, things went downhill and in my opinion, stayed there. Some of my faves are:

http://fimgs.net/images/perfume/m.5890.jpg Avon Candid Not the current one. The one from the 70's.

A lot aren't in the database. Here's a few more:

Avon Field Flowers

Avon Tasha

Avon Tempo

Avon Lilac. This was such a beautiful creme perfume and very lilac smelling. Not at all like an air freshener.

You can have your reformulations. I'll take vintage.

Re: Vintage Avon-What's your Favorite and Why?

I love any of them that I can find!!!!

But my PERSONAL favorite would have to be their Honeysuckle. I had a 1990's anniversary edition, a re release from the 70's that I discovered long after it's re release. ( How's that for a weird sentence! )

I'll be forever grateful that I was able to have this bottle, as the juice is ( still! ) utterly fantastic, full of orange blossoms, greens, and honeysuckle. Not at all artificial or unrealistic smelling, and reminds me of a perfect spring afternoon, sitting on my grandparent's porch swing by the honeysuckle vine! The only fragrance that comes close to this ( IMHO ) in aura would have to be Jo Malone Orange Blossom. But even then, I feel that my Avon Honeysuckle smells more expensive and is longer lasting!http://fimgs.net/images/perfume/m.2279.jpg

Re: Vintage Avon-What's your Favorite and Why?

You summed up what I consider to be the only good ones except - candid and +http://fimgs.net/images/perfume/m.15334.jpg Avon Rapture, a great animalic chypre!

The fragrances you mentioned were all released prior to the decision of the company to invest in collectible bottles at the expense of ingredient quality sometime in the 60s.

I ordered an original bottle of Topaze Oil Perfume for my friend's mother and it smelled just gorgeous. A true American classic, along with all the others you mentioned except for Candid). Charisma in particular is stunning.

Occur! is somehow an even more disgusting and indolic rendition of Bal a Versailles EDC. It's not even borderline fecal - it's quite overt and fascinating.

Persian Wood is interesting but a bit cheap. I have smelled quite a few vintage '30s-'50s fragrances like it, but the only remotely modern fragrance I could compare it to would be http://fimgs.net/images/perfume/m.1309.jpg Karl Lagerfeld Lagerfeld Classic

Avon Somewhere was also a nice, romantic floral. About a year and a half ago I was antiqueing with a co-worker and I came across a Avon fragrance sampler from a demo kit for the ambassadors when they would actually come to your house. Why oh why did I not snap it up? All of them were in working condition. DUH!!!!!!!!

You can have your reformulations. I'll take vintage.

Persian Wood, now that was truly a wonderful perfume. 27

I loved Brocade.  I have no idea what year (the last century) that was available but there was just something special for me with that fragrance.

Re: Vintage Avon-What's your Favorite and Why?

I truly believe the older the vintage Avon that you can find, if it is the original fragrance debut then it would be the original formulation and certainly the mix is fantastic. As with so many perfumes, when they reformulate their fragrances, something seems to go awry. The original Persian Wood (circa late '50's-early '60's) is absolutely outstanding and to die for. When I first had a whiff of it, I was so taken aback. That's what started me on this quest for the truly vintage Avon. I'm so happy to have collected a number at this point of the originals by sheer luck.

Re: Vintage Avon-What's your Favorite and Why?

I have three Avon perfumes over the years that I can remember fondly.

TRAILING ARBUTUS which I swear smelled like my Chanel #5 EDP 1978.

DEVOTEE which was their 100th anniversary special perfume never to be resurrected ever again

FANTASQUE  designed by Louis Feraud for Avon

Today I'm very fond of Lacroix ROUGE

Unfortunately my aging nose seems to find Avon creations now all smell alike and have no longevity with my chemistry-except for TIMELESS.

Re: Vintage Avon-What's your Favorite and Why?

My aunt was an Avon lady from the early 60's until the late 70's or early 80's. She was always giving us little bottles or my favorite, the cream sachets of the various fragrances.

My favorites through the years were Persian Woods, Bird of Paradise, Fantasque, Occur!, and one I will always associate with summer fun, Hawaiian White Ginger.

I wanted to post this here because I feel like you guys love Avon. I decanted a couple of vintage bottles today and I had enough leftover  to make a couple 5 ml Decants to giveaway. I have Birds of Paradise, Moonwind, Cotillion, Occur, and Rapture. The first two people to respond to this post can have them!

I never knew Avon (fragrances) before Fragrantica.

So far, http://fimgs.net/images/perfume/m.2310.jpg Avon Timeless  (won from JacksonSpines) is my favorite.

If I keep hanging around here, I'm sure, others will follow.

For reals?!  I have been looking for Moonwind and Occur!  I absolutely adore Persian Wood and there are times when Sweet Honesty really hits the spot.  But I am a newbie to the Avon world, so there are lots of things I haven't smelled yet.  If you think it is okay, I would love a chance to try them!

Re: Vintage Avon-What's your Favorite and Why?

I still have another set of Decants if anyone is interested. You will get the five vintage scents listed above.

By the way, if your interested Avon is having a good sale on the perfumed skin softners for 1.50, they layer well with their scents or can be worn on their own. The powders are also  less than $2 too.

I don't sell Avon.. Just sharing

Conifer, the Timeless lotion isn't as powerful as the perfume but it is really nice.
