Topic: Subtle, pleasant, inoffensive...

These are the types of scents I enjoy...  I've been limiting myself to coffee/vanilla themed scents, and I still want to keep going down that road, but I'd love to expand the search to all scents that are subtle, pleasant, and inoffensive.

Givenchy Play/Intense is in my wheel house so anything similar is appreciated along with anything else.

http://fimgs.net/images/perfume/m.1426.jpg Rochas Rochas Men

End of the story. Rochas Men is EXACTLY what you are looking for. It is extremely subtle, EXTREMELY pleasant to the point of intoxication, and because of how subtle it is an how pleasant it is, it is inoffensive. The fact that it also happens to be along the lines of your coffe/vanilla love, makes it too perfect

Re: Subtle, pleasant, inoffensive...

Thanks, jonny!   I received a sample of this awhile back and really liked it... as you suggested, it is right up my alley.   If you like that one, this one is better and less expensive... http://fimgs.net/images/perfume/m.9626.jpg Michael Jordan Legend

Re: Subtle, pleasant, inoffensive...

I've been quite impressed byhttp://fimgs.net/images/perfume/m.1583.jpg Avon Black Suede Touch

I was going to suggest Corduroy, but I see you already have it.

Another possible might behttp://fimgs.net/images/perfume/m.1937.jpg Alfred Dunhill Desire Blue

.....it doesn't list vanilla but definitely has that feel to me.

One of my favourite subtle ones (but not with the notes you are after) is

http://fimgs.net/images/perfume/m.4994.jpg Gres Cabaret Pour Homme

Looking through my collection the above are the only ones that would fit your criteria really.

The only other that might is............

http://fimgs.net/images/perfume/m.9456.jpg Yves Rocher Altika

.........but it hasn't arrived yet so I can't really recommend it. Meant to be very subtle and natural.

Apart from Altika, I know them all well, use them regularly and think it might be worth you giving them a test. They are all pretty cheap as well but smell and perform better than their cost would suggest.

Good luck

Re: Subtle, pleasant, inoffensive...

Oh, and there's http://fimgs.net/images/perfume/m.383.jpg  Hugo Boss Boss Bottled

Not sure it counts as subtle (depends what your idea of subtle is - it's less subtle than Corduroy but a lot more subtle than Le Male) but it is pleasant and inoffensive. Probably my favourite vanilla fragrance from the ones I have.

Re: Subtle, pleasant, inoffensive...

Thanks, pob... I've sampled Dunhill Desire Blue... I found it just plain nice...not a favorite, but one that is in the vein I'm trying to find.

I'll have to look into the suggestions you posted... I'm interested in Gres Cabaret. Thanks. BST sounds like it might be my kind of thing, too.

EDIT: While not jewish, I'm totally opposed to anything from Hugo Boss...the history of that company is beyond atrocious.

I agree.  Rochas Man seems to be a good pick.  I was just sniffing this today in my closet.  It's very subtle, and that mocha vibe you get makes it a nice skin scent to have on.

The fragrance doesn't make you.  Who you are makes YOU.  The fragrance is just an added bonus. Don't mistake it.

Subtle, pleasant, inoffensive...?

http://fimgs.net/images/perfume/m.39.jpg Givenchy Pi

Nevermind reviews that say this one is too sweet, it is not. It's sweet, you got that right, but not TOO sweet, sugar and vanilla in a very subtle and prestigous way, inoffensive, stays close to skin but still has good sillage. And is one of the most pleasant scent out there, be sure to try it!

Re: Subtle, pleasant, inoffensive...

I hope you're right, necro!  I have a bottle of this on the way!   I've been curious about a lot of the Givenchy line with my affinity for Play/Intense.  I had a bottle of Xeryus way back in the day.  I want to try Pi Neo and the Tropical one, also.

Thanks for the suggestion.

Looking forward to trying some of the suggestions everyone's been posting.

http://fimgs.net/images/perfume/m.52.jpg Guerlain L'Instant de Guerlain pour Homme you say you like coffee and vanilla, do you like chocolate? Here is the end of my review to give you an idea of what L'instant feels and smells like to me.

"L’Instant by Guerlain is so incredibly wonderful. I was immediately enveloped in a vale of coco and jasmine on the opening notes. Not feminine at all as one might expect but so confidently masculine in the blending in of anise, cedar and Indian sandalwood that take over the bulk of the middle. It is never overpowering but still commanding and insinuates a certain confidence that is very Parisian. The dry down is incredible. Lapsang Tea and Hibiscus seed and musk it is almost oriental in feeling. But all the way through and what got the most comments from those who noticed is that scrumptious rich dark chocolate that never quite leaves. Very long lasting, a great silage, an all around winner that drew praise from both women and men. Guerlain is the master of luxe and elegant fragrances of such depth and complexity that really makes them stand out as a top fragrance house of impeccable distinction."

Re: Subtle, pleasant, inoffensive...

Yes, I do!  Here's the irony in this suggestion... This is the fragrance I was to receive in a recent swap, but I got scammed.

Today, I layered some Trussardi Inside with Givenchy Play Intense and I got something very chocolatey.  I'm smelling it now, and it's really something.

Hope to be trying this one very soon.   Thank you.  A great suggestion.

I had to think about this one a bit, and when I was smelling this on me today, it suddenly came to me: http://fimgs.net/images/perfume/m.4248.jpg Creed Erolfa. Definite Creed signature, very masculine, once you're past the slightly tart opening it becomes a very clean and fresh scent marked by spices, wood, and florals. It's an excellent chypre with great longevity. Classic. Not offensive, subtle, very pleasant to be around.

Re: Subtle, pleasant, inoffensive...

Barolo, your wardrobe has a good selection of fragrances, congrats.

You may probably have smelt this before but I still believe this will suit your wants:

http://fimgs.net/images/perfume/m.17.jpg Hermes Terre d'Hermes

Re: Subtle, pleasant, inoffensive...

Thanks, Lobster...  I have not had a chance nor the desire to take a whiff of anything from Hermes.  It's somewhere on the to do list but not pressing.  The fact it's so popular pushes it down my list quite a bit.

I like reading some of the more obscure suggestions but they're all good and it's fun to go back and see what people have suggested even months later.  I'm still looking back at a post I put up months ago crossing things off the list slowly but surely.

Appreciate everyone who has taken the time to suggest something.  I have a long list now.  Who is going to pay for all of this?  Me. :(

Pleasent, comfortable "inoffensive":

Gourmand-like (your taste, if I did get your point) pleasent, subtle, inoffensive:

Woody-sweet pleasent and subtle, till certain point:

Spicy-gourmand like, subtle, pleasent, would not call it inoffensive:

Re: Subtle, pleasant, inoffensive...

I received a big slice of Givenchy Pi, today... After the initial synthetic blast, I found it to be right in line with what I like.

Thank you, necromancer for the push...I've been curious about this one but thanks to you, and others, I went ahead and grabbed a big bottle. I was all ready to say it was 2 of the 3 things I wanted. It wasn't pleasant, at first, and I was disappointed, but it's been awhile, now, and it smells really nice. Very good stuff.

Thank you, divine...I've been considering D&G 11 for awhile now...been close to getting it a couple of times.  Declaration was different.  Limey and spicy.  I thought it was pretty nice, but I wouldn't buy it.  Opium doesn't sound like it's for me and I don't know if I'm ready to soak the big bucks into blind buys, yet.

Re: Subtle, pleasant, inoffensive...

I finally got a chance to try...

http://fimgs.net/images/perfume/m.52.jpg Guerlain L'Instant de Guerlain pour Homme

It hits all the things I like in the presentation of a fragrance.  I just wasn't wowed by the scent itself.   For some reason, I kept thinking of Drakkar Noir as it settled on my skin.  The Extreme version would seemingly just resemble Drakkar even more.

I'll have to try the Bond recommendation...thanks Ronnie.  I love reading Scentrist and he's suggested that for me before.

This is the first time I've read Drakkar Noir similarities in L'Instant; fortunately for me, I don't get the same vibe as I dislike the former and love the latter.

As for New Haarlem, it is too cloying for my taste -- a harsh version of Rochas Man, in my opinion. Way too sweet, like a mixture of burnt brown and white sugar.
