Hi there. I am trying to get my husband to consider wearing SOMETHING, but he hates the idea. I told him he doesn't have to have a collection like me, and that he can just have one signature scent. He is really scared of perfumes for some reason and is VERY reluctant to try anything.

Here's the thing... I know NOTHING about men's frags at all. I need help! I need to find something he might like. I don't know what he might like, but I can tell you what he likes on me...

On ME, he LOVES Creed Spring Flower, which has a nice musky, amber drydown, and he says he hates the "old lady perfume" scents, and he hates anything too strong.

One thing I do know is he thinks perfume will make him seem gay. Ok, sorry if this sounds weird or offensive, and we are huge gay rights supporters and have many gay friends, but for some reason he seems to think there's nothing "manly" enough for him out there. Please help! I want my man smelling good!

Thank you glad

This made me laugh about being Gay, only because it is the same thing my husband said to me. But my husband is one of those guys that you can't even get him to wear color shirts. He thinks color is navy, beige, and hunter green. For him it is normal to wear grey t-shirts every day with navy or grey pants. I had to laugh, last year the guys on his golf league kidded him about taking up a collection to buy him some shirts, cuz all he ever wears are grey t-shirts. I gave up trying to get him fragrance and just buy him really strong deoderant such as OLD SPICE, he seems to slaughter that on and he at least smells good.

Nothing smells better then a freshly bathed Sheltie!

Most. Manly. Leather. Ever. But it's not for everyone. But hey, try a sample.

From what he likes to eat/drink this one came to mind:

Also maybe try something from the Comme des Garcons red series.

Re: Help me with my anti-frag husband! I know NOTHING about men's frags!

Have you tried the Old Spice body sprays? It might be a great way to figure out what scents he enjoys while allowing him to be comfortable wearing a scent that has a label he is familiar with.

Re: Help me with my anti-frag husband! I know NOTHING about men's frags!

Maybe you could procure a bunch of sample vials of men's fragrances. That way, he can test, experiment, and try without leaving the house. You could always swap out the ones he doesn't end up liking afterward.

One person's signature is someone else's scrubber.

Re: Help me with my anti-frag husband! I know NOTHING about men's frags!

Thanks, everyone! I will have to try to get samples of some of those. And just to reiterate, I am not forcing him to do anything!! He just hates shopping primarily (so I would need to find all the samples for him) and is worried about not seeming masculine enough. Don't ask me why but he associates perfumes with "pretty boys" so I just have to change his mind on that. He won't wear pink or pastels, etc etc. He's a man's man I guess you could say. I say wear pink! Wear perfume! That makes a man sexy, not effeminate!! He loves perfume on me, so we will see if I can find one he likes on him too.

And thanks for all the ideas!

Re: Help me with my anti-frag husband! I know NOTHING about men's frags!

I think you have a hopeless case, really. It's like hearing the girlfriend of the alcoholic -- "How do I get him to stop drinking?" You don't. If he isn't interested, he's not interested. If you try to help him change his mind, he will not appreciate it and you may just damage your marriage.

I did find your strident support of homosexuality to be pretty funny, though -- sounds like someone is worried about not being PC enough.

Oh, man! That's my fiance right there too! It took alot of convincing to get him to wear orange, and greens other than hunter, and even mid shade blues! But you can help him feel sexy and manly when he wears cologne, so he can start to break down any negative associations with it. My fiance has sensitive skin and nose, so I came upon a lovely well done aromatic fresh citrus. http://fimgs.net/images/perfume/m.9233.jpg Burt`s Bees Natural Cologne I truly can't smell patchouli in it, (more importantly is that he can't smell it, he still thinks there's none in there!) but otherwise i can pick out every note. It's blended wonderfully, and is inoffensive, yet very masculine. The basil, cypress and fir give it a very masculine 'woodsy' feel. and the citrus is bitter and aromatic not sweet at all. Good luck, it's a jungle out there!

Well, this one is VERY masculine to my nose! It might be too strong for him however, but masculine it sure is! I'm not saying that a woman can't wear it, but it is one of the most masculine scents that I ever put my nose on. It has a lot of notes that are traditionally considered "masculine" like citrus, sage, myrhh, thyme, basil, coriander, labdanum, oakmoss, and castoreum. Very "dark" and mysterious scent, you should at least give it a try. smile

His impressions about his masculinity are probably tied to how he interpreted "manly" scents on those he grew-up around. Anything that seems to club-ish or anything he remembers guys from his own age group wearing, might seem like "trying to hard" to him. Your friends who are gay are probably within your age group, so he's subconsciously associating what they wear with their sexuality, just like many people associate certain scents with royalty or office management.

Your husband would probabably would enjoy a classic, barbershop scent. Avoid any metropolitan/clubby designer scents and go for something more classic, even from a department store, old school brand.

Well, my husband hates wearing perfume as well, but for this once in a while time in his life that he feels he has to wear one, he keeps a bottle of http://fimgs.net/images/perfume/m.275.jpg Calvin Klein CK be in his closet. It's light, inoffensive and it also has the added benefit, that if he doesn't wear it too much, you can use it too 68

Well yes. I don't want people to get the wrong idea. I'm not here to offend anyone. I don't see how me being "PC" is funny, but okay...

Do you guys know of one that is kinda like leather, spice, wood, etc without any (or much) fruit at all??

Oh, also I just remembered that he doesn't really like patchouli.

I'll second the vote of the person who suggested http://fimgs.net/images/perfume/m.1143.jpg Montale Aoud Cuir d’Arabie and add http://fimgs.net/images/perfume/m.9224.jpg Montale Aoud Leather to that (the latter has a very nice dry-down, there's no floral element at all). Same with http://fimgs.net/images/perfume/m.14031.jpg Lubin Idole Eau de Parfum. Also, if you can find it, http://fimgs.net/images/perfume/m.691.jpg Gucci Gucci pour Homme (make sure it's this version, not the one with the gold cap and blue liquid), this is very smoky, spicy and refined and masculine. Gets a lot of love from me. In fact, that would be my starting point along with some samples of the Montale's from LuckyScent to get his opinion. All of them seem to suit the very masculine profile you've described for him.

By the way, most guys tend to lack the "shopping gene", so taking him to the mall to roam around and smell things all day won't work well with him (come to think of it, I don't much like it either). Find a sympathetic SA, tell them the particular types of fragrance he might like, and then get them to give you some vials-on-card of the ones that key in on those points.

Otherwise, if he likes smelling you, he clearly likes some fragrance but on his terms. Do a search here for the right combinations of the notes from these and other suggestions, see what you can get samples of (or order off the web), collect them, and make an event of having him try different ones in a setting where he can enjoy it.

Good luck!

I had to laugh about the comment about some men lacking the Shopping gene, You just discribed my husband. All though he does have the shopping gene for computers and golf clubs, drives me crazy i find that totally boring and I even golf.

I totally get her husband. Won't wear pink, doesn't want anything flowery, probably a little insecure about being interpreted as a (gasp) "metrosexual". First it's the fragrance. Next he'll be getting his eyebrows shaped and waxed and a mani-pedi. Before you know it? Paisley sets in! 51

He'll come around but on his own terms. The secret is that she needs to drop the subtle hint of "I really like this smell on you", and then he'll get it and realize it isn't just about him.

if it were me trying to get him put SOMETHING on that in NO way could be thought of as Gay or metro .. then maybe start out with a 100% manly after shave like ICE BLUE Aqua Valva.. smells good, smells manly and is very fresh!!

Sure, it's not fancy but it's a start....

 Good luck

Re: Help me with my anti-frag husband! I know NOTHING about men's frags!

Sweetiepea, I know very little about men's fragrances as well, but my husband wears these and smells very manly and awesome.http://fimgs.net/images/perfume/m.39.jpg Givenchy Pi This makes me weak in the knees. And http://fimgs.net/images/perfume/m.10048.jpg Bath and Body Works Oak is wonderful for everyday.
