Topic: Shipping entire perfume collection to new house, help!

I'm shipping my entire perfume collection from CA to the east coast. I pared it down to my very favorites, so it all would fit in one box.

But now when I pick the box up, it sounds like I'm shipping a bunch of bottles of fluid. I NEVER tell the post office when I'm shipping perfume because they won't do it, at least not at my local post office. I just don't know how to go about trying to ship this box. Should I tell them it's perfume this time? Should I tell them it's something else? What should I expect?

Any advice about trying to ship a lot of perfume at once would be appreciated.

You should wrap each bottle in bubblewrap and tape, and try not to load everything into one box - it may take several depending on the size of your collection. I shudder to think of moving mine! Good luck!

Also I would mark the boxes fragile - china and mail them. You may want to insure them as well.

Re: Shipping entire perfume collection to new house, help!

Thank you Belle de Sud! They all fit pretty well in one box. maybe I should unpack and repack into two, just to make sure that if one box gets knocked around, at least half of my collection will survive.

I was going to mark it as china, but it SOUNDS like there are liquids inside, when I shake it. How do I explain that? Do you think I can get away with saying a lot of it is unguents, like shampoo??

I agree with belle - bubble wrap each one and tape them. I would even go so far as to wrap them inside of undies and scarves - stuff like that to help with padding.

The U.S. Post Office have boxes "When it Fits, it Ships". I used them when I relocated from Florida to New York, and carefully shipped my perfumes ahead of time.

Use masking tape and seal the top of the bottle tightly. Use a bubble wrap and wrap the bottle with it, and seal this tightly with masking tape. Now you have the bottles sealed.

I got suitable size cartons and used my sweaters, towels and soft clothing to cushion the whole thing inside the carton, the tighter the better, never mind that the clothes get creases, you can iron that.

That way the bottles do not shake.

I never told the post office, no contents were declared, just an address label to my new location, I mean sender = me and recipient = me.

WHEN IT FITS - IT SHIPS. Bulk rate. You can get the cartons for free, and play with them, folding up different sizes, then pack them up, and line them up at the wall, and drive all them to the post office at once.

Ayyy this is what terrifies me about moving to Brazil! I have no idea how to get them there safely!

New SWAP list here...

Re: Shipping entire perfume collection to new house, help!

My bottles aren't shaking, they fit pretty snug, but many of them are half-full. So when you lift the box, you can hear the fluid contents shifting inside the bottles. SIGH. It's so distinctly fluid, if anyone moves it at all, they'll hear.

It's a great idea to use those ship it fits boxes though! I didn't even think of that.

I am glad you like the idea.  There are four different sizes, you can get them for free.

You may wish to decant your half full bottles into smaller bottles, so that they don't sound shaking, the post office may be keen on that, and examine ?? I don't know.  Or use these up, and ship only the full ones, and only the best (=favorites).

There is soooo much other "stuff" to ship - or to discard - that this becomes a monumental head ache.  But that is another story.  Packing Lists may help.  Other members who have moved and have gone through that ordeal, could chime in and provide useful advice ...

If/when I move I know I'll be driving my car to the new place with my pets even though my belongings will be shipped via moving company so I would plan on packing all of my fragrances in boxes that will no doubt fill my car.  I wouldn't consider shipping them via any shipping company.

Ditto this.  Ground shipping is legal, so you don't have the stress.

I would so split up your collection into more than one box! just imagine if it got lost or met with an accident.

good luck with your move!

I say!  It's Pimms o'clock.

Re: Shipping entire perfume collection to new house, help!

If you try to insure them and something does break you will not get your money for them because the post office will not insure liquids, and you could get in trouble.  I would get dilery conformation, also bubble wrap each one and declare them as perfume.  They will mark it fragile and it will take about a week to get to the east coast going ground service.

Silly as it sounds.. I remember once in a swap I got some half full bottles... and the person sending them to me put broken spagetti and rice to make noise, in between the bubble wraps and the bottles.... Now remember it was coming from Europe, and I am in Canada... where they are very yucky with these things. It worked!

Wow, just reading your post gave me instant anxiety!  I don't know what you can do, other than what the others have mentioned above.  I would definitely split up the collection and pack it into several boxes.  Make sure it is very well packed.  Good luck and please let us know if your treasures made it there safe...

Happyme is right - I have had good luck adding breakfast cereal to sloshy sounding packages more than once.

Re: Shipping entire perfume collection to new house, help!

I will likely be doing this soon as well and am terrified about moving my precious collection.  (By which I mean precious to me, not necessarily worth a huge amount of money.   smile)

Are you using a moving company?  Might be worth having the perfumes packed carefully and moved with your furniture in the van.  If not, ground shipping is probably the way to go.  Use way more bubble wrap and padding than you think you'll need.  You can cut apart one of those egg crate mattress toppers to line the box if you really want to protect it well.

I ship perfume to my mom all the time.  She is in California and I am in the Midwest.  They have always just told me it has to be ground shipped.

Re: Shipping entire perfume collection to new house, help!

Hi I buy wholesale internationally , and what they do with the most secure shipping method was place a medium box inside a large box, and in between the large box and medium box gap placed a lot of foam chips or padding of choice, inside were just bottles of perfumes packed really tightly with more foam chips, not a peep squeak of movement, and not even a dent. I think movement and allowance for compression (compressible foam chips) helps.
