Topic: Style for a Plus Size Girl

I invite both guys and girls to this topic  smile

According to an online converter my size is equivalent to

Size 12 US

Size 14 UK

Size 14 NZ

I do not have any photos to put up (kinda shy) hopefully these will help:

Descriptions: Long dark brown wavy hair, medium brown (slightly caramel complexion) Brown eyes, 5ft7 (170cm) 25, student.

Assets: Breasts(D), Legs, behind and apparently arms + neck(kinda long)..

Problem areas: mid section (the worst) lovehandles, still have abit of a waist.

Current preferences: I like to go from preppy to loose and flowy. I like vintage pieces. I can wear medium heels no higher than 3-4inches. Willing to switch these up of course, any colour compatible with my complexion is fine. I'm not too much of a fashion follower, i believe style is more important than the latest fashions, but will still pic out bits and pieces from it of course. Love knits, blazers, skinny/straight legged jeans, boots (flat black) (tan heeled)

Will not wear: hoodies, things with writing on the bum, diamante encrusted dresses. my boyfriends says no no to these things: jandals, wedges and uggs.

I hope I have not limited too much  dumbom I think this will help with girls in the same situation as me. Posting up pics of the clothing is fine(i actually don't know how to do this myself.

Any suggestions please?

Re: Style for a Plus Size Girl

Interesting; where I live, a size 12 US isn't considered plus size. I'm a size 10 US so I guess I'm getting up there? Anyway, I'm a little bit taller, but I think you might be able to wear this sort of stuff:

http://www.bbdakota.com/yair-dress/d/1291_cl_1236

I find wide belts help slim down a flowy dress so a woman doesn't look so pregnant in one; plus the belt helps accentuate the bust and hips.

http://www.zappos.com/images/z/1/8/7/9/6/3/1879636-p-MULTIVIEW.jpg

(a wide brown or black belt would look great here I think)

http://theshoportunist.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/wide-belt-3.jpg

I myself have wide shoulders, so I tend to avoid strapless dresses. But if I find one I really like, I wear a bolero. If you have wide shoulders too, asymmetrical dresses work nicely.

I don't have much bookmarked on jeans or tops, but I hope this helps a little in the dress department.

It's OK to be afraid, but it will never be the same.

Re: Style for a Plus Size Girl

Basic advice for any woman in or nearing plus sizes: accentuate any curves, wear things that keep your lines, e.g.: an A-line from the shoulders and NOT the bust will have a more appreciable effect, so on order not to call attention to any chubby area, stay away from waterfall lines and maxi-dresses that only look good on skinny models.  Work with your shape by wearing flowing trousers, for example, with a belt, or if you wear a low neckline exposing cleavage, balance it with a long mid-length skirt or jeans instead of also exposing legs.

Re: Style for a Plus Size Girl

Just wanted to let you know that a 12 is not plus sized!  you may be feeling self conscious for absolutely no reason! (Not that anyone over this should feel self conscious, either ). but really, even if you have a couple problem areas, that is a quite "normal" size!

I know i was quite in shock! I went into a clothing store and they classed me as plus sized, this was Glassons and the sales assistant kept mentioning this word while trying to pick out clothing for me "for plus sized girls we recommend this". TBH i don't really know how it is classified i kind of assumed I was like maybe in the beginning range somewhere?

I find that about this size (14NZ) range i am much more comfortable, i feel womanly(i used to weigh 45kg's). I like my size, I think i am in a period of transition where i'd like to dress just a bit nicer than what i currently do and get some nice tips on how to hide those "areas" Get a few tips from the fragrantiguys on what a woman should wear etc etc

So far i really like the tips, i'd like to look abit more feminine and i like dresses too!  smile I especially like the v neck dress its more forgiving less booby booby maybe just a teensy bit, very nice!

Re: Style for a Plus Size Girl

EMonika you're definitely not plus sized. You can dress as you like with that size.

I'm size 12 and enjoy wearing dresses, shorts and whatever clothes that I like.

Jessica Simpson brand has many pretty dresses in different sizes, I'm sure you'll find some you like.

Wow I am so loving some of these right now 26

Re: Style for a Plus Size Girl

Definitely A-line's for sure! And structure. Nothing floppy and shapeless! And don't wear anything too tight. I would say fit is key. If your clothes have shape and fit properly, you will look great.

Don't wear lycra, take some fine materials like viscose or silk, not big flowers or large prints plus a little makeup and a good haircut is mandatory. Do not wear too much jewelry, relax and enjoy, if you feel comfortable with your body everybody will notice it, even the skinny girls. I've had periods of thinness and weight gain, most important is the attitude. You don't need to be thin to feel good, personality is important and optimism.

I have a friend that is "plus sized" & she knows how to work it like it's nobodies business!

She also has a blog where she regularly writes and post tons of pictures on her fashion! She hunts down the latest deals & does haul entries! http://curvesahead14.blogspot.com/

& has her own shoe company called Fancy Steps. Her shoes are all very affordable, each pair custom. (She mostly specializes in pumps & flats)

Re: Style for a Plus Size Girl

I can't believe that size 12 is PLUS SIZE.  I take a size 30 Australian, which equates to plus size 4X or even 5X in the US.  There is just about nothing available in Australia for us BBWs.

My sister used to live in Hawaii and would send me the Lane Bryant & Roaman's catalogues and then buy me what I needed from them.  I wish they would post overseas.  I have to rely on ebay to get my big clothes. Luckily I don't have to dress up much so can get by on knit pants, t-shirts, a couple of skirts & shirts, and three "dressy" dresses.  Bras are another problem - although I'm big around the chest I only wear a size B cup.  Can only source my size from the US.

I haven't been a size 12 since I was about 10-12 years old!!!

EMonika you are NOT a plus size. You probably look gorgeous in everything you wear! tummenupp

Re: Style for a Plus Size Girl

I was just browsing April Cornell's website before I saw this thread, and I was noticing they had very pretty normal-sized models...they were not rail thin. I think they make beautiful clothes that really celebrate women's bodies of all sizes.

Re: Style for a Plus Size Girl

Hi EMonika, dont freak out, you are not alone. i am the same size with you and face the same problem, sie 14 UK is plus size  hmm. there's a lot you can wear, i agree with all suggestions the forumers gave  rock. i am more restricted to fashion,i am a muslim and being fashionable is not appropriate to my workplace. just be confident with yourself, take good care of yourself, eat healthily, live your life happily, and sniff perfumes everyday  storstark

I'm sure your beautiful too!

Re: Style for a Plus Size Girl

No you definitely are not a plus size.  Can you find any online clothing stores for ideas and style tips.  We have several here in the UK that sizes start at 14/US 12.  I love peluzin78's choices hjarta

Or ask a friend or relative who's style you admire, to be your guru on a shopping spree, they will be flattered you want their opinion.  Grab some lunch and have a fab girlie day.

Where would I find the white print dress with the peterpan collar that the blonde is wearing? I love it!
