Topic: Question. Calvin Klein's Obsession.

Ok so I recently bought http://fimgs.net/images/perfume/m.248.jpg  Calvin Klein Obsession

It was a mini with the gold ring at the bottom of the cap

it said Eau de Cologne

so I know that's the original version

I don't like the new version without the ring on the cap- it's too sharp and the original is so nice and soft.

But to really go to my question I recently saw a fb of obsession in a store

that also has the gold ring at the bottom of the cap but says Eau de Parfum.

It looked just like this

http://www.operfumeria.com/products/images/en/obsession-by-calvin-klein-eau-de-parfum-spray-unboxed-34-oz-436337.jpg

is this also reformulation or is it original?

Re: Question. Calvin Klein's Obsession.

I just took a look at my old formula Obsession bottles. They all say "eau de parfum". I have never come across an Obsession "eau de cologne" in the 15+ years this fragrance has been a part of my wardrobe. But maybe it was a US release only.

Can you upload a picture of your mini?

When I'm good, I'm really good. When I'm bad, I'm better.

Re: Question. Calvin Klein's Obsession.

Oops it actually says "Cologne Spray" not "eau de cologne"

here's the picture

This is the one I have.

Re: Question. Calvin Klein's Obsession.

It does!

I think I'll go ahead & purchase.

I think the new Coty version is distinguished by the lack of the gold ring. I agree they ruined it- it's not pleasant at all.

Re: Question. Calvin Klein's Obsession.

Wow, very cool. I did some research in the meantime. I think it's the little spray sister of the old splash bottle:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/VINTAGE-OBSESSI … 1c28251e9c

If you look at the far right picture, it says "cologne" on the bottom. The splash bottles were only sold for a limited time.

Anyway, long story short. The eau de perfume version is old formula as well, I can assure you that  smile

Thanks so much Holly & JB :]

Re: Question. Calvin Klein's Obsession.

Oh, yes, do go ahead and get it.  That's the good stuff!   29

I was a young teenager when Obsession came out, and I had the EDP in the kidney-shaped splash bottle & then in the bottle you pictured.  I've bought several bottles over the years.  However, several months back, I bought a mini w/ the transparent brown cap (didn't notice the difference), and I honestly was certain that the bottle was "off" & returned it.  At the time, I hadn't heard that it had been reformulated, but I soon found out here on Fragrantica,  much to my distress!

So the transparent brown caps are to be avoided, imo, but I don't know how to tell the difference from just the boxes.  I need to pick up an original bottle, too!

Hi!

The Coty-boxes nowadays are smooth whiteish pearlized finish with dark brown inside, the text on the outside is also darkbrown.

The older boxes were white maybe one could say vanillawhite(?), with surface ridges, the inside was darkbluish as well as the text.                     (I have never owned the cologne so I don´t know about the box for that.)

There are some good pictures on google but I don´t know if I can link them since they are from perfume vendor websites.

When Obsession first came out back in '85, it came in a kidney shape bottle in the cologne and perfume concentration. Soon after, both concentrations came in spray, and the sprayer was fixed into the cap. In the late '90's, maybe early 2000's, Unilever bought the rights to Klein's perfume house, and kept the gold ringed design and original formula. Now owned by Coty, Obsession is not itself anymore.

http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p556/JoshuaCade1985/VintageObsessionKleincollection001.jpg  Here is my personal collection of Obsession. The splash bottle was my grandmothers. It's most precious to me, as she gave it to me not too long before she passed away. She bought this bottle in 1985, and used it throughout the rest of the late '80's. She never finished it, but I remember her smelling so good with it on. Brings back wonderful memories. The other two are mine. The spray cologne is from the '80's, the eau perfume is from the '90's.

I hope this helps some.

Yes, they´re JB's! But the emoticon was intended for both your and JB's products (and I have not managed to get two quotes in one response).

I'll go and check the website  tummenupp ...

Re: Question. Calvin Klein's Obsession.

I rather like vintage Obsession in the EDC formula. It's stronger and more long-lasting than the current EDP and smells quite a bit nicer. These days Obsession leans closer to Tabu than to Must de Cartier.

Re: Question. Calvin Klein's Obsession.

Not even. Tabu is nicer than the current formulation of Obsession. The new formulation is very much a scrubber.

Such a shame, old Obsession is a thing of beauty.

I agree, though you're not so gentle with your words. glad

Honestly, vintage Obsession is a little too much for me. It's very loudly proclaiming something that's not particularly interesting. I greatly prefer (and wear) Opium.

Re: Question. Calvin Klein's Obsession.

That's interesting. I've never tried Opium but I've read it's very strong. Didn't it get banned from restaurants in the 80's along with Giorgio? Vintage Opium is on my list of things to buy. I really look forward to trying it.

Re: Question. Calvin Klein's Obsession.

One thing I'm still confused about, is there a difference between the version without the gold ring with an opaque top and the one without the gold ring with a transparent top? Is one different/better than the other?

Dearest chanelnumerocinq,

Buy Anne Pliska EdP  (not affiliated) and you will feel better. (this is coming from an Obsession enthusiast).

i have seen this too i find the opaque top is much nicer and more of the old formula i ve been using it for almost 20 years and i really wish they stuck to the old gold was so much more powdery softer nicer and warmer ..just blissfull

I've always thought there was nothing sexier than a man who could pull off wearing Opium.  A friend wore it occasionally and it was glorious on him.
