Gardenias and Jasmine! I do not think anything else could compare! I used to take gardenias with me to school and the whole class could smell 1 single flower!

New SWAP list here...

Re: Most smelling flowers in your garden/home?

Indeed, gardenia and jasmine are the most wonderful smelling plants!

I love gardenia most of all, but I find it also to be one of the most difficult plants to grow in the house - I didn't have much success.

I have at home Hoya (Hoya carnosa)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hoya

This is a fairly undemanding plant that blooms almost all year round, flowers have a very strong sweet smell, but mostly at night. Though, some people may find the smell too strong. And the plant itself is beautiful as well.

Try to get Sambac jasmine. Its astounding. Gardenias are a must have!  Do magnolia trees grow where you live? We have the grandiflora type here in Florida... one blossom will perfume a very large room, or several smaller ones! Lilies and roses, but you must research which ones have the strongest fragrance. Especially the roses! Some of the old ones are magnificent for cut bouquets. (David Austin Roses, find the catalog on line)   Plumeria are also nice, once again, check the variety for intensity of fragrance. Good luck!

Thanx ladies.. Jasmines are a bit common where i live. Gardineas are fine but i hear its not esy to grow it.. but ill try.

I have few roses. they do not smell well.. just close to the flower only. Im looking for something that projects well..

if you're looking for garden plants, maybe you'd like some Petunias? - they are really with a huge projection! Though, petunias are quite common, there is a big variety of colors, forms and they are easy to grow on the balcony and small terassa.

Fragrant flowers in the home- Yes!   tummenupp

Gardenias

Lilac

Korean spice bush viburnum

Hyacinth

Lily of the valley (muguet)

Oriental lilies (Casablanca, Stargazer, especially)

Tuberose

All of these are visually beautiful, in addition to having intoxicating aromas!

Lovely topic!

Re: Most smelling flowers in your garden/home?

Most modern roses have a weak to no smell at all. Horrid things!  There are varieties out there that are strong! A vase of them will have no problem filling a room with fragrance. Its just getting the correct ones for your growing area. So I'll still recommend them.... few things are better than drifting off to sleep in a room filled with the lush, rich fragrance of old fashioned roses.

I have a prolific potted jasmine on my kitchen window. Outside by my doorway, I have a very hardy white rose whose flowers are not so pretty but its fragrance is hypnotic.

The Lord is my strength and my song.

Re: Most smelling flowers in your garden/home?

Oriental lillies are amazing, but the bloom period is short.

Some Old Rose varieties smell lovely and the scent travels. Also some Rugosa roses smell great, but they don't make good cutting flowers.

Be nice!

Re: Most smelling flowers in your garden/home?

Gardenias, Plumeria, four o clocks, antique roses, magnolias, orange flowers, loquat tree flowers, datura (angel trumpets), lillies,

I planted a "night garden" once.  We used to sit outside on hot summer nights and I wanted to be able to see the flowers.  I planted all white flowers and they reflected the moonlight beautifully.

Variety is the spice of life.

For indoors, why not try forcing some hyacinths in the fridge?  I've got a few flowering now, in glass hurricane jars on pebbles and they smell lovely.

Re: Most smelling flowers in your garden/home?

I use to have Star gazer lillies, but they no longer come up, so they either died or squirrels ate the bulbs. They are very fragrant, somewhat a spicy scent.

Nothing smells better then a freshly bathed Sheltie!

Re: Most smelling flowers in your garden/home?

I hate cutting my flowers! I can't bring myself to do it.

Outdoors, Hedychium coronarium is my super fragrant attention getter. Beautiful and they smell devine!

You climate is tropical, isn't it?Jasmines are a good guess for you. My hedyciums should do there too. They love hot, humid weather and are glorious!

Re: Most smelling flowers in your garden/home?

Gardenias require a low soil pH and lots of water. It has been a while since I have grown them, but I seem to remember a whitefly problem. I could be wrong on that.

The most aromatic flowers I like are jasmine, alyssum, certain varieties of rose, and honeysuckle.

It is really nice to have a flower garden in your place. You will surely going to appreciate the beauty of the nature when you see the blooming flowers of your plants.
