Topic: Riskiest / safest blind buys?

J not looking for suggestions , Just what you think. )

Which perfumes would you consider the riskiets blind buys? Why?

Which perfumes would you consider the safest blind buys? Why?

I am a habitual offender in the blind buy department. I am extremely impulsive. LOL! Mixed results.. of course!

Risky: Any Etat Libre D'Orange

http://fimgs.net/images/perfume/m.4522.jpg Etat Libre d`Orange Rien

Strongly advise try before you buy. Notes sound OK but they still don't smell like you think they might.

Re: Riskiest / safest blind buys?

Risky :

Terre de Hermes Parfum. If you like the EDT you may not like the PARFUM.

Safe :

Green Irish Tweed by Creed.

Re: Riskiest / safest blind buys?

I have been tempted to blind buy an Etat Libre d'Orange before, they are so interesting. Muglers are tricky on my skin. I am leery  of those, they go soooo bad on me.

ThatMakesScents, I am not at all familiar with your choices! I wonder why and edt  and an edp are two different scents? I would expect them to be different concentrations of the same perfume!

Re: Riskiest / safest blind buys?

Some fragrance houses need to be tested first...Chanel, Mugler, Dior...they all are super risky blind buys. Every fragrance is unique and makes a statement.

Body sprays...you can't go wrong here. Dirt cheap and helps you learn the categories you prefer.

Re: Riskiest / safest blind buys?

As far as the fragrances themselves go Muglers might be risky. But in view of their popularity the economic risk from blind buying is practically nonexistent. You can easily sell or swap any of them.

Other than that, people might consider some of the classics risky. For me maybe Guerlain, none of their scents have worked for me yet.

Re: Riskiest / safest blind buys?

Depends on your taste. What's a risky blind buy for you is different to what would be a risky blind buy for me.

Re: Riskiest / safest blind buys?

For me, a blind buy is risky if its above a certain price point.  I have made one or two costly blind buy mistakes and have learnt my lesson.  My new policy is to blind buy only below a specific price point.  That way, if you don't like it, at least you don't feel like you wasted a lot of money.

if you blind buy this, you must be already brace yourself!  lol

safest:

the more mainstream like Bvlgari or Aigner. most (but not all) people would like it (even if they not love, at least dont go as far as dislike)

Very true. If you've done a lot of sampling and you're blind buy hit rate is good (for your own tastes) you can still be caught out... and Etat Libre is like that. I can say the notes for Rien are Incense, rose, leather, cistus, oakmoss, patchouli, amber, cumin, black pepper, aldehyde from the database.. but it doesn't smell like any of that, it smells like an onslaught of civet that won't stop or wash off.

I'm trying to think of a mainstream fragrance that's really taken me aback like that. I can't think of one. i'll pretty much try anything in the name of fairness and experimentation, it's part of the learning curve. Etat are experimental by design, they aren't meant to be an easy fruity floral. Personally I was glad I bought the sample set. It was interesting, but I haven't purchased a FB.

Re: Riskiest / safest blind buys?

Risky: Any Thierry Mugler creation, Serge Lutens, and Tom Ford. These designers/houses cater to the tastes of a specific type/group of people therefore they elicit polar reactions from everyone. It's best to try before buying to be on the safe side with these because they are also very expensive.

Safe: Celebrity perfumes.

I tend to be more intrigued by "controversial" risky perfumes but I play it safe by testing them a couple of times before determining if they suit my personality and body chemistry well.

Re: Riskiest / safest blind buys?

As far as I'm concerned, no perfume is a safe blind buy.  Its better to smell it and see if you'll actually like it.  Too many times you've seen people buy something, and be pissed that they spend their money on something they hate.

Always take time to smell a perfume if its possible.  The more a perfume costs, the riskier the blind buy.  Hell I have a 5 dollar cheapie in my wardrobe but I would not have bought it without smelling it first. (its just the way I am)

Risky: http://fimgs.net/images/perfume/m.704.jpg Thierry Mugler Angel . It smells different on everybody.

Safe: Anything celebrity because they generally aren't that expensive.

Re: Riskiest / safest blind buys?

Any blind buy is a gamble. If I don't like it, then I have no one to blame but myself.

I do check the reviews here most times but I don't always. I have never bought anything pricier unsmelled. Although I have been tempted.

Re: Riskiest / safest blind buys?

To me anything with more negative reviews than positive reviews is a risky blind buy glad.

I blind buy a lot and the one thing that always seems to be the safest for me is Citrus / Fruity fragrances.

Re: Riskiest / safest blind buys?

Riskiest: anything over $20.00 USD, regardless of the fragrance house.

Safest: under $20 with shipping included with reviews that praise or disparage notes you know you enjoy. Also, any blind buy from TJMAXX or Marshalls because they offer a full refund on returns, provided you've only sprayed a couple of times.

My favorite blind buys this last year or so have been from the Jeanne Arthes line. Each cost me between $10 and $12 USD and I enjoy each of the 4 I have, with a 5th on its way to me this week:

http://fimgs.net/images/perfume/m.5664.jpg  Jeanne Arthes Sur Un Nuage Absolutely gorgeous representation of the night-blooming annual flower Angel's Trumpet. Hard to find but worth the search. (I mention this one only because I recently found my back-up bottle- if I hadn't I wouldn't be sharing this one!)

http://fimgs.net/images/perfume/m.10833.jpg  Jeanne Arthes Love Generation Rock Soft & powdery. Many liken it to Ange ou Demon.

http://fimgs.net/images/perfume/m.10215.jpg  Jeanne Arthes Amore Mio Reminds me of Miss Dior Cherie with an added note of fresh, green apple.

http://fimgs.net/images/perfume/m.14770.jpg  Jeanne Arthes Love Never Dies Black Jewel A chypre wonder with an undercurrent of "chewy" patchouli.

http://fimgs.net/images/perfume/m.9287.jpg  Jeanne Arthes Arthes Love Never Dies Gold I ordered this from the same ebay vendor who sold me Black Jewel and I'm absolutely certain I'll love it -- it's one of just a very few fragrances that include a note of truffle (listed as "tuber" in the list of notes here).

In my case, the riskiest blind buys are vintages.

I gave up on buying vintages....so many are either turned or just too weird smelling to my nose (probably because they turned. lol)

No matter what others say that newer perfumes are not the same quality, I think there are still so many beautiful fragrances that are being created. No reason get attached to some ancient stuff and pay double or triple for it.
