Topic: Natural Exfoliants

I don't know if it's bad to exfoliate everyday especially in the colder months, but my skin tends to get super dry and flaky this time of year. Nothing pleases me more than to scrub away all that itchy skin, lol. I actually use the ground coffee you buy at the market, and it works incredibly well. Still, I'm open to other options because while the coffee works good it leaves behind such a mess and I have to clean up big time everyday. I like the smell of coffee also, but I would love to try other natural exfoliates that are fragrant as well. Any less messy and more fragrant suggestions?

Essential oils (the one you use to fragrant your home/burning purpose sometimes can't be used on skin)

Be creative, add and mix any of them. For dry+itchy skin, try oatmeal and milk+honey. You can choose to put few drops of sandalwood, rose, lavender, chamomile or ylang-ylang oil as well.

Re: Natural Exfoliants

I've had good luck using baking soda.  I mix a little bit into my normal foaming face wash while showering.  Gentle but effective.

Re: Natural Exfoliants

I'm going to try the oatmeal with a few drops of licorice extract, and  baking soda as well.  Whichever is easier on cleanup and makes the best scent.  Thank you ladies! 15

Re: Natural Exfoliants

Baking soda is great for oily skin. Honey and ground oatmeal mixed with brown sugar mixed with any kind of oil (olive, jojoba, almond, apricot) works great!

Re: Natural Exfoliants

I have oily skin on my face...  Lime sliced or coffee powder are good natural exfoliators

Natural body exfoliators is made by Rice, Milk or Lemon, Olive, Rose or Jasmin or Ylang ylang... Asia pacific traditional ingredients glad

I remember The Body Shop used to do a face scrub made of ground up aduki beans, which was nice to use and gentle.

Re: Natural Exfoliants

I would not use any home made things ... what a mess !!  There are shower gels in the drugstores with exfoliating power that do the job, plus a loofah or a scrubbing brush.  If you do this everyday, you will harm !!! your skin.

Also, do not use fragrant oils for home use on your skin !!!  Good grief.

Re: Natural Exfoliants

Thanks for the tips everyone.  I've since added almonds to my daily diet and what do you know?  Itchy winter skin cured.  What a relief!

BTW, Licorice extract is perfectly fine to use on your skin and is used in some beauty products to lighten or even out skin tone.

Re: Natural Exfoliants

There's a lot of good information for DIY skincare available. It's a great way to get a maximum of the right active ingredients at a minimum of the price. Most ready made (affordable) skincare products contain large percentages of fillers and such tiny quantities of actives that they're almost worthless. It involves a surprisingly small amount of work.

Brown sugar is pretty much a classic for exfoliation. For that you don't even need to mix anything special. You can just add a teaspoonful to your shower gel in your hand and spread it. superglad

Re: Natural Exfoliants

My daughter taught me how to make a great sugar scrub at home - use raw sugar, cover the top with olive oil and a few drops of essential oil and stir together well. Store in a plastic food container in the shower for super soft skin!

Re: Natural Exfoliants

Papaya (extract) is a super exfoliant, as well as non-colored jojoba "beads" in a base cleansing lotion, etc. Together, they are a miracle, especially for those of us living in arid climates. I have to use some kind of sloughing agent with every shower, or creams, dry oils, & lotions can't penetrate. My skin looks craggy, parched, and dusty otherwise.  But its important to remember to "feed" your skin after sloughing, and try to avoid anything that has sharp edges (sugar, salt, ground kernals), as these can cause micro-tearing of the finer tissues.

Re: Natural Exfoliants

Honey and oatmeal work best for me. I boil oatmeal ground up in a coffee grinder, and put it on my face. After washing it off with a moist towel, I follow up with honey for a few minutes, then moisturize. I swear, there is no better cleanser and exfoliator on the market. If I had the time, I'd do it twice a day. Treats my acne too! Make sure to get raw, ungraded honey though. Heating honey kills many of its most valuable assets.

Also, I'd recommend vitamin E oil. Or just break a capsule of vitamin E, and apply it right on your dry skin.

Re: Natural Exfoliants

Coffee grounds, apricot seeds/kernels, oatmeal, salt (coarse and fine), sugar, poppy seeds, & walnut seeds.

Re: Natural Exfoliants

I use sometimes just cornflour or brown sugar, then apply almond oil... it's very pleasant sensation to the skin and it smells divine  smile

Re: Natural Exfoliants

oatmeal + honey

oatmeal + olive oil

rice powder + milk

Re: Natural Exfoliants

I have tried A LOT of different things, but once I found out about microfiber cloths (yes, the kind you clean the house with) that has been all I will use. Not messy at all and completely natural. I first read about using them on your face on MakeupAlley. Here's the link to the (glowing) reviews.

I'm also a big fan of AHAs for melting away the rough stuff. If you slather on an AHA cream, wait a few minutes, then gently scrub off with a microfiber cloth, your skin will be like silk!

Re: Natural Exfoliants

To exfoliate my body, I just use white sugar mixed with a tiny bit of olive oil. It's very scrubby and moisturzing. I love it! If you want something scented, you could use a less scented oil and just add some essential oil to it. Very easy and VERY effective!

Also, I used to use a lactic acid lotion called Lac-Hydrin 5 on my face. It didn't burn or anything, just a slight tingle. I remember it did help. I don't know why I stopped using it! You should check it out!

Oh, and also check out LUSH. They have facial cleansers that are exfoliating and completely natural:

How long do you boil the oatmeal?

And how do you use the vitamin E oil?

Details, please! glad Thanks!

Re: Natural Exfoliants

I have to disagree with Udaria - natural ingredients are far superior to what is sold in the stores. Chemicals dry the heck out of my skin and make me break out.

I give another vote for oatmeal, sugar (AHAs), honey, yogurt (lactic acid), and baking soda (although baking soda alters the skin's pH and is very harsh - use with caution and only 1 or 2x week max). Mix your exfoliant of choice with a carrier oil (ex. olive, almond, jojoba) if your skin is dry and needs extra moisturization. Be careful with some of the scratchier exfoliants like rice powder - they can create tiny tears in the skin and aggravate your condition.

And yes, essential oils can be used on the skin if properly diluted with a carrier oil and not applied full-strength. Artificial fragrance oils should never be applied to the skin.

Another vote for microfiber cloths (again, be gentle) and have you ever tried a Clarisonic-type brush? Those are gentle and are great for exfoliation too.

Re: Natural Exfoliants

This may be a bit too complex to make for the entire body, but it's great when applied to face. I mix an egg yolk with a little bit of baking soda and some oil (whichever one you like) and apply it to face for 10 min.

Wash off with warm water, apply some more oil to your skin...mm..This stuff exfoliates and tightens your pores, I have problem skin and really love it.

Re: Natural Exfoliants

I make homemade almond milk regularly. When I have leftover, wet almond meal, I use it as an exfoliator. It works incredibly well, and the oil content of the nuts leave my skin feeling very soft.
