Bobbi Brown is an American cosmetic brand, founded by the eponymous professional make-up artist.
Bobbi was fascinated by cosmetics as she, as a young girl, watched her mother put it on. She got her first professional training in make-up in a small cosmetic store in her town. After graduating in theatrical make-up at Boston's Emerson College, Bobbi moved to New York and tried to make it big as a freelancer make-up artist in Manhattan. After a number of gigs at fashion magazines, models and photographers, her big success came first with a seven-page spread of beauty shots with supermodel Tatiana Patitz shot by Wayne Maser and the make-up for a cover of American Vogue. The cover featured Naomi Campbell and was shot by the celebrity photographer Patrick Demarchelier.
After ten years of freelancer business, she decided to create her own, simple and natural-look make up and she consulted a chemist about it: "I had the idea to create a lipstick that didn't smell, wasn't dry or greasy, and looked like lips, only better—and I told the chemist about it". In 1991, Bobbi Brown debuted her make up with ten brownish and natural shades of lipstick at the Bergdorf Goodman under the name of Bobbi Brown Essentials and immediately sold a hundred lipsticks within the first day. Her cosmetic range expanded beyond lipstick. For example, her foundations were revolutionary because they were yellow-based, not pink-based as it was usual. The Estée Lauder company bought the brand in 1995, just four years after the company’s founding and kept Bobbi Brown’s creative control of the brand.
Bobbi described what she finds beautiful at her official site: “A strong brow, bedroom eyes, a bump on the nose – these are the features that inspire me. Beauty isn’t about looking perfect. It’s about celebrating your individuality.” She believes that every woman should praise her unique and natural beauty and feels that her make-up products can help them with that. “Makeup is a way for a woman to look and feel like herself, only prettier and more confident”.
Bobbi wrote several books about cosmetics, beuty and lifestyle and is a New York Times bestselling author. Those books are: Bobbi Brown Beauty, Bobbi Brown Teenage Beauty, Bobbi Brown Beauty Evolution, Bobbi Brown Living Beauty and Bobbi Brown Makeup Manual. Since 2001, Bobbi Brown Cosmetics helps “Dress for Success” charity organization to help disadvantaged women get their independence and confidence back.
