Domenico Caraceni (1880 – 1940) is considered “the founder of Italian tailoring”. He founded his own tailor shop in Rome, Italy in 1913.
Domenico came from the Caraceni family that had been a tailoring family for a few generations. His father Tommaso Caraceni from Ortona a Mare taught his craft to Domenico and his brothers Galliano and Augusto. The shop from 1913 was closed two years after due to the war. Domenico Caraceni opened his main shop in 1926 at Via Boncompagni 21 in Rome and later in Milan, Naples and Paris. The Paris atelier was operated by Domenico's brother, Augusto.
Domenico combined the English tailoring, which he learned from Francesco Paolo Tosti, with the Italian and many other tailoring techniques. Domenico was convinced that he invented a new style, combinig all these other styles, making his suits elegant and light at the same time. He wrote his own book in 1933 named “Orientamenti nuovi nella tecnica e nell’arte del sarto” (“New Tendencies in the Technique and Art of Tailoring”).
There are several separate tailoring bussines under the name of Caraceni today. The original shop in Rome operates with a very small workforce and it is owned by Tommy and Giulio Caraceni, nephews of Domenico. In Milan, there are three branches of the brand but A. Caraceni, operated by the son of Augusto Mario Caraceni, is believed to be best. Gianni Campagna who was formerly an apprentice at Sartoria Domenico Caraceni in Milan, bought the Sartoria Domenico Caraceni brandin 1998. Under this name, his company makes expensive tailor-made suits out of the Palazzo Bernasconi in Milan.
