Lucien Lelong (1889 – 1958) is a French fashion (haute couture) designer. His “golden age” was the era from the 1920s to the 1940s. His contemporaries were Chanel, Worth, Patou, Lanvin and Schiaparelli.

Lucien Lelong was born in Paris in 1889 and learned the bases of fashion and textile business from his father, a textile shop owner. He was later trained at the Hautes Etudes Commerciales in Paris at the age of 22 (from 1911 to 1913), and by 1914 he had already designed his first collection. In 1919, he opened his own eponymous fashion house and became extremely influential in the Parisian fashion scene regarded as a fabrics connaisseur. He was also the President of the Chambre Syndicale de la Couture for many years and became one of the first designers to create a highly profitable ready-to-wear collection.

Lucien Lelong began his perfumery adventure in 1924, as he considered it to be an integral part of every woman’s style. His designs and the enigmatic traits of women served as the inspiration for the perfume creations, thus The Société des Parfums Lucien Lelong was born and it would continue to exist well after Lelong closed the door to his fashion house. His proteges, Dior and Balmain, introduced their own perfumes immediately after starting their own fashion houses, probably inspired by their teacher.

The first fragrances of the house were named A, B, C, J and N and were intended to evoke a sense of mystery and romance. The artfully crafted bottles were mainly designed by Lelong himself. He ended up creating 27 different fragrances in total.

Lucien Lelong closed his fashion house in 1948 when he became ill, but did not close his perfumery business which existed under his direction until his death in 1958 and long after he was gone.
