The house of M•A•C Cosmetics is a worldwide famous house of cosmetics. The house was founded in Toronto, Canada by Frank Toscan and Frank Notarangelo in 1984. The first U.S M•A•C store opened in 2003, in Greenwich Village, New York. The name of M•A•C Cosmetics, worldwide famous house of cosmetics actually stands for Makeup Artist Cosmetics.

Founders of the house started working together to initiate a cosmetics business concept envisaged by Notarangelo. He was the owner of a successful chain of hair salons and he teamed up with Frank Toscan, makeup artist and fashion photographer.

They both had the knowledge of the industry and named their company M•A•C Cosmetics, which stands for Makeup Artist Cosmetics. In the very beginning of the house, the direction they took in business differed from the path of other cosmetics houses. The company first started designing products specifically for professional make-up artists, to meet their needs and requirements. As popularity of the products increased, they are now sold to consumers worldwide.

One of the guidelines of this house was to follow trends in fashion and makeup that were changing rapidly. Some of the most popular trends visible in their makeup were glam, goth, glitter etc. MAC has always made an effort to be ahead of their competition and to be the first house introducing new trends.

The first U.S M•A•C store opened in 2003, in Greenwich Village, New York. Estée Lauder Companies acquired M•A•C completely in 1998.

MAC offers an incredibly wide range of makeup products and shades, which also makes them unique. You can find over 160 various shades of lipstick and 150 shades of eye shadow!

MAC cosmetics is a socially aware cosmetics house and regularly contributes to important social causes.

The MAC AIDs fund was founded in 1994 with an aim to ensure help and financial assistance to men, women and children suffering from AIDS. The fund is financed entirely by the sale of their Viva Glam products. Whichever product from this collection the customers buy, 100% of the sales revenues go directly to the fund. Since 2008 the MAC AIDs fund has managed to raised a full $128 million.

Other social initiative programs by MAC are:
M•A•C Cruelty-Free Beauty: the house does not test their products on animals and the policy refers to ingredient suppliers as well.
Back 2 M•A•C Recycling: offers free lipgloss, eyeshadow, or lipstick at any M•A•C location to the customers who return six empty M•A•C containers.
M•A•C Kids Helping Kids: a project initialized in 1994. It enables children living with HIV/AIDS create images that are reproduced as greeting cards. 100% of selling price goes back to participating organizations.
