Norman Norell (1900-1972) was an American fashion designer, known for his elegant and feminine designs.

From his childhood days he had an ambition to become an artist. He studied illustration at Parsons School of Design in New York in 1919 and fashion design at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn from 1920-1922. His career began when he became a costume designer for Paramount Pictures and theatrical costume designer on Broadway in the New York City. He designed costumes for Gloria Swanson and other big stars of silent movies. In 1928, he was hired by the fashion designer Hattie Carnegie and remained there until 1941. In 1943, he won a Coty Fashion Award and became a critic at Pratt Institute fashion department.

Soon after, he partnered with Anthony Traina and established the fashion company Traina-Norrell. By, 1944 his evening dresses and designs were becoming famous.

Norman Norell’s fashion is simple, elegant and well made as well as flattering and luxurious, made for evening wear, respected by Parisian couturiers. He is famous for his flattering suits that would skin the body and emphasize its silhouette.

Norell was the first American designer with his name on a dress label, and the first to produce a successful American fragrance with a designer name. The Norell fragrance was launched in 1968.
