Fourrures Weil, a small family-owned company of furriers, was founded in 1912. The three brothers Jacques, Marcel and Alfred Weil, who had made furs for the wealthy for years, made a natural move in offering perfumes to their clients. Parfums Weil was established in 1927. The original idea was to scent fur coats which tend to develop their own smell but this idea quickly evolved and real perfumes were available. All perfumes that were sold between 1927 and 1954 came in bottles made by Baccarat.
During the war in 1940s the company closed their offices in Paris and moved to the USA. The factory in Paris is said to have been seized by the Nazis and, apparently, several perfumes were produced by them. In the end, those fragrances were not launched. After the war the factory officially went back into the Weil family's ownership.
Parfums Weil had changed ownership for several times. Since the 1960s the company has been owned by a wealthy Algerian family, Fashion Fragrances, Classic Fragrances Ltd, Cosmetiques et Parfums de France and InterParfums (Aroli).
The house's first fragrances, created in collaboration with perfumer Claude Frayesse, were meant to be used on fur coats to mask the fur's own natural odor. The fragrances were named Hermine, Chinchilla or Zibeline and were supposed to be used on the equivalent fur. Zibeline, for example, is a powerful fragrance with intense civet. Jasmine, sandalwood, aldehydes, honey, iris, tarragon and coriander round the composition.
Weil have launched a number of fragrances for use on skin. Secret de Venus, a classic and feminine chypre floral perfume was presented in 1933. It features prominent notes of lavender, grapefruit, bergamot, cassia, peach, lemon, freesia, gardenia, jasmine, vanilla, cedar, patchouli and sandalwood. Antilope from 1946, a floral aldehydic perfume, was composed of notes of neroli, bergamot, aldehydes, clary sage, rose, lily of the valley, jasmine, carnation, iris, violet, sandalwood, vetiver, patchouli, tonka, amber, oak moss and musk.
1971 saw the launch of Weil de Weil, a green floral perfume for women. The main accords that dominate this composition are tangerine, neroli, green notes, galbanum, hyacinth, lily of the valley, honeysuckle, ylang-ylang, mimosa, rose, daffodil, sandalwood, vetiver, civets, musk and oak moss.
More recent releases that have been created since the company is part of InterParfums are Weil Pour Homme, Sweet Bambou 2005, Eau de Weil and So Weil.
