Cast of Sex and The City in Perfumes

Four women, four life stories, friends, fashion, shopping, men and …New York! Few will not guess that we are talking about the series and this year’s movie Sex and the City, with its cult, long-lasting focus on women in their thirties and forties, social themes and inevitable love stories and life in one of the most dynamic metropoles of the world. It intertwines with luxurious, fashionable accessories and charming humor.

The series Sex and the City lasted six seasons on HBO, from 1998 till 2004, and it showed life path, business success, emotional ups and downs of all characters of the show. It received many awards (Emmy, Golden Globe). It was filmed in Silvercup Studios in New York and on Manhattan in the beginning.

The story of the series is based on a book by writer Candace Bushnell, which is composed of numerous columns published in New York Observer. Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker), the writer’s alter ego, is the narrator and one of the main actresses in the series and the movie. Her three friends are beside her: Samantha Jones (Kim Cattrall), the oldest of all four, with high sexual self-esteem and professionally independent, Charlotte York (Kristin Davis), conservative and endlessly romantic, and Miranda Hobbes (Cynthia Nixon), career-woman, lawyer with a cynical view of relationships with men.

Apart from the women, there is a man in the center of attention. He is the love of Carrie Bradshaw’s life, known as Mr. Big (Chris Noth), who got the role of rich, charming and sarcastic man. He manages to fulfill and destroy all dreams and emotions of the main actress and does not care about the consequences.

I would not like to deal with roles, romances, actresses’ social status or luxurious clothes and accessories worn by Carrie, Miranda, Charlotte and Samantha, or with modern fetish-shoes which are also in the first plan, but with our beloved fragrances and our perfumes for the cast. I say ‘ours’, since Ivana (Ina_Mo) also gave her fragrancy propositions on this occasion.

I watched the whole series and the movie (I am a fan, I admit, as half the planet), so I was thinking about which perfumes I could connect with a particular character. It is difficult to pinpoint fragrances which go with actresses’ wardrobe, since they change it all the time, so I tried to connect perfumes with personalities and temperaments shown in the popular series.

I will start with the columnist, Carrie, who is endlessly charming, fluffy, rational and emotional in the same time, and who is, just like any other woman, crazy about fashion and new fashionable accessories, and is a passionate shoppingholic.

I will not focus on perfumes which were presented in ‘real world’ under actress Sarah Jessica Parker’s name, Lovely and Covet, respectively. I see this New Yorker as wearing Givenchy Ange ou Demon, Paloma Picasso - Paloma Picasso, Agent Provocateur – Eau Emotionelle, Dior Poison or for example Annick Goutal Grand Amour...

Charlotte likes a classic, strict and more romantic style in fashion, so I would choose YLS Paris (even though the accent of the series lies on New York), DKNY Red Delicious, Annick Goutal - Eau de Charlotte, Stella McCartney - Stella in Two, Bvlgari – Rose Essentiele, Boucheron Miss Boucheron or even Guerlain-Insolence. I would like to point out that charming actress Kirstin Davis has recently appeared on film premiere in Berlin with precious jewerly from the luxury Boucheron house. Boucheron Chinna Pampilles earings made of diamonds and white gold gave her a perfect glamour look for the premiere evening.

I think that fresh and discrete fragrances of floral-aquatic olfactive group would be perfect for Miranda: Cacharel Eau de Eden, Hermes Un Jardin En Mediterranee, Kenzo-L’Eau par Kenzo, or chypre floral Sisley - Eau du Soir and Chanel Chance Eau Fraiche.

The perfect gift for seductive Samantha would be explosive perfumes like: Dior Addict, Thierry Mugler Le Lys, Dior Miss Dior Cherie, Laura Biagiotti Sotto Voce, Annick Goutal Passion or intoxicating red D&G.

And of course, inevitable Mr. Big would smell like money, bohemian life, Cuban cigars, expensive cars, charming men with ‘old guard’… like Chanel Egoiste, Guerlain Heritage, Loccitane Eau de Baux, YSL-M7, Versace Dreamer or Aramis Havana.

Ivana’s (Ina_Mo) suggestions also start with the main New Yorker Carrie, who leaves an indelible trace with her columns about life in New York. She leaves a strong, fragrancy trace behind herself as she walks the streets in a self-confident manner.

Ideal perfumes for her would be the ones which make you turn around after Carrie, something sweet and powerful, something to highlight her personality and persistence.

Perfumes ideal for her would be oriental, sweet ones, such as Emporio Armani Diamonds, which Carrie would be able to wear just like real diamonds. Besides those, I believe that fruity-floral perfumes Cartier Delices and Juicy Couture, which are sweet, but intensive like Carrie herself, would fit her perfectly.

Seductive Samantha always feels great in her own skin. She has confidence in herself and her performance and she is very outgoing to people. She is often surrounded by luxury and gold, so she might like the perfume Donna Karan Gold. We all know that the name of the series is Sex and the City, and the main representative of the first part of the title is precisely Samantha. For this reason I would recommend provocative, sensual perfumes which attract men irresistibly: Paco Rabanne Black XS and JPG Classique.

Miranda, as a successful business woman, strives for minimalism and simplicity. She tries to stay sustained and a bit cold in difficult situations in life. The perfumes that would fit her lifestyle would be simple, but intoxicating like herself: L'eau d'Issey, Cool Water Davidoff Freeze Me and Perles de Lalique.

Charlotte is an embodiment of femininity, romance and fluffiness. She is trying to achieve harmony in love life, so I think that a floral harmony would be an excellent companion for her. I imagine her wrapped in classic, tender and very floral aromas like those offered by: opulent Anais Anais, sophisticated Champs Elysees or unobtrusive Hugo Boss Femme.

Mr. Big is again at the end of Ivana’s fragrancy story. He desires a perfume which will ensure he will be noticed. He is a heartbreaker and he needs a perfume which will attract women just like charming Mr. Big. Good suggestions for him are oriental perfumes, definitely: Euphoria Men Intense – powerful and intensive, and Allure Homme Edition Blanche – attractive and memorable.

These would be our fragrancy recommendations and they only stand for our personal impression of the romantic characters which most of us have been following during many episodes for years. If you are interested, we can continue our cast of perfumes on the forum…
