Chandler Burr The Untitled Series #S01E02

Initial impression : fraîcheur aérien, transparent, verdant, unisex et synthétique.

Sometimes, only French will do—and believe me, it’s certainly not my first language. [It’s not even my second. ;-)] But when it comes to descriptors regarding perfume, my mind simply switches gears, it’s a personal sickness of mine.

My UPS man [bless his patient and tolerant soul!] just delivered my second "blind sniff" to which Chandler Burr fondly refers as The Untitled Series: an opportunity for perfumaniacs like myself [or you] to describe what you feel when you’re presented with an unlabeled well-known mainstream perfume, sans notes or blurb.

What I smell is an extremely well-constructed, deceptively appealing citrus / spice / floral / woody / amber / musk that would be highly marketable to a relatively young demographic. It succeeds where others may not—in that it clings closely to the skin long after application, and the wearer may not even be sensible of its lingering presence.

The overall sensation is of cleanliness, as Westerners perceive it. An outdoorsy laundry-like musk flirts with amber aromachemicals and lily of the valley [none of which occur naturally] with lightly citrus-y, fruity overtones on the top. A few whiffs of spice, but not overdone.

I’m possessed by mental images of extremely well-toned, well-tanned gloriously beautiful slender young men and women frolicking on the beach, perhaps playing volleyball. They are wholesome and inoffensive—just as this scent is.

Anyone could wear it—and I’ll bet that it is a BIG seller at Macy’s, Sephora—just about anywhere.

The color is aquamarine, pale, blue-green, transparent. The music is anything from Handel’s Water Music to Lady Gaga and back again.

That’s it, folks.  ;-)

Fixed. Thanks, Sherapop! :-)

I don't think it is Mugler's Cologne. I have smelled that and my scent memory of it is different, though it has been a few years since I gave it a good sniff.

small correction on the French, Ida:

fraîcheur

(you put the accent over the 'a', not the 'i')

I wonder whether it's Thierry Mugler Cologne, which was created by Alberto Morillas and apparently smells synthetic. I have not ever tried it, but it will be interesting to see whether that's what 02 is. Morillas is a sci-fi perfumer, in my experience...

Euse: I agree that the idea is very gimmicky because the ultimate goal is not to experience fragrance in its pure, unmarketed form but to sample fragrances that will then (most likely) realize a spike in sales in their full package form. And while good fragrance criticism is in the nose of the beholder, I was willing to play along with S0E102 because the description was compelling and the price of entry was relatively cheap--$25 vs $50 which was the asking price for the first installment. I do enjoy the experience of fragrance, so I'm willing to play along from time to time. Chandler Burr is simply the conduit; he's not the reason why--at least for me.

Dear Ida, absolutely agree with you. Dear friends, I usually don't like to read press releases, and love to read reviews, especially when the author is brave enough to share his/her own world with readers. I think we should be grateful.

About words... phrases...mistakes...etc... I am not a writer, and English is not my first language, and it's not even my second (first - Russian, second - Serbian/Bosnian), but I love English for its exactness and frankness (to my ear, in Russian we use much more euphemisms), I love ability of languages to reflect some subjects so clear, sometimes poetic, sometimes emotional, sometimes funny... And I love passionate people, people with a position, who dares to say, and reading them I don't care about some roughness, I don't read to find mistakes.

I like to draw, and my friend and my teacher says please don't try to reach computer exactness of your strokes, let computer make it (in the case with perfumes - marketing team). Every personal touch, even a mistake, reflects yourself, and your work lives. I think this is the core of the creative process. I admire our writers.

Thanks, Elena... I appreciate your support.

But I see how woefully I miswrote, and I apologize for appearing like a wankeress.

I meant to say that first I spoke English- then I had to learn Yiddish [ to defend myself ;-0]-
But sometimes another language just seems so right- no matter what that language might be...

@silverfire,

sorry to butt in, but Ida is the farthest from arrogant or conceited that I -or anyone- could think of. She is simply a wonderful, old soul in a young-spirited woman's body. I guess her writing reflects that. :-)

body67, totally agree!!! never mind for the nice ballons, i gave you one ;)
i personally think chandler is overrated, but this "show" is the cherry on the cake... Let's sell already existing fragrances under Burr's name in a generic/cheap bottle for a high price. can't believe it's actually working...

Mine arrived a few days ago. Chandler's description was too intriguing NOT to bite...My initial thought: a perfect selection for the heatwave covering the country. Fresh, and clean, it is unisex or possibly a fragrance conceived for men that a woman is happy to steal from time to time. For me, it's a lily of the valley and spicy start that ends with a warm, amber afterglow. I was disappointed with the amount of time it remained on my skin yet others commented on it long after I could smell it on me. It is familiar in the sense that it is easy to wear. Chandler's description made me curious. Worth a try.

I received mine last week: it is most definitely NOT CKOne :) My first impression is that it has a green, sweet sappy dominant note. It's not like the green sap of Philosykos, which is pleasantly sharp, but rather, it is a sweet sort of sap, like a snap-pea in spring. The drydown is a very clean smell, to me, but not like the crappy synthetic "clean" fragrances, but like a nice, expensive Italian soap. I like green fragrances, and this one is no exception, I do like it. It says fresh without assaulting your nose (or that of anyone around you :) And I am female, but I do believe this is a cologne: that said, there is nothing masculine in particular about this, and it could easily be worn by males or females.

Mine arrived today!

And I'm 100% certain it's not CkOne, LOL!

Ida, you mentioned musk, amber and spicy notes. I get much more of those than the green plant-like aspects about which Chandler waxes poetic.

Interesting suggestion, amg7240. Burr gives hints in the video and description that this perfumer has made large amounts of money for the industry. Alberto Morillas, one of the perfumers on 212 Men, is one of the perfumers who came to mind based on that description, though not that scent. I'll wait until I get a chance to sniff it before making any additional guesses.

@body67: Morillas is also one of the perfumers on ckOne. I sure hope that's not what it is, LOL!

Euse, for some reason, I cannot give you the 'thumbs up', so I'll waste my time on this particular thread to say that I agree with you, it is a shameless, more than transparent huge scam and self plug (Raymond, how much did you get paid to sell crappy frags at pumped up prices, give them free advertising and increase sales to otherwise mediocre perfumes coming from huge conglomerate houses?). Please, oh please, God, let the next 'study' be CKOne! I'd just HAVE TO write ROTFL (which I have never used up to now).

Mr. Burr's description sounds very interesting and I'd like to give it a sniff; the idea of olfactory art (and science fiction at that) is intriguing. However, the mention of "laundry-like musk" just turns me off.

Thank you, Ida! I don't know if I missed it but have been very curious lately to know the name of the mystery scent from his first series. Perhaps I couldn't follow it?

I ordered the second installment through Open Sky (along with quite a few other things, she guiltily says). I'm looking forward to the experience. The notes sound divine. I regretted missing the first offering, but when it was revealed to be Prada's Infusion d'Iris, the disappointment ended. Been there - sniffed that. ;-)

NLS, I think it's OpenSky....I have purchased a couple of other things from them and it seems to take awhile longer. I wonder what this scent is?! Great article with more information on #2!

Nice, Ida!

I ordered mine on the first morning it became available, and it STILL isn't here. Drat the slow UPS delivery times to the Midwest. ;-) Reading this really makes me curious.
