Coco Noir is a new perfume to be launched in September 2012. It will be available at department and specialty stores.

"For Coco Noir, I thought of Coco and of Coco Mademoiselle too, because it’s also part of the history. I wanted to continue exploring an entire esthetic range of CHANEL perfumery, a range that distinguishes itself from the Florals, one that is illustrated by Bois-des-Iles and Cuir de Russie. I took it up with Coco. It’s what I like to call the CHANEL Coromandel culture, what you see and feel in her apartment. The night vision of the ‘Orient that starts and ends in Venice’ imposed itself upon me and that is where I wanted to go.”        Jacques Polge

In 1984, there was Coco, that sumptuous blend of wood, resins, flowers, spices and fruit. A treasure trove of splendours and an endless source of discovery and sensual delight. Then, in 2001, came Coco Mademoiselle, a breath of air that lightens this cornucopia of fragrance, in which everything is simplified and accelerated in a radiant burst of fruit and flower.

And today there is Coco Noir, a great nocturnal Baroque. Another journey in the wake of a Gabrielle who fully embraced the dazzle of black and Venice, incorporating them not only into her creations but into her life.

In Venice, city of memories and promise, Gabrielle Chanel experienced a renewal. She had traveled there to mourn the only man she ever loved, Boy Capel. She realized that she didn’t like fussy dresses, and she wasn’t going to fuss about when it came to matters of the heart. She drew strength from her discovery of the city and all of the wonders it had to offer.

She contrasted her simple, sober style with the riot of color and gold, and the purity of her lines with the baroque arabesques. The Venetian night simply confirmed what she already knew: for the moon and stars to be beautiful, they had to be absorbed and transformed by the water and the sky. For a woman to be seductive, she had to be both mysterious and light hearted. She thus refined her remarkable equation of black and bright, of profusion and restraint. From this journey to the almost-Orient, she retained the refinement of Byzantine art, the sense of grandeur and the certainty that you can renounce anything, except yourself.

For Jacques Polge, the spirit of this fragrance is concentrated in its woody base and musky notes—the way spices define Coco and fresh jasmine defines Coco Mademoiselle. Like the black velvet of a famous Venetian craftsman who dyed his cloth in successive layers to bring radiance out of the darkness, the base of Coco Noir is
generously layered with sandalwood, vetiver, frankincense, patchouli, vanilla, tonka bean and a musky note. It is a profusion, which, by its very excesses, brightens and arranges itself into a perfect, enveloping and precious form.

This tension between shadow and light becomes truly meaningful in the overall composition. The spicy freshness of pink peppercorns and grapefruit tinges the top note with Tiepolo* pink and gives it a fresh, light and lively momentum. Then comes the long sensual breath of a flesh-white heart of jasmine, rose and narcissus, as disconcerting as it is elegant. Lastly, the ample, symphonic movement of the base is revealed, where everything ties together, springs forth and radiates. The notes bring us back to the legacy and remind us what a fragrance owes women and what a woman owes herself. Cedar imposes its lofty dryness on more expansive balms, and rose geranium leaf, cultivated in Grasse, adds a minty touch to the opulent seduction of beautiful flowers.

COCO NOIR COMPOSITION:

Grapefruit note
Calabrian Bergamot

Essence and Absolute of Rose
Absolute of Jasmine
Narcissus Note
Rose Geranium Leaf

Brazilian and Venezuelan Tonka Bean
Indonesian Patchouli
New Caledonian Sandalwood
Bourbon Vanilla
White Musk Frankincense

* Giovanni Battista Tiepolo (1696-1770). A prolific artist for the European courts, this Italian rococo painter and engraver remains best known for the large fresco cycles he created in Venice and his region. His name was given to a particularly bright shade of pink.

Sounds like it might be promising but I hate grapefruit smell in any perfume. And why would Venice smell like grapefruit, pray tell? Hmmm. I'll pass on this one and let the rest of you guys review it :-)

I can't wait to test this but I already get the feeling that I will be disappointed, who tested it is now reporting that coco noir is nothing special: there is such a big fuss for the launch here in Italy it had better be good

Had a sniff of this today on the Chanel sales assistant as the Chanel rep had been to my local store. Firsly to my nose it didn't resemble Coco Mademoiselle which I detest, nor did it resemble Coco which I love. It smelt heavy of patchouli, it reminded me of Cristelle which I like but much heavier, more of an evening scent. I'm not going to run out and buy it on 17th August.
Its just ok.

For all...I have tested, extensively, C.Noir and it is very similar to C.Madame...You can definitely tell it packs more of a "punch"...also I can confirm that it will launch August 17th...Nordstrom near me in Tysons Virgina is having a launch event...I have 2 pre-ordered!

tested this a few days ago thinking I would order it pre-launch...not impressed. I'm a HUGE fan of anything Chanel and absolutely love Coco Mademoiselle but this one fell totally flat for me. It smelled ok at first but the scent was almost immediately imperceptible on my skin, in spite of me having sprayed quite a bit on just 10 minutes earlier. I won't be buying this one and hope maybe someone else has a better experience with it, especially with the $98-$130 price tag. There are a lot of other great fragrances out there at this price point or below.

I got to smell it but you know? I have a bottle of coco mad which is what I smelled more of.

I'll have to extensively test and wear it around I think, but at first sniff (we weren't allowed to spray on skin) its too similar to what I already have. That bottle of coco mad will last me a lifetime, so I think I'll just wait, until they allow spraying on skin, or hell, just buy a bottle of coco (which I did like tbh)

The bottle is hot though. They did a great job on that at least.

I love Coco Noir because I love the orange, geranuium, sandalwood and incense. Its a beautiful perfume.

If you are expecting a certain experience based on Coco OR C.Mademoiselle, then you'll be confused. Just keep an open mind and allow this perfume to become herself over time. Remember the first days of Bleu de Chanel.

We need to be respectful of the career and sucessful history of a perfumer such as Jacques Polge. Do you really believe his team would release an inferior perfume? No. Chanel would not do that.

It is artful and balanced and observant of a specific vision - and we have yet to hear the story of this perfume. Just be patient!

To me Noir communicates many nuances that Coco could not. For me one spray lasted on a card for four days and on my skin for six hours.

I went by neiman's today and asked if they heard of any changes. They say not, their dates hold as they've told pretty much everyone. I guess they haven't gotten the memo yet.

So am I gettin this right? Chanel has pushed back the date on the release of the Coco Noir to a date in September?? What gives? Where did the August 17 date originate?? Does anyone have any insight into this? I contacted Nordstrom's to pre-order thinking it was going to be released 8-17. If I have to wait till September, I'll certainly live with it-but it will be a major disappoint! Please, somebody tell me what's going on!

GOSH, THE EXCITEMENT! Learned about it through an email from the Chanel website. Hope this will live up to the original Coco, but I'm sure that it will not be as dark, sultry, strong, elegant and bold as the original. That's just how modern perfumes are today in order to sell. The original Coco makes my head swim in delight.

Based on the notes, I do suspect that it will smell like the rose infused heart of Coco on the Coromandel base--GETTING MYSELF EXCITED!

I will stand proudly at the Chanel counter/boutique to get myself a bottle no matter what it smells like!

smcandsmc, I HEAR YOU! Nothing like a mob of "Chanel whores" in a rustle of elbows! LOL!

Someone quoted Coco Chanel was a fascist, arrogant old lady on this page, now it's gone. Fascist, perhaps--she was a perfectionist after all. Arrogant, in a way--back then, women weren't allowed to be successful and influential, much less empowering women to be able to LITERALLY wear pants, a big hand-to-mouth thing in those days.

@APassionateJourney I believe they "had" to, probably because Chanel wanted it to be a secret-surprise.As a chanel website subscriber- i received an email last night informing me about a new womens launch. They wouldnt reveal neither the bottle nor the name.Yet i already knew from fragrantica first and other websites that Coco noir IS the new womens fragrance. ;)I guess that makes sense...The bottle is gorgeous.I just hope this is male friendly!thumbs up

I had figured as much @ jeca, some companies don't like having their product launches 'spoiled' so to speak. But VERY surprised to hear it won't be out until September considering Neimans chanel counter was saying August 17 or 19th.

I just wonder what thats going to do about people that have preordered at the counter thinking it would be arriving this month?

It smells like it should be a flanker or reformulation of Guerlain's Shalimar; bergamot + citrus, rose, jasmine, vanilla, patchouli, musk, frankincense, tonka. bean. Of course people will say its different, its a Chanel, its fabulous, but I'm here to here to tell you what you want to hear. Rather, id like to tell you what's real. Price tag; 100ml is $152 Canadian, 50ml is $112 Canadian.

We didn’t get any press embargo notice before we published the news about Chanel Noir, last week. The information about the fragrance was freely available on the Internet and, since Fragrantica has over 3 million monthly readers - and among them all major industry insiders and retailers - I may just imagine how phones, emails and faxes started to ring in Chanel offices and all over their distributer network, asking them for a fragrance they did not ship yet. There are several approaches to marketing... when Gizmodo broke the news about the iPhone, then Apple Corporation used that momentum to build it into the most expected product launch in the history. In this case PR guys just hit the panic button and asked people around the web to shut the story down. That is also OK – at the end, this anecdote about the fragrance launch has nothing to do with the fragrance.
I haven’t had a pleasure to try it out yet, but I hope that Chanel will surprise us one more time with another amazing fragrance. This whole story will be irrelevant, very soon, and we’ll all (I hope so) love the new scent and recognize its trail on the people we meet, as it becomes the part of our mind map.

To show you how sad my city is, none of the ladies at the perfume counter even KNOW that there is a new Chanel coming out next month. They were like "the new no.19 something... the green bottle stuff thingie??" I was like, no.19 Poudre??? What the.
