Green: The Color of Spring is Always In!

The bitter cold and snowy winter seems endless this year. I am joyously anticipating spring and embracing its first signs. I always immerse myself into celebrations preceding the times of hope and joy. Youthful Spring smells in hundreds of shades of green, doesn't it?

During this wonderful transition the thought of life-giving green always comes back to me. Is it in the smell of green? I don't know.  Ask Spring!

One of the brightest green fragrances introduced two years ago (2008) is Fleur de Liane by L'Artisan Parfumeur. This refreshing scent, green as grass and juicy as the sap of young green branches, pleasantly surprised many of us, which is not easy nowadays!

Fleur de Liane was launched in the middle of Fall, but once you breathe it in, you dream of a new wonderful spring. Do you feel a smile coming from within this scent?

Labyrinthe Libertin by Le Prince Jardinier
represents another fresher and lighter mid-spring nuance of green, filled with breezy blooming air.

A tart nuance of boxwood comes to us a little bit later and takes us back to early spring, before the leaves and flowers appear on the branches, to the smells of tree bark. Naked, it thrills with anticipation of new life.

I can't overlook a wonderful and quite old fragrance, Eau de Campagne by Sisley (1974), which remains eternally young in its character.

It is clean, fresh, strong and wonderfully dark green, thanks to the overdose of a very unusual ingredient from the greenhouse—a tomato leaf. It is wonderfully partnered with other elements of this chypre composition: bergamot, galbanum, vetiver, and oakmoss. If you enjoy an icy cold shower in the morning, Eau de Campagne by Sisley could be your fragrance.

Another fragrance reserved only for the brave is Palais Jamais by Etro. This fragrance is not shy.  It is sharp. In addition to the green elements, it contains ingredients traditional to the Italian domain: citruses and leather. The fragrance arms you with cocky feelings of attractiveness and aggressiveness. Beware of people's reactions after they catch a waft of your cologne! The next step is yours.

I added two more fragrances for this green column. Both are new and satisfy very strict "Green" requirements with their green smell, green appearance, and compositions of natural green oils and essences.

The colors in the picture are genuine: Trevert is preciously emerald green, composed of pine absolute, leafy flouve absolute, and ambery clary sage. Trevert is a pleasant relaxing walk in the pine forest. Can you recall the thick and tenaciously bewitching smell of pine needles? Trevert is all about that. The presence of the scent is long-lasting, but also intimate and subdued, like a kind and pleasant companion.

Aftelier was founded by Mandy Aftel, the well-known natural perfumer from California. Mandy is a founder and former president of the Natural Perfumers Guild. She is the author of several books on natural perfumery, including Essence and Alchemy, and the most recent Scents And Sensibilities.

The signature fragrance Green by A Perfume Organic is made not only of
natural ingredients, but each of them is also individually certified-organic.

A dirty sensual note of black truffle and a great amount of yellow ylang-ylang influence the olfactive color of the perfume, adding the cozy golden shades. Even though you can smell the rose in its heart, this fragrance is woody-green and the entire impression is distinctly Green.

The A Perfume Organic perfumes are hand-blended in Manhattan (NYC) by natural perfumer Amanda Walker, who founded the house in 2009. Her collection offers a line of four fragrances including my personal favorite, sweet citrusy masterpiece Urban Organic.

Good article with lovely photos. If you've ever picked tomatoes in a summer greenhouse and you like the smell, then Sisley's Eau de Campagne is for you. One of the greenest scents.

To JECA :

Thank for your suggestions.

The issue with CDG and Jo Malone's creations is the lasting power .... :-/

Not that I don't want to test "Voyages Olfactifs Paris-Tolyo" but it's not gonna happen overnight ;o) as the only official Guerlain boutique near Belgium is the Champs-Elysées'one, in Paris.

Green has so many tones ;o) For mint note I try Commes des Garcons Mint from Leaves series and Jo Malone.

Try Les Voyages Olfactifs 03 Paris-Tokyo Guerlain, it's not much about mint, but it's simple, refreshing, green, lovely.

You seem to know very well the green family, so may I ask you to help me ? :)

Since Guerlain Aqua Allegoria "MENTAFOLLIA", which was the perfect summer scent because of its blend of GREEN TEA and MINT, has unfortunately been discontinued, I'm searching for an other "blast of fresh air"-summer scent. I want it to be long-lasting and truly refreshing (I guess I need mint !! ^^ ).
Could you (or anyone here) please give me any suggestions ?

Thanks.

Angelica.

Great article Jeca, Chapeau :)
I've been craving for a green fragrance lately, so you article came at the right time, but unfortunately none of the perfumes you suggested in available in my country. Jeca please come up with another more "mainstreaming" list that could be considered as part2 to this one. Thanks.

Well, Zoka, to be good and to be rare are not always the same things ;o)
I love all the fragrances I chose. I don't see anything wrong in becoming popular, L'Artisan Parfumeur makes it with taste, and I was glad to see it in Duty Free.

L'Artisan Parfumeur is getting pretty mainstream... well, it is not in every shop but you can find it even at good airport fragrance shops. Etro is also pretty popular... but all other are really very rare fragrances.

Thank you for your fantastic article Jeca ☻

I have to admit that I have never neither heard nor seen any of perfume brands you wrote about ☺ I'm genuinely a Fragrance novice and your article is such an eye-opener for me.

There is a lot of new things to learn for me ☻

Cheers,
