How to Make Your Own Perfume

How to Make Your Own Perfume

04/24/09 04:15:37

By: Sandra Raičević-Petrović

Perfumes are an endless game of sensuality, intuition, self-comprehension and view of oneself. It was the first time I had an opportunity to choose the notes of a perfume, which I will also name. What joy, I thought; it is easy to choose everything I want to place in my fragrant elixir! This became really simple, thanks to MyParfuem.com company, which enabled a fun game with notes which will be developed for you by their perfumers and sent to your home address in a short time.

I will begin my story from the very beginning. Website MyParfuem.com is in front of you, with simple instructions how to combine a fragrance for yourself. The first division you find is selection between fragrance for women and for men. One click further will take you to four olfactive groups. After my choice of exotic group I arrived to about thirty various ingredients which I could include in my fragrant composition. There is an option to choose intensity of each ingredient (1,2,3), which you can choose yourself, combine and play with them.

I knew what I wanted to smell approximately, since I have never had a problem with that, I have always known what I wanted. An oriental-juicy fragrance, without retro scent; thick, sweet, opulent, gently gourmand, a fragrance which does not have to be strong and intensive, but very tame, fondling, sensual and extremely attractive. I chose gentle apple blossom which gives freshness to the fragrance, tangerine aromas for fresher and sweeter effect of the beginning, with very memorable ylang-ylang, flower above flowers, mixed with neroli, which I am also very fond of.

Peach will give complete juiciness, hint of almonds and coconut introduce gourmand tact, hot ambergris and Tonka beans produce a clear oriental-fiery expression, while woody accords of cedar and sandalwood reflect the Orient and animalistic sound, while adding more character to the fragrance. That was it, my fragrance, which, according to my idea, represents my character perfectly.

The fragrance was named Sandrina, and I was waiting for 15 days to get to know my first fragrant concept, developed with help of perfumers from MyParfuem.com company. It seemed very unserious to me to name the perfume I was creating Sandrina, but to be honest, I really like it know, since I know that I am the only one who will have this particular fragrance!

I did not know what to expect or what the scent will be like, which ingredients will be accentuated or how the fragrance will develop on my skin, until I tried it. If I had had an opportunity to develop this fragrance myself, combining different intensity and variations of each ingredient, I suppose that work on creation would have been even more interesting. But I was very content with the result of this, what I created by choosing intuitively. I wish I could try out variations of the existing perfume Sandrina, and add or reduce intensity of some ingredients, so that I could feel diversity of their nuances.

If you think you are not able to choose the right ingredient for your fragrant ‘baby’ or if you don’t know how a certain ingredient will affect the composition – creators from MyParfuem.com thought about that as well. They put a description of each ingredient (flower, fruit, woody accords, spices) and an explanation how each ingredient might affect the combination; increase freshness, juiciness, add fruity, oriental or animalistic character. They really simplified the game of creation!

Perfume Sandrina arrived in a 30 ml glass flacon with my name on it. Really fun! I couldn’t wait to try it, since I have not been able to resist the game with perfumes for years. You can feel very sharp notes in the beginning, as well as a strong impact of freshness which appears from recognizable apple blossom, which is gentle, sweet but memorable. Mandarin adds cold notes and juiciness, which is joined by cooling peppermint aromas. After a few minutes, a blast of freshness calms down, even though it stays as a base for the whole composition, as one of layers assisting others notes to come into the first plan; clear, loud, unobtrusive and difficult to wear.

The main theme of the fragrance is a combination of ylang-ylang and neroli, along with gourmand, thick and juicy accords of peach, almond and coconut, which is present in a creamy layer, not accentuated alone, but adds beauty and exotics to flowers. Nothing stands out drastically, but fondles like beautiful cream, close to skin, without wide aura, but very long-lasting. That surprised me pleasantly, having on mind that I can feel the perfume very close to the skin. I can also feel Tonka, with its balmy, tobacco-like effects, hot ambergris and its animalistic side, together with woody accords. The most important thing in the whole fragrance, which I especially liked, is that fresh notes stay present all the time, adding uplift and a higher octave, while not losing themselves like in the classic pyramidal structure 15-25 minutes from the beginning of the fragrance. Before the very finish of the composition, I can feel bitter, woody accords and almonds, which seem dry and very seductive on my skin.

The fragrance is sweet, oriental, thick, warm and has high quality ingredients, which I like a lot. Cuddly and soft effects appear of warm aromas of flowers and fruit zests, with sophisticated freshness, which adds a truly elegant character. I expected more aggressive aromas of ambergris and Tonka, a warmer mixture, but I am very happy with balance of notes and the composition I achieved, exotic Sandrina which will be especially nice for this warm summer. Time of duration of the fragrance on my skin is 5 to 6 hours.

The team working for MyParfuem.com has made an excellent thing, in my humble opinion. Each of us, for an appropriate price of 29 euro for 30 ml eau de parfum with 15% of perfume oils in its composition, takes part in a really available fragrant game that anyone can play. Quality of essences is very good, package is satisfactory, but, what is the most important, is that there is no elite, no fragrances for the special one, since, with the right measure of ingredients in the combination, anyone can be special and name the perfume as they want. When creating your perfume, you can leave your recipe for others to use it. Last 10 recipes of ordered compositions are always visible and that could help you in choosing your fragrant pet. I am also leaving you my recipe to see it, even though I advise you to make your own choice, since it is very amusing to think about intensity and combination of fragrant essences, as well as to compose a story about yourself.

Fragrantica is thankful to company MyParfuem.com and to their team of young, creative people – visioners, who enable us to get familiar with my fragrance, Sandrina. The idea they managed to put into practice while creating and adapting perfume compositions to each particular user, has been really well accepted. One of the young founders of the company, Yannis Niebelschütz, takes care of partnership and marketing, founder Patrick Wilhelm controls quality of work and website, while Nadja Zykina creates the fragrances that we receive. Besides these hardworking people, there are experts for production and design, managers, marketers etc. (You can found out more about them on the site about team of company)

You can leave your fragrant, imaginative creation at website MyParfuem.com. I will certainly try to create a few more perfumes, maybe even one for men… Who knows, it depends on the moment and inspiration… Play and enjoy aromas of life!

I'm very interested in doing this, but I'm not sure what to make of the bases:

There are only four per gender and I'm debating between an oriental base or a floral base. I'm intending to make a rose/lavender with a strong "woody" tone so floral might be best... It would be helpful to know what is in the bases already, so I can keep the scent balanced.

a fresh green and bloomy scent.
I choose green base plus with orchid and peach ,neroli ,tuberose are play along with fresh grass then add some spice and leather plus ambergris.

I love the scent of warm and lure of peach and orchid when it continue dry away.

SO I learn from this one ,after I got this bottle of fresh green flower. I will male another for woody and spice floral

I am very happy that you like the fragrances you created. I really love mine and I am thinking about a new fragrant creation.

I have to tell you that several member have asked me how to set language and change it from German into English, since it was too complicated for them to create on the base of German platform.

The MyParfuem.com website functions in both languages, but an icon that should be in your top right corner and contain two flags shows only if you use Firefox. If you are on IE, you cannot see the icons, even though they are there. We will inform MyParfuem of this problem, since it is very confusing.

I AM JUMPING WITH ELATION!!!

I got mine too, and as I kept sniffing at my creation, I got shivers. I think I did good...really good! Seven postal days to get here--I'm so pleased!

My creation was called "Oriental No. 1"

I used the "Exotic" base along with:

Top notes:
Neroli, Ylang Ylang, Currant Blossom

Middle notes:
Orchid, Jasmine, Musk

Base notes:
Patchouli, Tonka, Vanilla, Ambergris, Sandalwood.

The result was a luminous floral in the beginning right through to the heart as well, although I think the middle stage needed more focus to bring out a definite character, perhaps green notes, but my focus really was to create a very sensual base, though I think their "Exotic" base was a tad too spicy which gave it some gritty edges on the drydown before smoothing itself out. Then again it could've been me with a heavy hand at the tonka. :D

The tenacity is average, more of an eau de toilette.

I can't wait to get on to my next creation!

My perfume arrived today and I am SO pleased with it. Mine is an Exotic one which I named "Mysterious". I chose a citrusy opening with orange, bergamot, and lemon of which the orange is most prominent; followed by a mostly floral middle note of jasmine, rose, neroli, and almond.
But what I really love is the base: Loads of sandalwood, tonka bean, and vanilla, with leather, musk, and amber plus just a touch of cinnamon-- very woody and animalistic.

I haven't been wearing it long enough to comment on the staying power, but the quality seems VERY good.

As a note to other English speaking people who are interested in MyParfeum, all of their correspondence is in German. (Thankfully, I have some knowledge of the language). I just thought it worth mentioning to help people be prepared.

xD I got my own perfume today! It smells somehow like...cleaning agent! Very, very cheap and almost like a peach scented candle! BUT I believe that it's my fault because I mixed together all the things that smell good to me, and didn't add any proper base. The Ingredients are:

Apple Blossom
Raspberry
Watermelon
Aqua
Mandarin
Cassis flower
Rose
Jasmin
Vanilla and
Tonka bean.

I tried so hard to smell any of those out, but I couldn't.
Some fragrances that are similar to my "creation":
Mogan Love de Toi, Tommy Girl, Versace Bright Crystal and all the Escada summer fragrances (especially Ibiza Hippie).
Nevertheless, I can definitely recommend this option to everyone because it's grat fun mixing these ingredients together and maybe, your creations are a bit more like your taste.
I would advise you to chosse only few notes in the top, middle and base, not like I did.
By the way, the fragrance is quite light (you can put on ten sprays or more) and not really longlasting.

I just put in an order for myself. I'M SO EXCITED!!! I always dreamt of creating a version of my own oriental scent. I called it ORIENTAL No. 1 by Aromes Provocateur. HA! So cheesy! I built it along the lines of the Guerlinade accord but substituted rose for blackcurrant along with neroli, orchid and ylang-ylang for a little lift in the beginning. Sadly I had to choose between two crappy bottle designs--the one with hearts or the grassy wisps. I chose the latter.

Gosh, I hope it works and smells clever and sophisticated enough and not some cheapy mess! That was fun though. If it all goes well, I'm going to create a spicy-gourmand scent next. The price for a 1 oz. bottle converted to $52.40US. Good deal considering it is a bespoke perfume.

WOW! I'm so happy that I found this option through Fragrantica. I've been dreaming of my own perfume creation for years, now I finally bought my self-designed perfume. Of course, I'll tell you about my experiences when it arrives. :)

Very cool. I'm in the US; I've been looking for a site like this that would provide an easier way to do this than Garden Botanika. The only problem is that I couldn't find a couple of my favorite scents - for instance: gardenia, lilac and vetiver. Despite that, I've just placed my own order - not like there aren't plenty of other options! The price is right, the options are good, and the international shipping rate is very fair. It ended up being less than $60US Can't wait to get my new smelly!!! ;-)

I just ordered an exotic one!
Loads of tonka bean, strawberries, coconut and amber amongst other notes.
This is so easy; thank you so much for sharing.
This is a great idea. If you know which notes you like, it's a piece of cake.
(Can be taken literally, if you go gourmand!)
I promise to share "my" fragrance when it arrives.

I really like the idea and concept of making your own fragrance. I think it`s great, cause they make it simple and affordable. I do believe that they`ll add new essential oils into the fragrance concept, but I`m very satisfied with this offer, as well. The team that owns and works in this company is young, creative, with a good vision and fresh ideas, so they will read all your comments and I'm sure they'll expand the offer of essentials soon.

I asked some of my friends if they liked my fragrance concept, what they thought about it and if they would notice it in a perfumery, and most of the answers were positive.

The fragrance is not trendy at all, it does not resemble any perfume I know or have. I just love it!:))
