Anne McClain loves spaces. She believes all spaces can offer something new at any time. She prefers calm outdoor spaces, preferably “woody or green, instead of sweet or floral” ones that can feel overpowering. In 2009, after extensive study of natural perfumery and aromatherapy, and moving to Grasse for a more intensive study of the history, techniques, and practices of modern perfumery, she started MCMC Fragrances.
Now based in Brooklyn, all fragrances are carefully crafted in small batches and bottled by hand in Anne’s studio. Each fragrance Anne creates is “based on a particular story and these stories are based on memories of my life. They are, in a way, universal stories of falling in love, a particular place, or a friend who meant a certain way to you…I just want people to take them and make them their own.”
MCMC Fragrances is also interested in scents not just for the body but for her environment. “Before I got into making my own perfume, I was more into ambient smells and I would buy perfume that I liked—usually woody scents—and spray them in my room,” she said. “I was not a perfume wearer."
The Humanity Fragrance, First Edition: “The idea was to create a perfume that was inspired by, and could evoke, a sense of compassion,” she said, explaining that she researched the scent while volunteering at a daycare center in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico.
Dude No. 1: A couple of years ago, Anne was playing around in the lab, trying to come up with a way to trick her dude into wearing a scent. Traditional spray fragrances weren’t his thing, so she put it in a fat roll-on applicator with a base of organic jojoba and hemp seed oils, and created a beard oil. Yes, an all-natural oil-based fragrance to roll on the beard, moisturizing the hair and skin while lightly scenting his face. Her dude passed it on to his friends, his friends requested more, and Dude No. 1 Beard Oil was born. Fresh, spicy, and woody, this fragrance is the new classic manly scent that will make you want to get close. With Virginia cedarwood, green coriander and pink peppercorn. Phenomenal!

Maine is inspired by a day spent on the island of North Haven off the coast of Maine, falling in love. Bulgarian rose absolute, local clary sage, wild Somalian myrhh and French seaweed absolute convey the fresh scents of sea, air, sun, pine, and the discovery of a single perfect beach plum rose. Dries down into the musky scent of sensual skin coupled with sun-dried grass.

Maui is inspired by the Hawaiian island. “I never imagined that in this beautiful tropical land, ancient traditions would mingle with modern surf culture, creating a fun and sacred beachside atmosphere," Anne says. With top notes of young ginger and star anise and a heart of frangipani, tuberose, and green bamboo all wrapped in a light salty breeze, Maui is the essence of freedom with a laid-back vibe. (You can also check out Anne's beautiful photos inspired by Maine and Maui on her website. Brilliant idea—double inspiration!)

The Love perfume has this spinning high pitch that invites you to a unique experience. We understand where this perfume comes from: “The first time I fell in love, it was all fireworks and sparks and a rush of crazy dancing. ” Intense and spicy top notes of Japanese yuzu citrus, French sweet basil and Chinese magnolia oil grow into the burning intensity of ancient templewood and gunpowder. The scent lasts forever, just like true love. Our favourite!
The fragrance is full of harmony, peace and positivity! “As a small company, our footprint is very small, and we are dedicated to being an environmentally safe and sustainable company. We do not use endangered plant species, and we source wild and organic ingredients whenever possible. Our outer packaging is made from post-consumer recycled paper, and recently won a Sustainability Award at the 33rd Annual Packaging of the Year show,” as Anne states on her website.
Because MCMC fragrances contain volatile natural ingredients, store them in a cool, dim place, away from direct sunlight and heat. Citrus and floral oils are particularly sensitive to light and heat.
