On the Perfumes page choose the year 2012 (from 2012 to 2012) and play with the buttons: Female, Male, Shared, Industry, etc. For niche perfumery please choose FRAGRANCES in the Industry list. You can find these and many more interesting results than we published here in the article.

The Vagabond Prince
is very thankful to the Fragrantica community for the high rating Enchanted Forest has earned in the Shared category, according to your votes. We decided we will not participate in the rankings due to the fact that Enchanted Forest was launched at the very end of 2012.

We hope its high rank will be proven by time and that we'll have the distinction of being honored by Fragrantica readers next time.

I agree with tasmatic. It's great that natural fragrances have their own category. I believe this category is on the rise and I'd like to see more natural brands being registered on Fragrantica (many are missing) and more articles and interviews about it, as well.

It would be great if members could register a brand or add a fragrance that is missing on Fragrantica. If administrators feel that this would result in abuse, then the newly added item/brand could be "awaiting moderation" until it is accepted by Fragrantica staff. How about that? :) This would be great for people who come here to find out about new and/or rare brands.

Some natural brands missing from Fragrantica: Sharini (amaaaazing scents), Cattier, Parfums Sama, and Glam Hours.

I would also like to see essential oils in some kind of category and a possibility to review them.

I'm so greedy! :))

I'm really glad that Fragrantica has their own category for best natural fragrances. This is great for those who are only interested in those! It would be even better, if the category was split into women's, men's, and shared, just like the other categories.

To be honest when I have smelled first La vie este Belle I was not that drawn on it, I would put it more on the side of "esy to sell". And Lady Gaga`s perfume is quite a new commer on the perfume market. I would give it a go only one not twice.

Lady Gaga might be entertaining in the fashion and music department, but that black ink juice won't even cut it for my fountain pen!! It's a total and utter flop in my book.

Beckham is a joke as well (not just for his poor diction and lacking IQ). If given, I'd use it to flush the loo.

Amouage, Frederic Malle, CHANEL, Guerlain and DIOR make the best perfumes today in this world. END OF!

How on earth is Gaga's Fame "most loved???" Check out the huge "dislike" option, it outweighs the like and love buttons like crazy!

What a great mix! I wear La Vie Est Belle ALL the time and I rather like Gaga's Fame. (Don't forget to send positive vibes for her upcoming surgeries...) Roberto Cavalli has disappeared from Ulta and Sephora...keeping fingers crossed it stays with us for awhile. Coco Mlle is one of the most beautiful fragrances any of us will smell in our lifetimes. Even if it's not for you to wear, the composition is one of the "greats" that will be a legend for generations to come. Can you believe I have yet to sniff Coco Noir? It's embarrassing, really. Frankly, I don't shop at Nordstrom all that often, and I've forgotten to try Noir whenever I'm in the mall (I keep getting distracted at Barney's fragrance department). I have yet to see Coco Noir at Ulta, (which is in my neighborhood, a minute away), but my Ulta has all the other mainline Chanels. Thank you, Fragrantica, for the fun statistics! I just love visiting here.

I am glad to see Gaga on charts... Come on, people! She worked really hard for it! She at least did the work. Many celeb just let other people do it for them, she did it all...

I'm surprised by Fame, both because of the negative reviews and because my own test sniff was disappointing. Like its creator, it appears Fame is a polarizing fragrance!
It's perfectly clear why La Vie Est Belle and Coco Noir are winners, though the latter did not play nicely with my skin chemistry.
Thank you for this poll, Fragrantica!

Apart from a very few deserving ones, I must say I'm both totally surprised, as well as NOT at all surprised, by the majority sad poor top choices. (However that dichotomy is possible !?)

AND, real sorry - Tho I loath to sound like a grumpy 'fume-snob' ... BUT ...

(WTF !??) -> How in hell Gaga's embarrassingly sad excuse for a perfume ever get on any 'bests of' list, is thoroughly beyond me. (Sorry but this IS just fact, unfortunately !) - Just goes to show that 'media-frenzy & celeb-obsession' obviously DOES trump quality and/or taste. ... Instead, apart from the impressive advertising, I'd easily rate FAME probably the poorest & most disappointing 'chlebuscent' released to date. ... (I imagine we have the 'little monsters' to blame for this one.)

And as for the overabundance of generic 'citric-woody-aromatic' types in the 'winning' choices, it's rather unfortunate if not exactly a surprise. - I suppose when it boils down to a 'majority vote rule', it's only to be expected that generic choices would win out overall. It is after all exactly the reason why the market is littered with the bloody stuff.

To be honest I rather hoped (if not exactly expected) far more inspired & better choices to be reaching the top by now. - Especially seeing as we're far more educated about frags nowadays online. (Or at least, SHOULD be !)

Pleasant surprise - I am wearing La Vie est Belle and loving it. Have on my "next to buy list" Coco Madamoiselle so am "on trend". Don't envy you collecting all the stats and keeping everyone happy! Keep up the good work - love the site - check it every day - it's good the know what is out there and read everyone's comments.
Cheers, Alexandrarae

Thanks for this list.

However, I am curious. How did Instinct Ice by Beckham get on to this list when it was released in 2010? If my mind serves me right, the last time I saw this fragrance in stores was for six months in early 2010.

Coco Mademoiselle is not surprisingly the most loved female fragrance, but Lady Gaga's Fame and Chanel's Coco Noir was a bit of a shock. Perhaps media advertising does have a big effect on people after all.

Pleased to see Rihanna Rebelle. It's one of the few quality great celebrity perfumes out there, and deserves to be spotlighted!

Also not surprised about Spicebomb. It's amazing! I'm dying to buy it but it isn't stocked in my town at the moment.

Dear Jennifer as you can notice our website is trying to be more 'analog' then 'digital'. Fragrances are also something we more feel then measure. Numbers are also useful but we decided not to show them because it overwhelms interface with too much data. We will reconsider this and maybe in some place give also raw data about user votes.

;o) under 25 and over 25 are two groups of our readers. Every member while registering is asked about his/her age group, so afterwards we can see what younger and older audiences prefer.

La Nuit de l`Homme by the Yves Saint Laurent house will always be on my top shelf of fragrances to have for my entire life-time. Yes, I said it. This fragrance is just an incubator of sophistication that, when applied, attracts people to you. Appealing scents/fragrances are great conversation starters and this particular juice will have folks jabbering just to get to know you.

Alrighty then! I wasn't criticizing. I've been tutoring college-level statistics for several years now - and, well, you know how statisticians can be - if I can't see raw data - I want to know how someone arrived at the figures they did! Stats can be manipulated many different ways and many people don't understand "numerical weighting" and other factors which I see you took into account.

Thank you for explaining how you used the data to arrive at the conclusions you did. For further suggestion to this marvelous site, why not list the actual numbers (or percentages) of loves, likes, and dislikes, as charts can be deceiving. I also wonder about the under 25 and over 25 counter. Do you mean the person voting is in a certain age range or do you mean the fragrance is suitable for a particular age group?

Again, thank you for your explanations. I love a good mathematical debate!

Hi,

As you can see when Fragrantica rank by popularity we take in account all love, like and dislike votes. Since love is definitely having more weight then like it's contribution to popularity is bigger. In the case of Lady Gaga there is over 1200 votes divided in three groups about 400 each... or if we take a look at graphs it looks like 350 love, 400 like and 450 dislike. If we calculate it all together we can estimate that Fame could have something like '500 positive points' while La Vie Est Belle Lancome with 1100 votes and much less negative votes or even Roberto Cavalli with less then 700 votes but most of them positive outranked Fame in global ranking.

@jennifer
The volume of votes (Likes and Loves) for Lady Gaga is much greater than votes for Rihanna and Taylor Swift altogether. Lady Gaga is obvious favorite, in spite of all dislikes.

La Vie est Belle has less votes, but the number of Dislikes are smaller, so it has won the first place as the best women's fragrance. Lady Gaga is the third best for All women's fragrances and the best in Celeb fragrances.

I'm a little confused by the statistical matrix you used to describe most loved perfumes of the year. According to your findings, Lady Gaga's Fame was third best, yet if I go to the page for Fame, the Dislike category outnumbers both Love and Like categories (although I don't know the actual number of Love, like or dislike) so there is no way to determine the actual percentages. However, having that many dislikes may be an indication that Fame may not be one of the most liked perfumes of 2012. Did a lot of people try the perfume? Most likely, but that doesn't mean that it was liked or even good. I also noticed that there were more overall votes for Fame than La Vie est Belle, althought LVEB did receive proportionally more positive votes than Fame - furthermore, Roberto Cavalli had fewer votes overall than both Fame and LVEB and was ranked 2nd.

Were the releases of 2012 rank ordered by number of votes overall and then re-ranked by proportion of pos vs. neg. votes? Help me out please.
