Oliver & Co.'s Two New Perfumes and Giveaway

by: John Biebel

The independent perfumer from Madrid, Spain, Oliver Valverde has created two new perfumes as part of his Illustrated Series for his perfume house Oliver & Co.  He debuted them at Pitti Fragranze this year, and our writer Sandra Raicevic Petrovic first introduced us to his new work from the conference. Fragrantica readers are in for a treat this holiday, as Oliver & Co. has offered to give away 30 free samples of his new work. He is also offering a special discount at his online store, detailed at the bottom of this article.

The fragrances, Ambergreen and Vaninger, couldn’t be more intriguingly different from each other, and yet they share some key ideas. They are both explorations of opposites, of spectral elements melding together. Both contain aspects of amber, and so have a certain warm, resonant quality that feels like an embrace. I’ve spoken with Oliver about his work before, and it was great to connect with him over Skype again recently to talk about these new perfumes and what’s been happening for Oliver & Co. over the last year.

Oliver and Co. 16 ml Travel Size Perfume Edition

Ambergreen

John Biebel: I’d like to talk about your two new perfumes. What I do like is that they’re quite different from each other, even though they both have amber aspects. I’ve sprayed one on each arm. With the perfume Vaninger, it’s very warm, very much like home-smells, and Ambergreen is very beautiful, a lot of the green aspects are unusual.

Oliver Valverde: Of the two, Vaninger was the first, and then Ambergreen. Ambergreen… the idea is that I wanted to create something with green ingredients, like basil, green pepper, shiso leaves, all this kind of green but transforming it into something that is super long lasting, so not so much “fresh”, but at the same time intense. I experimented with a few molecules like ambergris (with ambroxan), also with ambrocenide, and okoumal (which is a very strong molecule). I didn’t have the name of the fragrance, but there was a moment when I liked the dimension I was giving to the fragrance, and I realized that there was a lot of amber in it - both amber and ambergris with ambroxan, and then I knew “OK, this is ‘Ambergreen’.” There is a lot of amber in the formula, but it is not obvious… for me, it’s like this - imagine that there is an explosion of green notes, and that they are emerging from amber rocks - emerging like fireworks…

JOHN: Like a propelling agent, or gunpowder?

OLIVER: Yes, like that. The feeling that I wanted to create - You don’t realize it’s amber inside. if you smell it, it doesn’t smell too ambery. It’s super green, but you don’t realize it’s the amber smell we know from other fragrances; like we associate with that orange color or brown color. Here it’s totally transparent, it’s a new direction with green as a color. It was an early experiment, and the experiment gave me the name.

JOHN: I like the idea of using green and to extend it long into the perfume. I sprayed this when I first woke up and it feels like its still on a top-note level…

OLIVER: Yes - It was so difficult, this part, and it wasn’t done intentionally. I put all my favorite green smells in there like pepper and basil (there’s a lot of basil in there), and then some small molecules, but very small amounts to recreate the smell of fresh cut grass, like stemone, just a small touch. But some of these smells are super strong, but don’t last too long. This created a core of green that doesn’t go away that fits very well with the amber. The key molecule for this is ambrocenide. This is a very strong molecule! According to a lot of the feedback, Ambergreen is the longest lasting fragrance of my collection.

Ambergreen Perfume Oliver& Co. Perfumes

Ambergreen is an unexpected green perfume that surprises with numerous twists and turns. In what is characteristic for Oliver & Co.’s scents, it is a dense and velvety fragrance, with vegetative greenery, the note of green pepper being the most prominent and joyful. The perfume is fortified with variations on amber, though they register only slightly to the nose. It plays like a slow, sensuous vapor on the skin and has enormous longevity. It pulls in other qualities like saltiness, fresh herbs and grass, and a scent of green wood (or unseasoned wood, like fresh cut logs). It carves out its own unique addition to the small but growing realm of green perfumes.

Vaninger

JOHN: I’d like to ask you about Vaninger, and how you came to this smell Again, it’s a very comforting, warm smell - what was your idea behind it?

OLIVER: It’s very hypnotic, I think. With the heliotrope added, it’s very addictive. The fusion of the opposites, the personality of the ingredients - It was clear that I wanted to create something that combined vanilla (which is very sweet) and ginger (which is very sharp and very fresh, citrus and sometimes metallic) and something that was a fusion of these. I wanted the contrast of these which was not obvious - as if these two ingredients were merging into each other, like two fluids.

JOHN: Like two fluids mixing together...

Vaninger illustration

OLIVER: Like they are fighting to be in the first position, but they never reach - that was my idea when I was in the lab. I used vanilla absolute, which is extremely expensive. I put in a high dose. And then I put in the ginger. Then I added more ingredients, the second highest ingredients that add to this idea of coziness are hedione and heliotrope. Hedione here maybe doesn’t make sense, because it’s a floral, but I always want to create the unexpected. Hedione brings a sense of air… this  airy feeling, and with heliotrope it's the same, it is like a link between vanilla and ginger. These four ingredients are probably the most recognized in the formula. This comfort and cozy feeling, like you said, “Something that embraces you" at the beginning, but is not extremely sweet. There is some air and something spicy, but it doesn’t have that “down to earth” feeling that you’d find in other vanilla fragrances. There is also tolu balsam in there, which is very nice and I put a little bit of turmeric in there, a little spicy. that’s why it’s so orange.

JOHN: Yes, I noticed the color, it’s really beautiful. There are a lot of perfumes with vanilla that could be more of the standard comforting-vanilla perfumes out there, but this has a real “tang” to it, a bit acidic, like lemon or mango. This is nice because vanilla is usually just smooth.

Vaninger perfume, Oliver & Co.

OLIVER: Most of the vanilla fragrances on the market don’t contain the vanilla absolute, but they use vanillin - it’s not bad, but it’s synthetic. If you create a vanilla fragrance, you need to use something more rich. That’s why I used the absolute. The smell of the absolute, it’s the smell of vanilla, but at the same time, it’s not vanilla - it’s a little bit dry, a little bit tobacco, a little bit fruity, woody - It’s not obvious - it’s not the sweetness you expect from vanilla.

Vaninger pushes our perceptions of vanilla into new realms by pairing it with the sharp, peppery notes of ginger. The two make for a remarkable pair, as both friends and enemies, but in either case creating fascinating music as they struggle or coexist. It is piquant and sweet, and amber, as in Ambergreen, plays a vital role in giving the fragrance body and longevity. There are some light bits of citrus and a creamy/sharp heliotrope that extends this metaphor of opposites, but it is fascinating for the skin, at turns sweet and then spicy and slightly sour. This modern interpretation of vanilla is edgy but still has at its heart a feeling of comfort.

On Notes and Perception, and Future Plans:

JOHN: We’ve recently done a few articles about spices in perfume, and there was some discussion about a note that we know is in a perfume (like cinnamon), or the perception of a note in a perfume, even if it’s not readily there, or recognizable.

M.O.U.S.S.E II Perfume, Oliver & Co.

OLIVER: As a perfumer, you can worry that a scent [like cinnamon]: “will this smell like cake?”, but it’s very different when you use the natural elements. It happens with M.O.U.S.S.E II, one of my fragrances that contains mint, it’s a pure mint. At the beginning I was afraid to add a bit more mint than I should, so that it might smell like candies or chewing gum. It was special distillation that did smell like mint but much richer. In fact, some people say they don’t recognize the minty part of the fragrance. I like to play with the notes like this.

JOHN: This is similar to your approach with the Nebula series: Those perfumes seem so much “more than the sum of their parts” - it was extremely difficult to pull any notes out of them, like whole new smells, and that seemed very intentional on your part.

OLIVER: Exactly. I wanted to recreate the smell inspired by the nebula photographs… There was one day I was looking at the nebula photographs, the first one, and in just a few seconds I had the idea to connect the color and the image within this photograph into this fragrance. I wanted to make what this image would smell like, and the idea was to create something absolutely crazy but wearable. This year, there is another nebula coming out, and possibly another coming out in 2018. What is interesting about the Nebula Series is that it’s more difficult to sell, more difficult to understand, but I did that totally intentionally… It’s for curious people, who like to explore different or unusual stuff. The formulas; the feeling is more artificial, more techno, more futuristic, but the focus is on naturals. But people tell me “It doesn’t smell like naturals”, but they’re almost 60-70 percent natural.

JOHN: The first formula was very complex, wasn’t it?

Nebula 2 Perfume, Oliver and Co. PerfumesNebula 2 Perfume by Oliver Valverde

OLIVER: Yes, it was about 50 trials (when creating it). It was complex because I wanted to create something that didn’t have levels, linear - which is interesting; you know I don’t work with pyramids - it was interesting, the Fragrantica article about the pyramid; even many mass market perfumes don’t have a pyramid.

JOHN: Yes, I think the problem with the pyramid is that it's more of a circle - where you can start anywhere and then jump around. I wonder sometimes if that’s a better visualization of the data?

OLIVER: Yes, yes - I like this, it’s a nice idea, a circle, if you spray and it surrounds you with all the notes.

JOHN: I’d like to talk about what’s coming up for Oliver & Co.? Ambergreen and Vaninger were added to the Illustrated Series, and you’ve said that you’ll be adding to the Nebula series, are there more in the near future?

OLIVER: I’m developing a new collection, new series, new packaging and new concept, new bottle, still part of Oliver & Co. I’m working on it already, it will be about three flowers, a collection of flowers, but in a totally different way. The packaging is very challenging, but we’re planning to launch in Pitti next year, and then probably more to come in the next year, for Oliver & Co. if something doesn’t fit into the Illustrated Series or Nebula, I need to explore where I need to fit a formula, so I need to create another series for this. This is the case with the new series.

JOHN: This is all very exciting news!

Oliver ValverdeOliver Valverde of Oliver & Co. Perfumes

OLIVER: I am happy, the brand is now six years old, and it’s my business, and I’m quite happy with how things are evolving.

I am usually drawn into fragrances I thought very vanilla since they embrace me with sweetness of delice. I am not an expert in notes so after reading the explanation of vanilla scented fragrance in this article I come to know that maybe all this time I had never actually smelled the true scent of vanilla. I would love to know how a true vanilla fragrance should smells like. I think the idea of mixing vanilla with ginger is interesting, sounds like perfect for cold winter days but maybe it would also suit a warm tropical night in Indonesia pretty well. Who knows.

Green notes are my favorites. I've always felt comforted when smelling green fragrances. The reason why is because of my long history with Chanel No. 19.

I strongly believe our brains start recording everything from our senses the moment we are born. My pediatrician was present at the time I was born, and her signature fragrance was Chanel No. 19 as it was quite popular back in the 1970s when I was born. Thus, I believe the very first perfume I ever smelled was Chanel No. 19, a beautiful green fragrance that is worn to this day by both my mother and my wife.

Oh wow...tough choice. Somehow, by the description I think Vaninger with the warm vanilla and exciting ginger is ”pro-winter” and it will be perfect for the upcoming holidays, whereas Ambergreen is ”pro-spring/summer” as for the fresh notes, but the amber in it might balance it into an “all season“ scent. Just my perspective...

it is hard to choose a favorite fragrance family. Vanilla, amber or green? Depends on mood, weather, situation. More important is the elegance and complexity, the surprise and unexpectedness. The intriguing way some frangrances unfold as they reveal themselves on your skin. I would be happy to experience any of this collection but to choose just one it would be the Ambergreen. Thank you for the give away!

Amber has always been my favorite note. It is hard to define with precision, if you will, as this scent is often a mixture of rare oils and woods and secret ingredients! :>) Some descriptions of amber just sound deep and exotic and others include the names of woods from scare trees such as sandalwood and resins of myrrh and frankincense along with aged patchouli and benzoins and and and. I love amber!! Always sooo mysterious and intriguing. I would love to know how the addition of "green" melds with my favorite.
Oliver Valverde sounds like a very interesting perfumer who I would like to know more about and his fragrances. Learning something new every day! Thank you for offering these very interesting scents as a giveaway, Fragrantica. Happy Holidays to all.

It's a difficult choice because I love vanilla, amber, AND green notes...but my favorite is probably vanilla (especially in combination with ginger, like in Tom Ford Noir Pour Femme). Green, green, green, all the way. Vanilla can be very beautiful, but I am rarely in the mood for a gourmand perfume, in a warm climate, it can become cloying very quickly. Green perfumes are what I need to feel balanced and calm, thanks to the associations that they hold for me.

I love Vanilla notes. And Vaninger sounds wonderful. Vanilla comes in so many forms. Most of the time, it's a note that helps soften the edges of a fragrance. Other times, when it's the prominent, main note, I like it when more authentic/woody, as opposed to being foody. It's just a great note that adds some depth or character to most perfumes.

I love amber and green. Vanilla is nice as well but it only works for me combined with some darker and heavier notes, otherwise it's too feminine.
Amber gives great depth and a bit of mistery and masculinity, it's a great base for any scent for men.
Green notes are great because they give freshness, and also a bit of masculinity in my opinion - green neutralises sweet, fruity and floral notes and turns the female fragrance into something unisex.
So ambergreen sounds like amazing combination!

I am trying for the giveaway for the first time.
I don't like vanilla! It is everywhere in fragrances so I feel I must be missing something?
Do I want to smell like ice cream? Or cake? If I got the giveaway I could find out!

I get the impression vanilla is a cheap ingredient so I am interested in how the creator lifts this to level of sohpisticated signature scent

Thank you for the giveaway oportunity :) I'm so intrigued by Ambergreen. I imagine a petrichor kind of smell, or the smell of wet forest. There's a tree in my garden that, when I water it, emits the most lovely fresh, yet deep, warm and resinous smell, which could possibly be my favourite smell in the world. I imagine Ambergreen to be the cousin of this smell.

I am so intrigued by Vaninger! I fought my attraction to vanilla notes for a very long time, secretly afraid to be too unoriginally "girly" and "typical", and when I finally caved and tried a spicy vanilleaperfume, I had to realize that I was being completely unreasonable. Vanilla is MY scent, it speaks to me and it just works on me; but I do look for some unexpected notes that combine to it.
So this fragrance makes me very curious, I'd love to try it!

I've never been keen on green notes and I guess I'm still seeking for my own "green" perfume as in most of their cases I get terrible headaches. Instead, I'm easily dissolved in warm hugs of tobacco, Amber, musk, oud or leather. I feel safe and confident, constantly captivated by the scent I'm wearing.

Though I choose vanilla for its playful character and some unexpected results you can get while experimenting with it.

Thank you!! Oliver & Co is one of my favorite niche perfumers. I have managed to add Resina and Gincense to my wardrobe, and I have been trying to make up my mind between Mousse and Mousse II for the past year. I would also dearly love to have Nebula 1 and Nebula 2.

Regarding Vaninger, **I'm all for any perfume that takes a different twist on vanilla** - which, lately, many other perfumers have made into a boring and predictable cliche. But ginger and tolu balsam, too??? I am **so there**!

The piquant variations of amber in Ambergreen sound amazingly creative... a like an ensalada extraordinaire, as well as forward thinking; a perfectly unique blend of components to carry a discerning nose through Spring and well into Autumn.

I'm sure I would be ecstatic with either creation... certainly for their own merits, but especially for the fact that they come from such an esteemed nose and House - Oliver Valverde ~ Oliver & Co.

I love amber in fragrances. It seems to add an air of mystery that I can't explain. Green scents are clean and fresh, like a walk in a pine forest or what I smell just before it rains. Vanilla, on it's own smells like I've been baking. It needs other fragrances to tone it down before it is wearable. My favorite fragrances are formulations that are the perfect combinations.
