Redesigned L'Air du Temps Flacon

Philippe Starck's first fragrant design venture is redesign of the legendary flacon for Nina Ricci L`Air du Temps. The flacon was originally designed after World War two, in 1948, by creators Rene Lalique and Robert Ricci.

On the occasion of redesign of the bottle, Philippe Starck said the following: “There is no difference in making a rocket, a hotel, a motorbike, a museum or a fragrance because the actual object is of no importance. What’s important is how it’s going to affect the person who lives in that place or with that object. So for me, a fragrance, and above all, L’Air du Temps by Nina Ricci, is a matter of vibration. It’s getting the air to vibrate in a way that suddenly moves us.”

Design of L`Air du Temps symbolizes love, peace and freedom. Collaboration between Nina Ricci and Starck pushed these symbols to the first plan again. Kissing pigeons are united to create the whole flacon. Instead of redesigning the characteristic cap, the designer gives new structure and form of a kiss to the whole bottle. The flacon accentuates modern tendencies and is easier for its new owner to carry it around.

It will be available as 45ml edt spray from October 2010, with a silver cap. Price of this limited edition is 69 EUR ($88,9).

Totally agree with Alexandrarae. Why would they change the classic flacon for this? The new bottle is not all that bad, it's just too modern for such classical fragrance. It reminds me of the bottle for Donna Karan New York. I think they should definitely go back to the old bottle. Is this an attempt to reach younger "audiences"? Perhaps... BTW, Sandra (editor): "The flacon was originally designed after World War two, in 1984, by creators Rene Lalique and Robert Ricci.". I believe you mean 1948!

I´m trying to find doves but all I see is a shark fin and something that could be a brass knuckle. Ugly as hell.

Don't panic! It's just a limited edition. I guess some collectors would like to have it. I'll keep the old one :)

The Twilight Saga inspired kiss? They got them to trade white doves for white fangs.

Nooooooo! How could they possibly think that this monstrosity is better than the original! Had enough they dropped the original "Nina" - now they change another Classic beautiful bottle for this modern weird thing! Can't believe it!!!

Never liked the fragrance but the original flanker (and the juice) pretty much captured l'air de leur temps. It's not that hard to tell it still features the two kissing doves, but honestly, my first impression was of Rorchach's inkblots or even more of a wax cast they use to tell a persons' destiny or to undo some kind of curse. Pretty voodoo creepy!

I see a profile of a creature from a 1930's movie who is about to invade the planet! If this is modern art, then you can keep it. Much prefer the traditional bottle. Phillpe Starck did not do his research into what a bottle means to perfume lovers. Its about beauty, visualuality and touch. This bottle portrays no symbol of beauty what so ever.

What?! Just what is it? Batman with a metallic wing? And what's that little hole on side? Why tinker with a beautiful, vintage design and make a sham out of it? I'm truly shocked and revolted!

I agree with Sarahbelle, shame on those who commissioned Philippe Starck, his design is a sad example of destroying yet another old time beauty, refined and glamourous piece in favour of a tacky modern one.

RAAAHHH!!!WHAT?!!!

Why redesign something already gorgeous?
Huge mistake....Looks like a shark fin on top of a collector's knife! I see the shape of two doves, not that you mention it...But the two doves have lost their definition and have faded into an indistinguishable shape.

I would find the design interesting if it were for something new, but leave the lovely designs alone. I am with SedNonSatiata-I have never smelled the original, but I don't care for the reformulation.

The old design was way more beautifully crafted ..... Don't like it at all and don't see why did they do such a thing ? It's like fragrance reformulation which always results in ugly output....

A cross between a Toucan and a platypus?

Honestly it looks like someone left glass or plastic on the heat too long, it warped, then they said said oh heck, what do we do now? Oh I know! Let's call it ART!!

You can claim "art" all you want but if you alienate your target audience it defeats the purpose.

Imo, I don't believe it is a good representation of the perfume and also don't think that type of bottle will appeal to the people who like the scent.

I can still see the two doves, but to me the elegant and stately appeal is gone; this perfume bottle can double as a throwing knife. sigh.

This is like a Rorschach test, an inkblot picture turned into a bottle. Pretty cool and ingenious on a rather psychological level. I think ultimately it's about what you see in it.

I see a bird. Anyone else? :)

Thank god its just a limited edition flacon - my heart would sink if the bottle is to be redesigned! Not that I love the bottle or anything, its just really sentimental to me as it was my mom's staple :3

edit: I am interested in knowing how the bottle is supposed to stand ?

Ick.

The new flacon no longer hints of the romantic, feminine fragrance inside. It is an insult to the original creators of both the fragrance and the Lalique bottle.

What were they thinking???

Hmmm. All those sharp edges don't say "kiss" to me.

I wish they had worked on the juice instead of the flacon: restoring the sad reformulation to its former , radiant glory would be like a warm hug and kiss to perfume lovers.
