Enigmatic Elegance

Nasreen Rehmat knows/nose what she is doing, after over 27 years in the business.  It’s been my pleasure to order from her in the past—so when I sniffed Nasreen by M. Micallef recently, I knew that eventually I would want to budget for a bottle. I did. And here we are.

There are myriad ouds available, abundant rose-ouds as well. One could become giddy from the multitude of spicy-woody-rosy-oud-y scents at our outstretched fingertips. If Nasreen were simply one more, I wouldn’t be sitting here writing about it.

This bespoke created for Nasreen’s [Naz to her friends] Parfumerie Nasreen is enigmatic elegance of the richly embroidered variety, and generous beyond measure. It is all the perfumes of Arabia vibrating in a 100 ml flacon; how they allowed themselves to be contained in such a small space is a mystery to me.

[The name Nasreen has several meanings. In Urdu and Arabic it can mean any of the following: jonquil, narcissus, wild rose, Jericho rose. In Farsi, it means "wild rose."]

Notes for Nasreen

Head: rose, saffron
Heart: honey, incense, gingerbread
Foundation: patchouli, Suyufi oud, white musk

Nasreen, above all, is a magnanimous perfume. Nothing exquisite is stinted. Like an elaborate calligraphic Islamic painting, there are worlds within worlds: the profundity of darkest rose, metallic saffron shimmering side-by-side with exotic baking spices, the unctuous animalic sweetness of honey underscored by echoes of Demeter’s earthly devotion [loamy patchouli and precious oud]. White musk softens the composition; Nasreen is genteel, but intense. It smells warm and fierce.

[Prior to experiencing this perfume I, like many readers, had smelled so many blends and oils and perfumes that I felt saturated by them all.]

Nasreen is like no other.  As with reverie, one can become lost in its intricacy and seduction.

I walked intp Purfumerie Nasreen in Seattle 16 years ago while I was there on a business trip. Nasreen asked me some questions and pronounced Amouage Gold Woman would be the fragrance for me. It has been my signature all these years.

Nasreen assured me I would like this scent since I love orientals. I bought it blind. At first I thought it was masculine compared to the sweet scent of Gold. I tried it layered over a vanilla body cream to girl it up. I spayed rose over it it accent the rose. Nasreen says this fragrance will haunt you. It did. I now appreciate it solo in all its intigracies. I love it. It is like nothing else out there.

Nasreen ships anywhere and is so generous with samples. I got about 10 with my order - ones she specially chose for me. She ships right away and I had my Nasreen fragrance three days after I ordered it. I have been so taken with it I have not even been tempted to try any of the samples. She is right. It haunts you. It is all I want to wear.
