Scents and Spirituality: Interview with Yosh Han

Perfumer Yosh Han, of the San Francisco-based fragrance line bearing her name, was on hand at the January 2012 Elements Showcase to promote her collection and highlight her newest scent, Sombre Negra.

The Yosh fragrances are imbued with beauty, warmth and spirituality—much like the perfumer herself, as you'll see in this interview. The first six scents that form the main collection, Evanescent, combine top-notch fragrance components and perfumery skills with numerology and Chakra principles. The Evanescent fragrances—Ginger Ciao, Sottile, White Flowers, Stargazer, Omniscent and U4eahh!—constitute a fragrance wardrobe and wrap the wearer in a warm and loving embrace as they go about their day.

The newest scent from Yosh, Sombre Negra, is the first scent in her new "M" series and represents a departure from the previous collection, both in scent and in mood. Using one of the cleverest presentation methods we saw at Elements—a perfume test strip that resembles a moustache when held under the nose—Sombre Negra takes us on a journey to the dark side.

Darker notes such as vetiver, patchouli and orris root are paired with spices including cumin, nutmeg and black peppercorn in this unisex fragrance. If the Evanescent collection was about sweetness and light, Sombre Negra ("Black Shadow") is the flip side, the intriguing shadowy world where things aren't always as they seem.

Thank you to Yosh for a great interview! She is such a wonderful combination of insightful business woman and artistic, spiritual creator of beautiful things! :-) U4eahh! was always my preferred Yosh scent, but Sombre Negra is fast becoming a new favorite. . . :-)
