"

"AGONIST creates pure fragrances inspired by the Nordic climate, by the melancholy and beauty of film, poetry and literature from Bergman, Boye and Garbo and other iconized characters from Swedish Culture."
—from the Agonist website

The Infidels is the second fragrance by Agonist, introduced in 2009. The limited edition consisted of two gigantic pieces, measuring 40cm in height and weighing 5 kilos each.

                                               Limited Edition of The Infidels

"We regard the unlimited edition as the children of these two mighty pieces." The unlimited version is also handcrafted at Kosta Boda, as were the previous compositions. The artist who is responsible for the creation of these beautiful bottles is Åsa Jungnelius.

        Unlimited Edition of The Infidels

Height: 14cm Width: 10cm Length: 9cm
You apply the fragrance with the steel pin.

FRAGRANCE  REVIEW
While the art-glass composition of the two bottles quite explicitly express the idea of passionate relationship between two lovers, the unlimited edition bottle symbolizes the same in a more implicit and "handy" way, more focused on its function as a perfume bottle. The smooth rounded lines of the bottle with the deep brown-red capsule inside caress your senses. You get a wonderful visual and tactile experience—and prepare for the perfume inside. The application of the fragrance with a stick is an extension of an almost forgotten and now exclusive pleasure of communication with a perfume through touching, looking and smelling, without hurry.

About the essence of the North: it might be very exotic now, because too often we seek the exotic in the opposite direction. There are not many flowers on the rocky lands of Scandinavia, and you meet every forest beauty with deep delight and gratitude. Myself, I enjoy in Northern landscapes no less than a lush Southern flora.

When I smell it, I am thinking of comfortless cold and cloudy weather, and a simple pleasure of feeling warm—with clothes or feelings. The overdosed notes of cumin and black currant come from the dramatic twilight of the composition, enhancing each other with the right nuance, like shadows in the night, making everything grander and smoother. They intrigue you with their dark animal quality, too sensual to be gourmand. Magnolia and lavender balance the number of resinous amber notes and keep them from being too sweet or involving.

I have been thinking about the words of Niclas Lydeen (Creative Director of Agonist Parfums): "The Infidels tells the story about the control and passion between lovers." Passion is ok, almost every fragrance tries to capture the idea of passionate love, but control? At last I found these words extremely accurate towards the composition of The Infidels, where every note possesses a great potential to lead the composition to its domain, but behaves very amicably to the rest, revealing the great art of harmony. Despite great doses of some ingredients and complexity of nuances, the composition is not crowded with notes, every ingredient feels quite free and comfortable, and reflects this feeling to the wearer.

The Northerners know how to appreciate warmth. Maybe that is one more reason for the warm composition of The Infidels. Anyway, it better reveals its beauty "in the melancholy" of colder days.

Why there are usually out of date contests advertised under the ''Contest'' bookmark on the top of the page is beyond me. Nearly every time I click on Contest - it takes me to an outdated contest page.
Could editors advise, what is the point of diverting members onto contests that already have been closed?????
If it wasn't bad enough, the info on the top of the contest site is misleading as it advises members that there is a contest here and now, so you click on it just to see that it closed weeks ago.

I am always more intrigued and affected when the bottle, perfume, and scent have a relationship to each other. It adds sight, touch, and form symbolism to the overall impression the user has with the scent. Engages more of the senses and memories associated. It's like personal bonding and creates a full experience with the act of decision to wear and the application thereof. Yes, great perfume is about enjoyment and enhancement, and about the experience evoked - regardless of whether it's sexy, refreshing, comforting, etc. I'd be interested not only to smell it and experience applying it, but to see the marketing materials used for it. :)

I added my vote despite winners having been listed already, just because I wanted to express that for me ideally the bottle should be impressive, beautiful, and equipped with a stopper. Then there should also be a travel edition in a safe miniformat for the handbag.

Ultimately, of course, it is the scent and not the bottle that matters. But, like all things gorgeous and feminine, the package is part of the fun. Tiffany knows this. So does Rene Caovilla and Hermes and Perrier Jouet. In the golden age of the perfume industry (early 20th century) they understood the drama in presentation. The designed box, bottle and fragrance as a combined experience. Whether romantic or whimsical or seductively mysterious, the box itself would begin the experience that the bottle would extrapolate and finally the scent would deliver the prize. So, yes, I think to dismiss the bottle is to miss out on part of the experience. But it does take an artist, and some of today's bottles (especially the celebrity scents) announce the ignorance and vulgarity of the business plan. Hopefully, not always the fragrance inside. But I am certainly turned off by a tasteless bottle no matter the perfume inside.

Smelling this perfume made me happy. That rarely ever happens: smelling perfumes makes you feel comfy, inquiet, aroused, intrigued, disgusted, etc. But all I got was happy.
Immidiately, a sense of warmth infused me: shelter against the cold. There was a woody snow wind blast, and a dark gray wool shawl. There were dark red berries in the midst of a white snow-covered sunset. Must be my Northern upbringing coming out--this scent captures the coldness of the North and warmth of all the fruits and woods as they lie covered by the insulating blanket of snow.
As it develops, this scent definitely reminds me of some long ago day. I almost smell and Irish lavender in there. There is so much natural mossyness. I am almost glad that I will never possess this perfume (due to the cost) because I will always remember this far-away longing.

Bottles may be a work of art unto themselves. That, in and of itself, is beautiful. It does not, however, tell me the beauty of the fragrance within. That, I must discover by opening the bottle and dabbing or spraying. Bottles may make a beautiful presentation, but one cannot stop there. That is similar to liking a person for their looks instead of their personality. It's always the substance within that's most important.

for me its like choosing a partner if he/she is hot in apprearance (which represent the bottle) it might influence me, i normally go with attitude or what's inside (which represent the scent) to choose what's right for me sound cliche but it do works for me.

I too love bottles but it's the perfume that makes my decision. I also prefer sprays because they are easier and in a way, more fun to put on although I voted that it doesn't matter because I didn't realize that it didn't affect my winning eligibility lol

First impression - the bottle's shape and color is always very important. Sometimes I buy a fragrance because I love the bottle and it is almost always that I really love the scent too.
Some of the bottles are real masterpieces and the designer of The Agonist's perfumes is a great artist.

The most important thing is the quality of the scent but if it's a good scent in an attractive bottle so much the better.

An attractive bottle is a plus but not a requirement.

I like to dab and to spray - i think dabbing or applying from a stopper can be more romantic but i do recognize that sprays are more convenient and moreover, you do not have to worry about them spilling.

The creative bottles definitely got my attention and now I'm wanting to try the scent. Blatantly sexual, but with symbolism in the second one that's almost subliminal as well.

However, it's the scent that tells the tale--it'll be interesting to see if it matches the symbolism of the bottles themselves.

If you ask me now will i buy a perfume if it had a bad looking bottle i probably would say that the bottle doesn't matter, what matters is inside it. But when it comes to buying for real the package is always the one who can make the last step for you to buy the perfume or not. Especially when you are unsure, which happens with me very often. I know it is not fare to judge based on the look only but i think this is a part of the perfume industry in general- it sells us a wish, a wonderful dream, an image of what we want to be, like the advertising woman on the poster next to the perfume. it's like to marry a person- the look is always important. After that you may really fall in love with the soul of your partner but in the beginning is always the appeal of the outer look combined with the quality of the soul. But it also depends on the gender- men love with the eyes, women love with the brain and the heart. So, in other words, it's complicated! Please, don't underestimate the bottle ;).

I must admitt that I am in love with perfume bottles as much as I am in love with perfumes themselves. For me, it is like love at first sight: you see someone you like, someone you find attractive, and you approach that person. Sometimes it works quite well, others not so much; but at least you gave them a chance. It is also basic marketing: when your product is in the store, on the shelves, your potential customer takes interest in in because of its apparance. If it does not have any substance behind the package, there will be no sale. But there will be no sale either if the presentation is not good.

I think subconsciously the bottle tells me about the type of perfume inside, even if this is not overt. Take YSL paris for example- couldn't be anything but roses, or YSL Nu- cold, dark, uncompromising which matches perfectly with the scent. The agonist line however don't speak to me at all...is there really any perfume in there???

The very first glance caused a question of what is this? Upon completion of the second half of that split second caused interest.

I am a lover of any kind of art and expression. Bravo for this very unique vision of these perfume bottles!

I am very anxious to find out all about what is inside. I hope the fragrance and what it delivers is as memorable as the bottle.

I could not imagine a life without my favorite perfums.

Perfume without a good bottle is like a beautiful person with one eye... so to speak.

I have to thank bottle design for getting me interested in perfume, period. I come from a family of industrial designers and I trained in sculpture, and it's just fascinating to see how quickly and unpredictably 20th century tastes have changed... we go from Mitsouko to Gucci Rush in a matter of decades. A bottleless experience is just not the same.

Plus, there's something sensual about holding an exquisite little work of art in your hand, feeling the glassy weight of it, about to spray its contents... which I'm sure is the aim of Agonist's crazy awesome bottles that wouldn't be out of place in a conceptual art show. Truly, as megannsmom said, the holy grail!

I can appreciate a bottle design as a work of art but it is hardly the same as experiencing the flood of emotions, memories & exploration of scent itself.

Although, I have been tempted to buy Juicy Couture Couture Couture just for the bottle so maybe I am still a marketing slave after all!

The bottle is never the reason for me to purchase; it's always the scent. However, some bottles are:

1. Fun to display (Jungle for men, Betsey Johnson, any Lolita Lempicka scent--but "L" in particular)

2. Well-matched for the scent they house (Venezia for women, Rive Gauche for Men, Vetiver Extreme, Crystal Noir, Madness, and Bulgari Black come to mind first)

3. Surprisingly elegant (With Love by Hilary Duff, Rochas Lui, Contradiction for Men)

Perfume bottles are often beautiful, sometimes strange, sometimes puzzling and sometimes breathtakingly ugly. Worst one recently: Van Cleef & Arpels l'Oriens. Massive gaudy doorknob thing balanced on a little cushion of a bottle-ridiculous!Beautiful bottles from Lolita Lempicka and classically elegant bottles from Badgley Mischka. Favourite bottle ever - Mitsouko. Perfect marriage of presentation and perfume!

Bottles are never a reason to buy (although they may seduce...), but they are sometimes a reason to keep a perfume, even when I've found that it does not agree with me. Three examples that leap immediately to mind are J'Adore, Insolence, and Rumeur. Gorgeous bottles, but I don't wear the juice!

Some masterpiece perfumes happily come in bottles which are truly beautiful to behold:
Arpege, Fracas, Mitsouko, L'Heure bleue, Bulgari pour femme, Deci dela, Rochas Femme,...

Some bottles are either very nice or lots of fun and contain juice that is entirely wearable, albeit not sublime:
Lancome Hypnose, Sonia Rykiel t-shirt frags, Bond no 9s, Gucci edp, Guerlain Aqua Allegorias, Trussard Skin, Marc Jacobs Essence, Rochas Tocade, Calvin Klein Truth and Contradiction, SJP Covet and Lovely...

Another category includes bottles which simply try too hard, and end by undermining themselves:
Guerlain Mahora, Organza Indecence, the Bulgari Omnia series...

Some ugly bottles are filled with delightful surprises: Il Bacio, Coriandre, Ivoire, Bal a Versailles...

And then there are the ugly bottles filled with equally ugly juice: (fill in the blank(s)...)!

I find the question about the bottle design interesting and decent. I can say if a perfume may fit my taste or not just looking to the bottle, before smelling it. The bottle need to fit symbolistically with the fragrance inside and is a tool for transmitting the message of the perfume. Even if I like the aroma, I don't buy a perfume if the bottle look cheap or lacking inspiration.

Aesthetically and practically I prefer perfume stored in an opaque bottle.
If the bottle is weighted at the base, so much the better.

Favorites are:
the black bottle of Arpege and
Trussardi in the white leather falcon. Agent Provacateur packaging is cute.
Bandit and Fracas in the square no nonsense bottle represent the contents well.
Kenzo Amour is intriguing in the curved coloured bottles.

The exception to my opaque rule is Shiseido Feminite du Bois in the sensuous purple falcon. How I regret the loss of that great scent.

Very interesting bottles! I would love to win a sample, I'm very intrigued! I can see where someone might think the design is lewd, but it's artistically creative and abstract and modern. Personally, I prefer more elegance to my bottles, so were I to buy, I'd surely go for the unlimited edition - the other limited editions, though creatively eye-pleasing, don't fit my design sensibilities (call me old school :)). It's quite fitting that these bottles come from a Nordic perfumer, from the land where IKEA reigns supreme.

People have been annointing themselves with scent for thousands of years, and the vessles in which the scents were stored were often regarded as precious objects themselves. We have gotten to far away from this idea in our modern times, and mass produced bottles seem to take someting special away from the experience of scenting ones-self. Parfum is an art form and it is quite fitting that it be stored within another art form; that of art glass. As a collector of both art glass objects as well as parfum, these stunning bottles and the scents they contain are a Holy Grail........Bravo, Agonist!

I like the bottle of their "unlimited" edition. I got little tied of the trend of brand-focused design, when every perfume comes in the same brand bottle: very practical and good for brand recognition, but faceless for the perfumes inside.

Organza, Tresor, Amarige, each of them you strongly associate with its bottle.

By the way in case with Agonist each perfume so far is recognizable as it is, and as a part of the Agonist brand.
