This Week in Fragrance: Basic Bitch, Tiffany's & Morning Sickness

Finally, someone has figured out how to make VHS relevant again. American avant garde perfumery Xyrena has just launched a new line titled XHS:

XHS packaging was achieved by utilizing original, retrofitted molds used decades ago by major film studios like Disney and Fox. Four new innovative fragrances were released in the XHS format including Basic Bitch, Pool Boy, Hellanut and Cinemaniac, and come artfully presented in a stunning black clamshell case disguised as a video cassette, complete with cover art inspired by the fragrance inside.

The names alone are compelling enough to sniff out let alone some of the notes used. For example, Cinemaniac includes notes of popcorn, pretzels, cola and licorice! What classic VHS title would you most want to see made into a perfume? (as seen on PRNewswire.com)

""Tiffany is among the world's most important houses of luxury, and fragrances are an important expression of the brand," said Frédéric Cumenal, chief executive officer of Tiffany & Co. "We are pleased to work with Coty, an industry leader in the prestige fragrance category, on the development of a more meaningful fragrance portfolio through this licensing agreement.""Tiffany's luxury heritage lends itself perfectly to Coty's prestige fragrance portfolio," said Bart Becht, chairman and interim chief executive officer, Coty. "We look forward to bringing Coty's unique expertise to Tiffany by establishing a strong fragrance business for the brand.""

We really haven't seen much from Tiffany in recent years; I wonder what this means for my beloved Tiffany for Men. What Tiffany products do you think would most inspire new fragrances? Just think of all the packaging possibilities!

Jennifer Viegas at News.discovery. com reveals that humans are not the only creature to make perfume:

"The bees from the genus Euglossa formulate their unique perfumes for reasons similar to ours: to attract mates, establish a signature identity, and smell good in a crowd. They do this by gathering a variety of carefully selected scents from their environment, and then douse their bodies with the perfume. The new research opens up the possibility of recreating perfumes, which humans could wear and that were formulated, not by trendy designers, but by male orchid bees. The downside might be that the human wearer could attract female bees eager to mate, but it’s also possible that such scents could be sexy and appealing to human suitors as well."

Fascinating? One can only wonder what this perfume might smell like and how long it will take until a company decides to emulate the aromachemical compounds.

Sarah Sloat reports for Inverse.com that researchers in England have figured out what makes humans, well, stink:

"On Wednesday the Journal of Chromatography A published a paper by researchers who have begun to the crack the case of our musk. Northumbria University scientists identified six volatile compounds in dirty clothes pre and post-wash — chemical compounds that are particularly, unpleasantly pungent. These six VOCs are: butyric acid, dimethyl disulfide, dimethyl trisulfide, 2-heptanone, 2-nonanone, and 2-octanone. Together, you get a rancid banana-butter-floral-onion mess. “The need to conserve the environment by reducing the wash temperature and the use of biodegradable washing products have grown in importance in the millennium, making this type of research more high profile,” co-author Professor John Dean told Phys.org."

The weekly advances in aromachemistry are simply amazing. If there were a non-harmful way to naturally alter one's own personal aromachemistry, say a pill or beverage, would you try it?

Yvette Manes at Romper.com discusses smell sensitivity and morning sickness

Morning sickness is a misnomer. Anyone who has ever had pregnancy-related nausea knows that it can strike morning, noon, or night. When you're pregnant, your sense of smell is heightened and the increased sensitivity can wreak havoc on your stomach. Suddenly, everyday smells or scents you never noticed in the past can have you hovering over the toilet. For some moms-to-be, there are particular smells that make morning sickness worse.

As a man I don't have to worry too much about this, but I'm curious, for those of your who experience scent sensitivity during pregnancy, what scents were you most averse to? Did anything change post-pregnancy?

Pimpernell, I had it when I finally managed to quit smoking after a pack a day since middle school. 3 years on and I still live and die by my nose!

Wow, great topics!
Bees - my favorite non-canine animals. How about that, they consciously create their own scents. I underestimated insects by assuming their only scents were pheromones. "We all underestimate what animals can do because we overvalue language and technology," she typed on her tablet.

Stinkiness - not to offend, but oftentimes when I read a negative review of an otherwise reliable scent, I wonder what the writer has eaten or encountered. Coffee, meat, spices, drugs - these radically change a person's smell.

Re; morning sickness, I can relate to Pimpernell (I hope all is well with you now btw) I find fragrance relieves the nausea and sickness caused by my IBD. Mint, lavender, rose, spices and gentle florals all soothe and calm -Caldey Island Lavender is a go to for when I'm really bad. Furthermore, some gourmands help alleviate the cravings for foods my stomach can longer tolerate but I still crave (oooh chocolate muffin! Thankfully we have Montale Chocolate Greedy and Al Rehab Choco Musk for that). For me, fragrance can be a real healer and it is is no coincidence that it was when I started getting really sick from the IBD that I started seriously getting into it.

It was not morning sickness that gave me increased sensitivity to odours, but the medication I had to take during all those years I was fighting cancer. Depending on what treatment I was on I would find most smells, from food, to air pollution, to body odors...... stifeling. At times I was close to panic. - That is when I discovered I could use my fragrances as a remedy. Cardamon, vanilla, lemon, lime, coriander and fig would somehow signal my brain that my surroundings was not a garbage dump. Thanks to some favorite fragrances I did not have to take any medication for my permanent condition of nausea. Now that I have survived and off the medications, I am a happy and grateful fragrance addict, but today I choose them according to the mood I am in and can indulge in all the notes in the spectrum of aromas.

Xyrena is killing it with their marketing. I love the VHS idea and the names of the fragrances.
Also very excited about Tiffany! Hope they can do something unique and timeless and not some watered down fruity-floral like most houses can pump out in a day.
And the bee perfume info is amazing. Nature rocks.
