This genus of flowering plants has two distinct ranges—one originating in Europe and the other varieties found in the Himalayas. The European variety is a perennial and is sometimes considered a weed due to its heavy seeding. One of the Himalayan varieties is the national flower of Bhuthan, and other Himalayan varieties are purpoted to have medicinal properties. Both ranges are noted for their brightly-colored beautiful blue flowers.
