Mimosa is a rich genus of about 400 different species of herbs and shrubs. Its name is often a source of confusion for many people worldwide – its true name is Acacia, although some European nations and Russians use this name to refer to the locust tree. Mimosa originates from Australia and belongs to the family of Mimosoideae, which is a subspecies of the family Fabaceae. The flowers of the main species are pink in color, even though we often associate Mimosa with its soft and fluffy bright yellow blossom.

Mimosa grows as a three with a high crown graced with small yellow flowers. For me, flowers of the yellow mimosa are the reminiscent of the waves, full of sun and sweetness. They are soft and dreamy and have a wonderful natural scent that describes the awakening of nature. This smell is the very essence of happiness and youth.

Mimosa is a notable symbol in many cultures. For Masons, it is an insignia of purity and the endurance of the soul. In many countries all over the world, such as Italy or Russia, mimosa is linked to the International Women's Day holiday (March 8th). On this day, women are given beautiful flower bouquet of mimosa. In other cultures it is a symbol of immortality and resurrection, because mimosa blossoms often emerge with the first sunshiny days in the late winter. In Montenegro, citizens of a small coastal town of Herceg Novi, celebrate the interesting flower carnival dedicated to mimosa blossoms. Mimosa Festival gathers young girls – majorettes – to parade in their festive uniforms along the sunny waterfront each February.

Yellow and fragrant bouquets of mimosa are often a source of inspiration for many perfumers. The scent of mimosa has a distinctive honey-like aroma, greenish and tart at the same time. It is delicate and very intimate, and true adornment to ambrosial compositions. My favorite fragrance inspired by mimosa is certainly sweet and floral, and yet very fresh, L'Artisan Mimosa Pour Moi. In this perfume, the scent of mimosa if combined with green lives and twigs and warped in bitter and rich taste of cranberries.

Another similar perfume is Fragonard Mimosa. This is somewhat greener, very cheerful, sunshiny and sweet. Another fresh and floral interpretation of mimosa is offered in Yves Rocher Pur Desir de Mimosa. In this composition, mimosa blends with green notes to illustrate the awakening of the spring.

L'Occitane Mimosa d’Esterel is a gourmand scent that combines mimosa blossom and almond in a Mediterranean-inspired fragrance. This is a sweet, powdery and pollen scent chilled with the floral notes of violet. Another nice and creamy interpretation is found in Summer by Kenzo edition, where mimosa is surrounded with citruses and almonds.

Full-strength mimosa is offered in a romantic scent of Guerlain Aqua Allegoria Tiare Mimosa. This is a gentle and feminine fragrance that combines mimosa blossoms with pink pepper and tiare flower. More refined is the Champs Elysees, where mimosas are in a very pleasant and sophisticated company, flirting with fruit juices of cantaloupe, sliced peaches, violet flower petals, peony, lilac, and hibiscus… Givenchy pays a special attention to this flower from year to year. Their epic fragrance Amarige carries the sweet juice of mimosa: Givenchy Amarige Mimosa de Grasse Milesime 2005, Givenchy Harvest Mimosa 2007, Givenchy Harvest Mimosa 2009
