There are few perfumes which do not contain musk, because it is an ideal component for a fine finish and fixation of perfume composition on skin. The term 'musk perfume' is not connected to a concrete perfume component, but to the overall impression of the components, which varies from sweet, powdery, to animalistic, leathery, spicy and woodsy fragrance. The natural musk is produced of sexual glands secretion of musk deer, but it is a horrible way, as production of 1kg of musk requires 140 deer to be slayed. Luckily the natural musk scent can be produced from plants such as ambrette, galbanum and angelica root. The most benign is, of course, synthetic musk, or white musk, first produced by Alber Baur in 1888. Since that time many variances of synthetic musk nuances used in perfumery have appeared since the beginning of the last century.
