Antaeus (for men)

Designer: Chanel Olfactive Group: Woody Chypre
Video

Antaeus is the name of ancient Greek demigod. Strong, like a god, and gentle as a man, Antaeus belongs to those perfumes of expressed individuality and strong character which emphasize masculinity, what was a trend in 1980-ies. Myrtle and sage, lime and thyme have united to give the fragrance a special freshness and masculine character. The fragrance is warming up and becomes intensive at the end due to patchouli, sandal and labdanum in the base. Sharp animalistic nuance is brought in by the notes of castoreum and leather.

The top notes include lemon, lime, coriander, myrtle, clary sage, and bergamot. The heart is composed of thyme, basil, rose and jasmine, while the base of patchouli, castoreum, labdanum, and oak moss. The perfume was created by Jacques Polge in 1981. Antaeus was launched in 1981.

I can describe this fragance with just one word: masculine. But i can add a few: classy, mysterious, sharp and dark. I bought it when i was 18 three years ago, and maybe i was too young for this scent, but now... i guess i have the right to use iy

Rich, darkly sweet, sparkling, and very different from the men's fragrances I encountered in the 80's. Masculine to the utmost. Looking back, it was far too mature for me. As others have pointed out, a powerhouse scent, requiring light application. A metal container bought in more recent times did not smell the same, though - has the formulation changed? Was the metal of the container (as opposed to the orginal glass) a factor? Very hard to come by in the States, but I will certainly add this to my wardrobe again in the near future.

I agree 101% with gerco!!! I love men wearing this... It shows remarkable poise and confidence in a man. Unfortunately men who have become accustomed to lathering themselves with cologne will find Antaeus overwhelming. It's a cologne that doesn't need to be hosed on guys!!! This gorgeous fragance only needs to grace your skin lightly. Out of all the mens colognes out there, this ranks in the top 3. It's a classic and one of the best from Chanel so far.

This masterpiece -Antaeus- will rock your boat, and not only yours, but everyone's around you !

Top: Clary sage, Lavender
Heart: Patchouli, Sandalwood
Base: Amber, Rockrose, Spice, Honey

Sparkling sharp notes of sage and lavender greet you almost instantly upon spraying. These top notes are gripping and powerful, with lavender being the dominant note.
A luscious heart of sandalwood and patchouli tone down the loud notes and lend a light powdery feel to the composition.

The heart segues into a dry, arid base of leather with a touch of amber keeping the proceedings from disintegrating into a caustic leather showdown. The longevity is legendary, just like Antaeus himself.

Antaeus is definitely one of the finest mens fragrance from Chanel.
Its a very virile potent juice which is skillfully composed with impressive results. The intensity exhibited in the top notes subside as the fragrance progresses from the top notes to the basenotes. Its a reflection of the battle between Hercules and Antaeus.

Wearing Antaeus won't make you feel like a god, but it might make you appreciate a near god-like performance in modern perfumery. And it will send out the message of selfconfidence and maturity, in combination with blund power.

If you like the classic scents, you should give this one a try. If you are into that aqua, frehs and cool new watered down fragrance things you can shower yourself in, you will hate Antaeus. (too bad for you).

Believe it guys, this is a winner scent for decades now, and it will be for decades to come.

Use it carefully, don't overspray. This 80's powerhouse with extreme longevity and dito sillage doesn't need more than 2 sprays.

Conclusion:
Definitely in the list of my favourite 5 Male Fragrances ever !!!

9,5 / 10

The first blast is quite manly. As it dried down, it changed drastically. I swear it smells much like Chanel No. 5. And I do not like Chanel No. 5. I started to get a headache, very similar to the averse reaction I have to Chanel No. 5. Looking above, I see no aldehydes, which are often implicated in headache-inducing fragrances. But surely, there is something that is similar in these two, and Antaeus is just the male-marketed version. So sad, cuz I'd heard so much about this fragrance. However, it is not something I can tolerate.
