Amouage Gold pour Homme Fragrance Reviews

My first sampling of Amouage Gold was in less than auspicious circumstances. During an especially tedious train journey, I decided to relieve my ennui with a perfumed daub of the wrists. What ensued was magnificent, epiphanous, and a treat for my rapidly atrophying brain. Not even the baleful stares of a small child opposite me - with two tusks of snot descending from his nose could detract from this wonderful experience. In my mind, I was somewhere else, somewhere in the lap of luxury, being pampered and preened.

It does everything you would expect from a hyper-expensive niche fragrance with the soubriquet "Gold". Served up in a gold garnished bottle - it is opulent, bombastic and a celebration of excess. Although the extraordinarily dense rose dominant opening is a real breath catcher, it is a simple creation, highly polished, and exhibiting remarkable radiance. Although the evolution is minimal, Amouage Gold is that very rare beast - a male floral of outstanding quality, and not in the least apologetic.

Gold is the consummate orator - you may not like what he says, but you have to admire the passion and the self belief.

I agree with many reviewers here who comment on how they prefer this to
the Gold for Woman. This is just SO much more wearable and softer.
More subtle in every aspect, and yet with terrific staying power. A little goes a long way, so spray gently!
On a woman, this would be kept for 'grand' occasions and formal wear.
It will rule you, unless you rule it first!

An extremely classic humongous animalic floral enriched by the typical Amouage frankincense signature on top. Rose, mimosa and civet galore. Expansive, huge, extremely rich and definitely ostentating but so well executed that the only thing left is to sit down and enjoy its majesty. Surely one of most challenging and hardest compositions to approach in the Amouage regular range. Definitely not for everybody.

Me? I probably wouldn't wear it even if subjected to torture but it's still an outstanding composition.

Gold opens with a rich floral notes, specially Lily-of-the-valley and rose that together makes me think about a vanilla aroma. Strange since you can't find it on the notes. Anyway, very different from what I was expecting: an incense based fragrance like Jubilation XXV, Epic Man and even Ciel Man. The drydown gives you an animalic combo around the civet note.

A dated fragrance to my nose. Not pleasant at all compared to masterpieces like Jub. XXV, Epic Man in my opinion but my mother just loves it!

I had no notion until I smelled Gold Men that I'd formed an image (fantasy) in my mind of what the old-school animalic floral/orientals of the early 20th century were. On smelling Gold Men, I realized that I did, and that this was it.

Sensational, huge powdery animalic fragrance. Now I understand why these old perfumes were both powdery and animalic. If you do it right, it's brilliant.

As spectacular a ride as the top and heartnotes of this perfume are, the drydown is one of the best I've smelled. It's there, softer and quieter than the topnotes, but it remains fully-fleshed and complete. The drydown isn't just a ghost of the heartnotes.

Gold Men is powerful and distinctive. Not for shrinking violets, not for somebody who doesn't want to be identified for his scent. Certainly not for someone who wants to read as contemporary in a pop or trendy sense. Gold Men is more a leader than a follower in this respect. It is one of a very few fragrances that I could wear forever and be utterly happy.

I got a number of amouage samples last week and just sort of gave it a sniff and thought to myself that I didn't understand whats all the fuss about it
Biggest mistake ever I must admit being a total philistine.
Today I applied amouage gold for man and my lord what an explosion of lily of the valley and rose hip, followed by patchouli and sandalwood. I don't know what it is but smelling this made me salivate. is it the oak moss which gives it a certain freshness? I made the mistake to apply this to liberally
It needs to be used very , very, very sparingly to be worn correctly. And like Sculptur of soul reviewed amouage gold earlier to give it any less then five star would be indeed an insult.
An absolute masterpiece, Yet I am sorry to say but I could not think of it as a masculine fragrance. To much lily of the valley which reminds me of my favorite aunt. A fragrance so powerful it overtakes, yes hijack's my personality completely. I respect and love the smell of it but wouldn't dare to wear it.

I never followed up on this but this is one of my all time faves. As a child I used to smell rose hippie incense and at the same time be obsessed with India and Hinduism due to the Time/Life Great Religions series. A child's imagination can fill in so much and be both wildly off and startlingly accurate. When I smelled Gold the pictures in my mind's eye of palaces and rose petals and the smell of my friend's sister's incense came back to me...but she had cheap incense and suddenly the real thing behind the concept was revealed. Pure and incredible, sweet and soaring. It was intense. I know it's from Oman rather than India but I see the latter when I smell it. No, I actually associate it with the movie the Fall, which I watched around the same time I first smelled Gold, and all of the incredible locations in Asia in it. If you ever get a chance to see it in a theater wear Gold when you go and it will double the freakout (it's a very intense movie).

I'm amazed that there are men who contribute to this site who think a masculine is bad because it smells like a feminine. Whatever. I'll wear anything I like: Manoumalia, Fracas, Apres l'Ondee...and Amouage Gold pour Homme! It's incredible.

It's so strange is that people have mentioned Chanel No5. I sprayed this on me the the other day as I have minis of the Amouage scents. That's the first thing I said to my partner.

This...DOES smell like Chanel No5 but with a msaculine edge. It's like Chanel number 5 with added smoke and heaviness. Totally not for me. I will be passing this on to someone else who will love it more.

It's like it's very full of cloying strong notes that completley take over your nose and just not something I'd wear. Simply cannot stand it. Very heavy on the Patchouli/Civet/musk.

An exceptional floral for men that is extremely luxurious and warm. This scent is an extreme powerhouse, I can't imagine using more than one spray, ever. Even one spray can verge on cloying. Although, with proper application this scent is a sublime combination of florals, frankincense, and animalics.

Gold Man starts very floral with a strong lily of the valley nestled against a melange of other floral notes, but is done in a more restrained way than monstrous florals for women such as say, Amarige. The heart is a warm and slightly animalic and powdery blend of frankincense, myrrh, civet, sandalwood, and the receding floral notes. The base slowly softens over time and becomes slightly more powdery but never loses its fullness thanks to the sandalwood and ambergris. I should note that if you really love the heart notes of this fragrance you should check out Mona Lisa (by Profumo.it) as it is quite similar to this stage, but all natural (and very very good in its own right).

To give Gold Man anything less than five stars would be an insult to the ideas and concepts niche perfumery stands for. Love it or hate it, there's simply no questioning that this scent is of the highest quality, something that can't be said for many niche scents, sadly. One more thought - it reminds me in some ways of MPG's Or des Indes, although more floral and less powdery, and even higher quality. It also, despite being more floral, comes across as more masculine than the decidedly unisex Or des Indes.

Today I sprayed a bit on my husband before he got out. And now as I checked the notes I'm wondering: why did I hurt him so much? He's got strong allergy for rosehip. OMG.
And I have to admit, that Gold pour Homme as a fragrance didn't work for him at all. Rosehip, for sure, is to be blamed.

WOW! I love this scent and yes it is a "nuveau retro" instant classic!

I agree with the CHANEL #5 reference and I would add the Shalimar for men as it is quite soapy in the beginning.

Very pungent, strong and instantly recognizable!

A true golden STAR of a scent...I cannot stop sniffing!!

Instantly makes you feel divine and worth a million bucks!

MASTERPIECE!

Good blend, good ingredients, BUT it smells VERY old and like most Amouage for men; smells more feminine than masculine.
Smelling like my grandma...

edited: I am not a fan of civet. This is the note I don't like in this blend.

edit: 10 jan 2011... Now I like it very much. Must say I love it. But yes, this is an old fashioned perfume. Is it civet or something else animalistic with a real heavy powdery old scent. Remind me an old woman but in the nice way. Also heavy floral notes. Really long lasting on my skin. from 7 to 8/10 now!

As much as I adore Gold pour femme, I find myself turning to my tiny sample of the masculine version just as often, if not more so. The two scents are much alike, at least in theory. But, while the feminine has a swirling floral opening and a wickedly animalic drydown, the masculine starts off with a crystal-bright mist of herbs, flowers, and citrus, and then wafts downward into a sandalwood and amber whisper, like the strong hand of a lover stroking your palm into delicious submission. Put this scent on your skin, and it will work its way into your psyche.

One of the great mysteries to me. This smells great on my sister as does Gold for women, it is just ok on my mother (as is women), but on me it's just a disaster. Offensive when it first goes on, it then dries down it a baby powder, then it just gets nastier in a way I can't adequately explain.

I gave this 24hrs and it just got worse, it can be said that it has excellent staying power because I had to scrub myself twice to get rid of it.

Lovely on some, just plain nasty on me.
