The touch of gold this time comes with Avon's Rare Gold. It opens with notes of ylang-ylang, freshly sweet bergamot, and mandarin, with heart wrapped with purely sweet jasmine, orange blossom, lily of the valley, tuberose, gardenia and aldehydes. The base brings woodsy notes of sandal wood, amber and powdery vanilla.

In line with the name, the bottle is colored in golden nuances. Rare Gold was launched in 1995 and comes as 50ml (1.7 fl.oz.) EDP.

Well, I gave it a shot based on reviews. I heard some people saying that it smelled very "mature." The rumors are true. I think I will give it to my mom. She may like it. It kinda reminds me of a "Youthdew" type fragrance which my mom loves. I have Rare Pearl too, and that one was actually nice. I would recommend Rare Pearl before Rare Gold, although who knows, maybe I am biased because it reminds me of my mom's perfume and I associate it with matronly and nothing else. I just sprayed it again and now it is reminding me of some sort of airfreshener. A floral/spicy one. Also reminds me a little of Rapture by Victoria Secret.

Ylang Ylang, Peach, Amber. Exactly as listed on the main notes section. I kinda get a Red Door-ish vybe on the dry down tho. The limited edition reformulation not the original. It's an okay frag. Don't reach for it as much as the RP and RD but it's a goodie.

Rare Gold right now is TUBEROSE on my skin. Gosh, is this the maturation, a warm summer night, or merely my chemistry? I don't know; all I know is Rare Gold smells truly classic and way more expensive than it is.

Gardenia, jasmine and sandalwood are also detectable to my nose and lovely too.

Indeed I may skip buying a bottle of Givenchy's Organza -which is on my wish list-, as Rare Gold smells quite similar to me now.

The truth is that this perfume is good. Smells like blossoms of white flower with amber and ylang ylang but to me its good only when i smell it in the bottle. When the perfume comes to my skin its smells awfull the amber is too sharp and sour and this ylang ylang sharp as a knife. Everyone beging me not to wear it cause its smell so bad to me. I gave it to my sister. I prefer Rare Pearls or Rare Diamonds...

I just got this and am immensley pleased. It smells amazing and has completely changed my mind about Avon perfumes. I do own a few, but they were lackluster for the most part... or just not the right scent for me. This one has that red berry under note that I *LOVE* even though it's not listed as a note. Maybe my nose just doesn't know what white floral smells like. I do not know. But I love it.

This scent is absolutely delicious. Its so feminine and pretty. This is a scent that I do not regret purchasing and that will become a staple in my perfume collection. I love to find great little perfumes like this that are a true unexpected treasure.
The amber and musk are the most prominent to me. It smells very creamy. I can also smell the flower components which is great. Great Job Avon.

NO-OOOOOO-Body does AMBER quite like Avon !!! The amber, musk, vanilla accord seems to accentuate so very many of the greatest Avon fragrances.

This fragrance reminds me of all that is so great about Avon. The word "cheap" or ANY derogatory word ever uttered Avon ought to shatter & crumble in the presence of this great creation. If some noses are not akin to this treasure, then I would chalk it up to an unschooled/knowledgeable olfactory center or wearer. I doubt this is a fragrance for immature noses or women. It is far too complex & "old school" to appeal but to the utmost discriminating women. For this is one amber, musk, vanilla accord that Avon built an empire on.

No one does amber blended with all types of other base accords quite like Avon. It seems Avon took the amber accord of Tabu & made it tasteful & Ladylike---acceptable to all---that drank in this accord. But these women were WOMEN that dared to walk out into this world smelling this good. Usually things like this were hidden for the boudoir & not the office or church. But this golden juice is so very good, who could not fall for it's ylang-ylang opening, laced with peaches so ripe they are bursting forth onto a bed of smouldering amber?

Each and every note unveils itself as only Avon does. But the big thing that strikes me again about Avon---when they do a vanilla note, in the faintest hint of the base---that is when Avon does it the best. The vanilla accord is the last holdout & when it unveils it is anything but that came from handling a rolling pin. This is not dime-store vanilla. It is vanilla for one like me that is NOT usually favorable to vanilla. I hate that vanilla-extract note in Beyoncé & other celeb frags. But the amber/sandalwood accord that leads to the vanilla draw in the nose very close. And it comes across as very feminine & hypnotic rather than the knock-you-out celeb frags of today. You must wait for that delicious vanilla accord. And THIS is that what smites & draws in closer with the most delicious vanilla accord which is only detectable with snoot planted on skin. The blend of amber & vanilla to peek amongst all the wood anchoring the ylang-ylang that Anais Anais promised, seems like a too-huge order to fill. But Bare Gold teaches Anais-Anais Cacharel a lesson on some legevity---which Anais Anais never delivered. So if you want ylang-ylang to deliver more, reach for Rare Gold.

This is an utmost classic---much like the great movies & other things I can experiencce & collect.

I want to experience the best while I can. And this one is in my top 10. A lesson on how to do amber!!!! Get it while you can.

I've always considered that 'Rare Gold' was one of the most elegant perfumes by Avon. It's pretty heavy and floral - but all in all, it's great.

Very happy with my Rare Gold purse sized spritzer. I have no clue what aldehydes smell like, but to me this is a sweet floral. I sprayed this on my sleeve around 11am and it's still here at almost 4pm. I mostly smell ylang ylang, with peach in the background...It smells very warm, feminine, and classic. I don't think it smells cheap, either. I guess I'm the outlier in the group because the fruity floral-ness of this makes me want to wear it in warm weather. I would only spray this once or twice because it seems like it could get a bit heavy :)

Being the southern USA girl I am, I confess to loving everything big, gorgeous, rich and long-lasting. Although I am a Frag Freak and love scents from all categories, I tend toward the whopper spicy orientals in cooler weather, cool chypre fruity/florals in the warm season. What bayou girl can resist oak moss for goodness sake? It's "home". Mossy oak trees and magnolias. We are born and raised with strong smells all around us. Spicy food, almost suffocating yet heavenly, super heady florals and the smell of wood and earth is everywhere.
This is why..

I ADORE Rare Gold. Sans wood and moss I don't get much of here, this is the smell of southern summer flowers in full bloom. Their scents are captured right in this bottle and it is pure luxe. Yes, it is sweet, juicy, big and bloomy, and that is exactly what I love about it. I detect honeysuckle, carnation and gardenia very clearly in this one along with the occasional hint of roses. Only gardenia is listed as one I detect but the others are wrapped in a floral aldehyde blend. They are definitely there and I know this without making the stuff, therefore my intro. The peach is not a stand-out peach to me. I have to "listen" for it but it is certainly there and well it should be. Avon has outdone themselves with Rare Gold. It smells deliciously expensive for the price, which... to my dismay continues to climb at the "discontinued" price since my initial discovery.

The overall composure is a perfect blend more than very well executed. It is sweet. Use care when spraying and that can be easily tamed. The slightest spritz on each wrist will last all day and keep drying down to even more fabulous. I find nothing too sharp, nor sour wilting flowers as sweet florals tend to go on me. It's jez' absolutely dee-VINE-lee gawjuz, Darlin'. Furthermore, as dressy and rich as it smells, I feel perfectly at home wearing it with jeans or yoga pants. When is it ever a bad time to smell incredible? Got me grinnin' like a mule eatin' briars. ;)

I do not suspect this will be a fragrance anyone would find highly unique or unusual. This is pure classic magic and overwhelmingly beautiful IF, and only if you love sweet florals, which I usually steer far away from due to my skin chemistry, but Rare Gold has done what no other could do so far... after all these years -
*sings to the nanny nanny boo boo tune*
"I can wear a flo-ral, I can wear a flo-ral*
And I a-yum lovin' it,
yum-mee, yum-mee, yuhhhm-mee
Lucky, lucky me-ee!" (Damn, this stuff smells good.:)

I only have a small 5mL bottle of this with the little fan on top. It's a rich, warm, sweet scent, at first I thought it was just the peach and mandarin coming through but then I really notice the Ylang Ylang and it is really beautiful. Quite long last with moderate sillage. I don't know the recent version but this one is really nice but the richness really comes through, not sure I would get a full sized bottle but I'm really happy to have this little beauty.

Rare Gold has a sandy quality to it that reminds me of Dune. I'm not going so far as to say that it smells just like Dune. It doesn't. But the hint of dry sand behind the sweetness and floral in Rare Gold presents in a similar way on my skin. For the price, this is a really nice little fragrance.

I just received this fragrance along with the powder as an early Christmas present. I used it this morning and was delighted with this beautiful, feminine, warm fragrance. It opens with a slight fruity, peachy note, and quickly the rich florals come in, and they are beautiful! Jasmine, ylang ylang and gardenia , not overpowering, but distinct and lush. This perfume ends with a mellow amber, vanilla and woody cloud. Rare Gold is not too gentle, but certainly not strong or obtrusive. It would do well in a day or night setting. I really like this one, and the price is great as well !

I first bought Rare Gold in 1995, loved it, and wore it a lot. It was in the bottle with the fan shaped cap. I haven’t worn it in years and finally bought a new bottle recently. I’m not sure what’s changed, my nose, my memory, or the scent itself. I used to think it was quite sweet but now I find it more floral and woody. It still has that sparkly peach note, orange blossom which my skin loves to magnify, a tiny hint of tuberose, and warm woods. I still like it. I wish I had a bottle with the fan shaped cap to compare. It really does seem to project a golden aura, so the name is good fit.

My wonderful secretary bought me 2x 50ml EDP bottles as a belated birthday/early Xmas pressie. Too wonderful. I've been chasing Gucci Accenti-wanna-be fragrances for a while. This one is very peachy on the opening. It settles down to honey and peach. I do like it although I'm no big fan of honey. I would suggest this as a summer fragrance since much like Accenti, it needs HEAT to douse the overwhelming BOOM. This turns into a wonderful, sultry fragrance on warm skin on a hot day. If you like the 90's fragrances and like peach, do try a tester. I think it might be too heady in cold weather - it probably just hangs around your head all day. :-) I am surprised at the staying power of Avon fragrances. Not shabby!

To me, this fragrance is a personification of gold sparkle or glitter. It smells like peach, flowers and sweetness all the same time, switching from one thing to another. Only thing to complain about: the plastic sprayhead is way too cheap. I'm a guy who can't get enough of florals and just got this to try it out. It wasn't really my thing so I gave it to my sister. She loves it.

If you like Elizabeth Taylor's Diamonds & Emeralds, try this. It is very similar with the white flowers, orange blossom and warm base. I love that when Avon does do a fragrance it is so affordable to layer the scent and purchase a coffret. Deodorant, lotion, perfumed body veils, powder, perfumes, shower gels, toilette sprays...it's all ours at ridiculously low prices and they offer many amazing and classic scents. Cheers!

This smells almost identical to the 99p drugstore spray Charlie - Gold except with added notes. It's a warm smell but you can tell the scent has been around for a while; it has that sweet, musky pre-90's smell to it. Saying that, it's not bad. The sillage is pretty good. As a 24 year old woman I'd say it's a bit pre-dated now but it's not the worst you can buy for £7.

Bought it from my friend who carries those aon catalogues around every month in our college. First i didnt like it because i expected something different,it sememed sinthetic to me and not florl at all. But sine i squandered ma cash i tried to come to tems with this perfume and to like it as much as possible. I spritzed some gingerly onto ma hair, then even otno ma body itself, and then magic happened! It felt exotically sweet, flowery sweet and intense,it can blend with certain skin chemistries fabuluously! I was lucky enough to possess such skin. Initially i hoped for other fmaily members to borrow it as often as possible so tht i run out of it quickly, now i dont awnt to gitve it to anyone It kind of breathes sweetness out in hot, sexy gasps!

i can't believe it took me so long to buy this one, there was an offer to buy 2 perfumes for the price of one and I thought instead of buying 2 of the same perfume, let's just buy RG and I've got nothing to lose and my oh my... this is so luxurious, my mom said I smell like a lady out of the blue without knowing what I am wearing!! this means feminine, classy & sophisticated and she summed it up.. at work, a colleague asked me if I was wearing JPG's Classique, LOL.. I was complemented all day long because of this rare scent and it does wonders with hot weather.. i'm truly in love ^^

I really love Rare Gold. The name matches the scent perfectly. It is very classy and timeless to me. I would label it an Oriental floral. This scent brings to mind a tasteful, sophisticated lady who is also warm and kind to everyone. It is peachy at first, then dries to an ambery, powdery floral. Nice longevity, too. I love that Avon offers powder and deodorant in a lot of their fragrances, I wish more companies did.

I bought this perfume when it was first launched in 1995 (I was 18 then ..) but it easily became my Mom's signature perfume . No Doubt it's one of Avon 's BEST creations , but not for anyone , I wore it then for a few time but it's not for a teen , it's for a mature woman (not old ) with confidence & charm. So anyone can literally use it from the age of 20 to 80, but she has to be "mature" enough not just "old" . This is almost the only perfume I have come across that smells EXACTLY like the Jasmine we have it here in Egypt ,and it retains that same fresh scent.Jasmine has been around me here everywhere while growing up , so I know exactly what I am talking about ...In other perfumes I smell "stale " Jasmine , not the real flower which I know ..Have to say the ad with the lady wearing golden dress & lots of fine golden jewellery was the perfect front to that fragrance , this is a typical oriental lady who loves real gold ;)

I can sympathize with a number of the first reviews that mention this is a very strong, more mature fragrance... because when this first goes on- it is STRONG STUFF!!! Strong enough to give even the most hearty fragrance wearers a slight headache... so this is one that I would recommend spraying once, then dabbing on the wrists and neck... 4 squirts of this could be TOXIC!!!

After the initial dry down (about 30 minutes to an hour), this becomes quite nice... if not completely enchanting and totally mesmerizing.

I hate to be catty here, but I've seen a lot of reviews that seem to knock some of fragrances with depth and substance, if they have more depth than the typical bubble-gum variety sweet essences that are so prominent in stores like Victoria's Secret and The Body Shop. Some reviews toss the term "mature" about as if they were slamming these fragrances because they are designed to be worn by women, and not merely "girls"... this seems to taint the reviews of fragrances which may fit best on a more mature woman.

Yes. There is definitely a level of sophistication and elegance that comes about when you are no longer drawn to bubble gum sweet smelling cotton candy-ish fragrances. Sometimes this comes with women reaching a certain age, then again- it can just be the level of class and sophistication of the woman herself.

Imagine Hollywood casting an ingenue in the role fit for a QUEEN! Hey, there are women who can wear fragrances of depth - and those that should not even try! Let's face it - there is a huge difference in the woman that can take on the role of a true QUEEN-- and the one that can merely play the role of the Princess (this is not to say that the Princess will grow into the QUEEN in time, but for now... choose wisely. Only a QUEEN should wear certain fragrances with depth). Fragrance is much the same way. Sometimes your age, stage, level of refinement - or lack- thereof may dictate which clothing you wear... and which type of fragrance range you should wear. This is neither "right"- "wrong"... "good"-"bad"-- but simply a basic FACT!

Off my soap box...

Back to Rare Gold:
This fragrance is ageless and timeless, but if I were having to choose a certain age group that would feel comfortable wearing this - it would be someone who is above the age of 32, someone who has a level of sophistication.

It is in the range with a lot of the fragrances that were popular during the mid-80's, where it lasts longer and has a more "mature" fragrance, than a lot of the bubble gum/candy-ish fragrances that smell almost "cheap"... lining the major store retail walls these days. This is more in the range with classic, elegant, and sophisticated fragrances that require that a woman be mature enough to wear the fragrance, and not be worn by it. This is for the woman who knows where she is going, and is not afraid to take the steps necessary to get there. Wall flowers, need not apply.

This is one of those perfumes that really grows on you.

I first discovered this after trying Avon's Rare Pearls, which was something that I had smelled on a woman that I was passing in a hallway - and just had to ask her "what are you wearing?" because it smelled so good on her. I'm kind of a fragrance snob, in many ways-- and I was shocked that this was an Avon fragrance and not an upper end department or boutique store brand. The reason that I say this, the blend of fragrances is very sophisticated and wears really well... unlike most drug store variety fragrances. Whoever created Rare Pearls and Rare Gold - really has a "gifted nose" and have blended two fabulous fragrances. When I bought Rare Pearls and began wearing it -- I received a ton of compliments, I was so impressed with the fragrance that I read reviews for Rare Gold - and ordered it based on what customers were saying. A number commented that Rare Gold was very similar to Rare Pearls, but a bit "more business".

It is one of the fragrances that scores the highest in my "morning after skin test" - where you wake up and smell your arm - and it is a HEAVENLY fragrance! It must be one of the best fragrances with my individual body chemistry, because the smell that I wake up to in the morning, is really fabulously sexy, clean, uplifting, and really HOT!!!

The price point is one of the best features of this fragrance, but if I did not know that this was an Avon fragrance, I would have thought that it was a very high end designer department store brand. It is unusual - you won't have 20 people telling you that they know the name of your fragrance. Rare Gold is something that you don't smell every day. A number of people have asked what I am wearing - so this proves that it must be THAT good with my chemistry!

-------------

Rare Gold is in the exact range of one of my favorite perfumes, First. If you like Rare Gold - do me a favor and try First. Rare Gold seems to bit a slight bit more spicy and has a cinnamon/apricot type base to it, where as First seems to have a slightly stronger earthy, woodsy, and slight floral scent.

I agree with PLUMPIE, I don't know why honey is not listed on the main notes as it is the first thing I smell when spraying this on me - a sharp, sweet honey smell. After that it settles down into a very warm and much more gentle floral scent. The warmth, honey and flowers reminds me of summery gardens. At first, you can smell it at a distance but over the course of the day it settles to your skin where it lasts for some impressive hours.
In my opinion, it is a lovely sweet and rich fragrance, although I can imagine it being perhaps too strong or sweet for some tastes.

Woo! I did NOT like this one. My body chemistry maybe? I got a bottle for Christmas in '07 or '08 as a sort of Avon Mashup Christmas basket from my niece. I tried it a few times because I liked the bottle and I think Avon does really well with perfumes. They have been in the business of making them for a long time! Bug spray. That's all this poor dear could ever smell like for me. Even after awhile of being on my skin... bug spray mellowed down.

If the most important words in real estate is 'location' times three then the most important words in pefume is 'body chemistry' times 10!

I find this a luxrious classic classy daytime fragrance. A classic yellow floral with amber and ylang ylang. I also detect honey. It shares similarities with Spellbound, Ysatis, 5th avenue (but way less sweet tuberose),Bob Mackie (powdery almost fleshy peach) Bijan and Poeme (syrupy yellow florals) but most of all Organza on my skin. This is more what Organza used to smell like before they reformulated it. Unfortunately long discontinued in our Avon books in my country but can be picked up pretty cheap on the net which is where I sourced my bottle. I can see myself using this one up pretty quickly as it suits all occasions/seasons and makes a good choice when I can't choose between my vast collection of heavy orientals/heady Chypres. I settle for this and run out the door.

The first time I smelled this scent, it was more mature, 'perfumey' and heavy than I thought it would be. It's not a bad smell however, but it does come off a little old school and timey to me. It also smells quite powdery and kinda reminds me of a luxurious washroom in a sense... not in a bad way though. It makes me think of a really nice bath/spa room in a casino that has a ton of air freshener, but it smells like clean linens, perfume, warm, flowery, with a classy antique richness... it smells familiar, like your grandma once brought you to this place when you were a young child. Overall, it is a very pleasant and full scent, not something I would personally wear often because of how heavy it smells and I don't know if I can pull off this mature smell. Seems to have very good silage and lasting power, people around you will definitely smell it.

Vintage ongoing relationship:
** ..and nearly 2 years later same bottle: This is now in my top 5 fanatically guarded precious scents. Vintage fan top remember though not the later formulae.
From something I wore just to spray on the bed for sleep ( God what a waste!) I am now ready to stand up and say. 'My name is pickledtink and I'm a Rare Gold-aholic.' It's getting hard to find with an increasing price tag but this fragrance does well bred impeccable manners combined with underlying erotic promise.

I have left this review intact over all it's facets and journey really just to demonstrate ( for me too) how delicate and personal the relationship is between our own chemistry and the magical interaction with the scents of flower, spice, earth and everything else which grows here.
It's so rich warm and creamy. Still no Citrus but warm, welcoming and the fade down is elusive. If you lay by an oak tree in the hot sun with a fleeting scent of soft flowers somewhere nearby whilst licking honey from a rosewood spoon you've got it.

A favourite of mine since I was about fourteen years old. It's so rich, warm, opulent, and just the right amount of fruitiness. I LOVE the immediate orange and peach notes. The ylang-ylang and amber set in afterwards and are just lovely.

Exude mystery with this warm, opulent floral of Ylang-ylang and Bergamot, surrounding a lush heart of Jasmine and Gardenia entwined with precious woods, luxuriant Musk, amber.
I never thought this sounded good on avon. I have the old one(fan like cap) I love it so much. One of the few that last all day, its one of my top favorite avon fragrance.

I must admit I was a little turn off by avon fragrances. It just reminds me of moms. I got a bottle of this years ago for Christmas from a coworker and I was a little hessitant to try it until I read the good reviews on this site. I was looking to give away this bottle I had hidden in my closet for years. I'm kinda glad I gave it a try. I love the opening notes. Smells fruity and powdery on me, very delightful. But ohhh no the drydown.... there the old lady scent I remember it to be came in and I was really disappointed.

This reminds me of something from my childhood, but can't think what! It is a warm, rich scent with heady jasmine/gardenia notes and a warm amber resin undertone. No musk notes in here for me, and not really getting the sweet peach either. Lasts well on the skin and clothes, dries down to a lovely comforting cosy warm floral, but not in your face....wouldn't describe it as Oriental, there's no real spice in there, but if you are no fan of jasmine/gardenia scents....steer clear...for some this may be headache inducing!

So just got it...smells like Guerlain Jardin de Bagatelle...(sorry if this has been said before)

I agree with many other reviews that this is very sweet with peach, jasmine, and amber. It isn't a bad perfume at all and very affordable however this is strong and lasts long; it could because too sweet if used too much.

I'm the kind of person that's always out for a bargain, and occasionally I give Avon a try in hopes that one of their inexpensive fragrances will sweep me off my feet. Rare Gold is nice and indeed very pleasant, however it's not the kind of fragrance that sends me over the moon.

Peach at the best of times, especially when dominant, is often too juicy and sour on my skin. The peach accord in Rare Gold is softened a little by the aldehydes and white florals, which in turn makes it a touch more agreeable on my skin. In fact I rather like its sparkly and crisp opening on me, I found that it showed a lot of promise.

I actually expected Rare Gold to be more powdery than it was, I am quite surprised to find it more of a peachy floral than anything else. It has a somewhat classic feel that I can only assume would appeal to a majority of women. It could be worn either casually or formally.

Unfortunately Rare Gold is a little linear in terms of composition. The drydown smells much the same as the opening, however on my skin it also had an added mustiness that wasn't all that pleasant.

The longevity was average, yet a lot longer lasting than I thought it would be, and the sillage was fairly soft. Looking over the reviews, many people seem to have worn this when it first came out. I wonder, do they still wear it now?

Bob Mackie with extra citrus and neroli thrown in for good measure. I smell a lot of orange flower as well. I used to sell Avon but never wore this because it felt to intense and "grown up" for me then. I'm older now and appreciate fragrance more than ever. I'm one of the Fragranticans whose body chemistry devours fragrance. Some of my "expensive" ones to me, last an hour or maybe I just can't smell them long enough to distinguish individual notes I'm familiar with. I've yet to isolate pineapple in Bob Mackie, the main reason I purchased it. But I tried to isolate mandarin and orange blossom in Rare Gold and the notes are so blended and very potent with my chemistry, my eyes popped out. What gives? Avon rarely reveals so many notes for their compositions. How can this AVON frag, classified as cheap, chemical, and linear, by many, last so long on me? Surely, this will stay on my skin long enough to discern the citrus notes which I like and want. Just a comment about longevity of a $15 fragrance. Not all Avon has such longevity for me, no,no. Thanks for letting me express my thoughts.

My mom has the original Rare Gold (different bottle) and it smells DIVINE on her! :)
I usually dislike floral, but the sweetness from the peach balances it out so perfectly. When I smelled this, I thought it was an expensive perfume. My mom's bottle just says "Rare Gold" on it, so I didn't know who made the perfume.
It smells very beautiful, elegant and classy.
I haven't tested this perfume on me yet, but if it smells as well on me as it does on my mom, I'll be sure to get a bottle for myself (and hope that the new Rare Gold hasn't changed much from the original!).

Rare Gold smells luxurious, with a mix of white flowers, fruit, amber and a touch of honey.
Warning: VERY sweet!!! Use sparingly or it could be offensive and overpowering. A couple of sprays will dry down to a lovely rich scent.
Pros: Excellent sillage and longevity; extremely affordable; smells luxurious.
Cons: Borders on cloying (def: to cause distaste or disgust by supplying with too much of something originally pleasant, especially something rich or sweet). Reminded me of Giorgio Beverly Hills and JP Classique.

I gave it a try...not for me. It was a gift from my cousin, since a patient of her gave it to her and obviously didn't like it. Gave it a try, it was too strong and bitter for my taste (and I like strong perfumes....). I also gave it away; I guess my chemistry does not go with it.

Rare Gold is what I was wearing when I met my husband. Back then it was a radiant floral oriental that was sexy and unusual. Everyone commented on it and I think I boosted Avon's sales in 1997 because people kept asking where to buy Rare Gold! Years later when I wore Jean Paul Gaultier Classique, my husband thought it was Rare Gold...so if you're craving the original Rare Gold, maybe Classique will work as a substitute. I haven't worn Rare Gold in years and years, because I was afraid to try it again having read that the reformulation is a horror. I didn't want to ruin all the happy memories. However, Fragrantica has restored my enthusiasm, with all these lovely reviews, so I will check out Avon's website and get myself some more Rare Gold.!

This is my first perfume ever and it gives me great memories.. <3 my mom gave it to me when I was five or something. I like this and I don't think it smells cheap - vice versa, it smells expensive and luxorious to me. In the opening, it's a little too much - I think it's the citruses.. Then it blends into feminine and sensual musk, neroli and jasmine. Not my favorite but nice.

I'm finding it difficult to get excited about this one. The good news is that it dries down to peaches and cream, although not particularly strong nor long-lasting. The bad news is that sprayed on clothing, it retains an alcoholic "I'm wearing perfume!" note. It smells good, just not great.

Im on the fence. Just sprayed it. you see to me, outsanding fragrances that demand "what are you wearing?" Are Giorgio original, Tresor, and Chanel No5 this is not in that category. Its not an amazing headturner. It is more alikened to the scent of a talc, or everyday body cream, or, dare I say it, the complimentary little sprays that are in the top 5 star hotels. Its a background fragrance. Its a "I care about smelling nice, not headturning"

Maybe it might force a comment "oh that smells like shes wearing Avon" It does last though.

I prefer to headturn. Actually I enjoy confusing too, so I sometimes wear Eau de Homme!

Vintage bottle with fan shape top:

Absolute disaster. Bought it blind as it has so many good reviews but although it doesn't seem to have gone off it's horrible on me from start to finish.
First off smells sickly sweet cheap and very chemical with no hint of citrus notes whatsoever.

30 minutes in and resisting the desperate urge to scrub it off it calms down somewhat to unconvincing Tuberose/Vanilla but still a stinker with something so bitter it makes my nose burn when I sniff my skin and I'm wondering if it might be useful as drain clearer.

Finally I'm left with a bearable but not pleasant powdery cheap talc.
Hate it.

Update:
Well who knew?
I've tried this several times since and it bears out the truth that we all interact with fragrances so differently according to our hormones, what we ate and where we're at.
It's never going to be in my top 10 but have found I'm favouring it for when I'm swanning around working home alone or as a fairly deep funky bedtime ( alone) choice. It's still clunky in execution and development and lacks that magic which a perfectly constructed perfume brings in it's elegant seamless dry down. However this juice is a shameless rather raunchy saloon girl with a gun in her garter, no table manners, too much lipstick and certainly no lady but she'd never let you down in a stand up knock down brawl.

I'm not usually a huge fan of the floral/floral fragrances. I prefer more depth and layers in scents, but this one is quite nice. The opening is a strong floral, but the dry down is much nicer/lighter. There are hints of citrus and orange blossom that do not supersede the floral scent. The citrus is really behind the scene in the opening. It reminds me of a really nice smelling Este'Lauder's "Beautiful". If you've read my review of Beautiful, you'll know I'm not a fan of that scent. This lends a little more youth to the heavy floral scent, but it is still not suitable for really young women. If you love florals, this one should be a winner for you. Floral, not offensive. Pretty and unusual thanks to the floral/ambery drydown.

I just received my UPS shipment of my Avon order, which included a set (bath, lotion, and purse size perfume) of Rare Gold. I find it lovely. It works well with my chemistry and I'm loving the warm floral scent. I just used a small spritz on the wrist and small spritz on the neck and that seemed to be just right. It's a heady scent so I could see how using too much may be headache inducing. I used a bit of the body lotion on my hands as well and was pleased to find it moisturizing and softening and not at all greasy. Nice quality. Of course, this campaign they're having the full size perfume included in the set for the same price instead of the purse size, which chaps my hide a bit, but oh well...overall, I don't regret the purchase and can see me using this up. Time will tell if I like it enough to reorder it, as I have with Rare Pearls and Timeless, which I keep stock of. I definitely get the comparison to Amarige - not identical, but in the same family for sure.

I kept seeing it in the Avon catalogue last year and it smelled great on the scratch 'n sniff circle. I bought it and and it was way stronger in real life than on paper. Update:
Oh, I really dislike this scent. It's rich indeed and could be beautiful but has something similar to Giorgio and Red Door, a nausating strong note that makes it unbearable for me. On the other hand it is very nice first but after a few minutes it becomes a heavy, overly sweet, overwhelming vanilla-scent. It IS a quality product since it lasts and lasts but IMHO Rare Pearls is far the best in this range.

I thought I would love this one and ordered unsniffed but that was quite a mistake. It must be a very well-done classy perfume but it just doesn't smell good on my skin. Every time i wear it I feel somewhat depressed and OLD, however, I like and use many of the classics.
It smells heavy, heady, rich flowery and honey-like, after a while I get more of the vanilla, but it's nothing more than that. Nothing special, nothing alluring. "just" elegant and a timeless classic. It's not for my skin, anyway.

(This review is for Eau de Perfume)

RARE GOLD starts with a beautiful opening of the classic floral aldehydes. The aldehydes are complimented by the opulent ylang-ylang and softened by the peach note. The scent is a great example of the soft and gentle aldehydes resembling the soft aldehydes in Chanel no 5, which I absolutely adore. The heart notes, however, do not turn powdery like some classical fragrances but stay floral and green with a bit of honey like sweetness. The jasmine and lily of the valley are most noticeable on my skin. I think the sweet honey like sweetness actually comes from the tuberose but it does not smell like a typical heady tuberose. It is like a slight sweetness, ephemeral and light. The base notes are mostly woody tones with the slight sweetness and hint of vanilla.

I am quite impressed with RARE GOLD. The well-done composition is cozy and pleasant to wear but there is also elegance and sophistication in this scent. It is very classy and the sillage and longevity are decent.

Last month one of my relatives was wearing a lovely perfume and I thought to myself that it smellt classy and expensive. I asked her what it was and she told me, to my surprise, that it was Rare Gold. I saw she had it though in the body spray version so I am not sure if it is any different from the perfume. Anyway, I sprayed it on myself and it lasted for about 3 hours, which is pretty good for a body spray. In an attempt to describe it, I would say it is a mixture of honey, peach and orange. I was thinking that it reminded me of elements of YSL Cinema and Amarige D'Givenchy. It is a strong fragrance so if you are not a fan of stronger powerhouse perfumes it may not appeal to you but if you do, give this a try.

I bought this yesterday and i'm glad i did it! It smells really expansive, very elegant and feminine, and I think every woman should have something like this in her wardrobe, a true classic. After I spray it on my wrist I feel very strong white flowers combined with aldehydes, a smell very similar with Chanel No5. After a while becomes a little bit fruity, but very rich and creamy thanks to honey note that I trully love in this! The base it's a little bit woody, but still creamy and sweet! I'm very glad that vanilla it's not overwhelming at all in this! My hubby loves it a lot too. Great price, great parfume, great job Avon! I wanna try Rare pearls also!

I liked Rare Gold when it first came out. It's a very pretty and bright floral. I would be careful about wearing it now though. It has enough strength to it that you would not want to wear it to work or anyplace where strong perfume isn't okay. It more of a retro perfume made before the lighter scents came into style. It's still one of Avons best and worth the price .

Rare Gold is a 'classic' kind of fragrance - a strong, sophisticated and elegant kind of fragrance. Rare Gold reminds me of perfumes like Estee Lauder's Beautiful and White Linen. I find it too heavy for the office use or for casual use. I normally prefer fruity florals but every now and then, I spray on some Rare Gold for that luxurious feeling.

I must be looking in the wrong place, as I can't find the civet listed anywhere, as mentioned in a previous review. Which note would be civet?
Just curious.

CIVET!
wow. i just got some genuine civet and for people who love this and think they don't like civet, they are mistaken.
i love the smell and combined with the white flowers this is a perfectly refined skankfest that in other hands would be too "edgy" and "niche"

i really do believe that because it's avon and the packaging, and because civet is such a particular small, this is an underrated magical fragrance.

Rare Gold has a really nice warm sweet dry down. I love a nice sandalwood-musk-vanilla dry down, with the vanilla being the least dominant. It is warm and sweet without everyone thinking, "Oh, you're wearing vanilla." I like that about it. BUT the opening notes smell cheap and artificial to me and I really didn't care for the first 30 minutes. You can't beat the price for it, though.

Too overbearing- I thought the white flowers got swallowed up by the aldehydes and base notes-

I read the reviews here and thought this must be a really good perfume. I sprayed it on my arm and was shocked --- I find it is very VERY strong, you would have to endure the journey from the beginning, even just sniffing it from the bottle gives me a headache, it is unbelievably intense to me, the base of my skull tightens and my temples pound. I really dont know how others find it pleasant I must be sensitive to something in it.

Avon doesn't always get it right. And truly, which perfume house does? All of them have some good scents and some bad. But when Avon gets it right, they REALLY get it right. The best scents from Avon are beautiful, long-lasting, and smell very expensive in spite of their affordable price. Rare Gold is one of these scents.

Any fan of florals will want to try this one, but Oriental fans might find something to love here, too. Rare Gold starts out with lush tropical white flowers and sweet nectar. It stays fresh and true all day long (I've been wearing my sample for almost 12 hours now and I can still smell it), and gradually fades to a beautiful vanilla-amber-musk base. I'm smitten!

I'm so glad I bought this! I bought it unsniffed, but it was only about ten bucks. What a deal! When I sprayed it on, my initial reaction was WOW gardenia! Luckily I like gardenia. The drydown reins some of in to a vanilla-ish, soft floral. Very elegant and uplifting. This would be a great winter time fragrance...and it lasts quite a while. Rare Gold smells A LOT like Faith Hill's premiere perfume that just came out. If you like it, save yourself a few bucks and get the Rare Gold instead. Definitely one of Avon's best, possibly THE best. Love it!

I wish the perfumiers currently inflicting all those dull, mediocre fruity-florals on us would take a good whiff of this gorgeous concoction - THIS is a stunning fruity-floral, rich, elegant, luxurious, wonderfully feminine and incredibly long-lasting. The entire 'Rare' range by Avon is fantastic, and this is no exception. Amazing scent and amazing value for money.

I normaly hate florals but this one is different. It smells rich and feminine.A very pretty girl scent as i call it.It reminds me a bit of chloe narcisse but i find chloe a bit cloying and kinda oldfashion. But this is softer and and slightly sweeter.Pure luxury,i think i wanna buy it sometime..

Rare Gold is quite a fresh floral fragrance which has warm sweet undertones. The fragrance has great staying power considering it is relatively cheap to buy, most of the time Avon fragrances don't have particularly good staying power, but this one has a staying power of approximately 12 ours or so before needing reapplied. The fragrance is quite strong and sweet when first applied but it soon dies down into a warm and seductive fragrance.

Such a disappointment! An oriental -and yes- spicy perfume which is the most heavy and nauseating one after the edp Opium!...All the spices (no one shows on the table, i know)you could imagine together on a heavy base!...I think ylang ylang has a huge role of this feeling and musk and amber together too...
Rare pearls was a perfume which i used with pleasure and depending on its trust i've bought it but this was a very bad experiment for me...

Initially I purchased this in the 99 cent shimmering body powder to get a feel for it. I am impressed by it's warm, glowing, sweet oppulence. My 5 yr. old at the time also fell in love with it, and begged with excited giggles to use it after her bath. It's regal, wear it with confidence.

I think it's one of the best by Avon. It makes people ask you what you wear.
I think Rare Pearls are not nearly as good as Rare Gold.

I wore the original Rare Gold when I first met my DH & he still loves it. When Avon changed the bottle style, I think they changed something in this, because it now smells different (not near as good). The original (the one with the fan shaped top) was very nice. The honey notes really came out on my skin as in the summer honey bees would buzz around my head LOL (not joking)they love this stuff!.
