The touch of gold this time comes with Avon's Rare Gold. It opens with notes of ylang-ylang, freshly sweet bergamot, and mandarin, with heart wrapped with purely sweet jasmine, orange blossom, lily of the valley, tuberose, gardenia and aldehydes. The base brings woodsy notes of sandal wood, amber and powdery vanilla.
In line with the name, the bottle is colored in golden nuances. Rare Gold was launched in 1995 and comes as 50ml (1.7 fl.oz.) EDP.

Love it, kinda smells like Estee Lauder SpellBound
I sense alot of amber notes in rare gold it's a great fragrance for evenings or a night out to dinner with your husband or other not my favorite but it's allright the amber notes are just a bit too much.
Rare Gold is what I was wearing when I met my husband. Back then it was a radiant floral oriental that was sexy and unusual. Everyone commented on it and I think I boosted Avon's sales in 1997 because people kept asking where to buy Rare Gold! Years later when I wore Jean Paul Gaultier Classique, my husband thought it was Rare Gold...so if you're craving the original Rare Gold, maybe Classique will work as a substitute. I haven't worn Rare Gold in years and years, because I was afraid to try it again having read that the reformulation is a horror. I didn't want to ruin all the happy memories. However, Fragrantica has restored my enthusiasm, with all these lovely reviews, so I will check out Avon's website and get myself some more Rare Gold.!
didn't love its tooo strong for me
luvvvvvvvvv it so much my favourite from avon
This is my first perfume ever and it gives me great memories.. <3 my mom gave it to me when I was five or something. I like this and I don't think it smells cheap - vice versa, it smells expensive and luxorious to me. In the opening, it's a little too much - I think it's the citruses.. Then it blends into feminine and sensual musk, neroli and jasmine. Not my favorite but nice.
I'm finding it difficult to get excited about this one. The good news is that it dries down to peaches and cream, although not particularly strong nor long-lasting. The bad news is that sprayed on clothing, it retains an alcoholic "I'm wearing perfume!" note. It smells good, just not great.
Something between Amarige and Organza. Definitely worth purchasing if you like the above. Lasts for ages. Has a decent sillage.
I like the Rare Gold drydown. It`s warm and clean and very similar to the drydown of Organza.
Im on the fence. Just sprayed it. you see to me, outsanding fragrances that demand "what are you wearing?" Are Giorgio original, Tresor, and Chanel No5 this is not in that category. Its not an amazing headturner. It is more alikened to the scent of a talc, or everyday body cream, or, dare I say it, the complimentary little sprays that are in the top 5 star hotels. Its a background fragrance. Its a "I care about smelling nice, not headturning"
Maybe it might force a comment "oh that smells like shes wearing Avon" It does last though.
I prefer to headturn. Actually I enjoy confusing too, so I sometimes wear Eau de Homme!
Vintage bottle with fan shape top:
Absolute disaster. Bought it blind as it has so many good reviews but although it doesn't seem to have gone off it's horrible on me from start to finish.
First off smells sickly sweet cheap and very chemical with no hint of citrus notes whatsoever.
30 minutes in and resisting the desperate urge to scrub it off it calms down somewhat to unconvincing Tuberose/Vanilla but still a stinker with something so bitter it makes my nose burn when I sniff my skin and I'm wondering if it might be useful as drain clearer.
Finally I'm left with a bearable but not pleasant powdery cheap talc.
Hate it.
Update:
Well who knew?
I've tried this several times since and it bears out the truth that we all interact with fragrances so differently according to our hormones, what we ate and where we're at.
It's never going to be in my top 10 but have found I'm favouring it for when I'm swanning around working home alone or as a fairly deep funky bedtime ( alone) choice. It's still clunky in execution and development and lacks that magic which a perfectly constructed perfume brings in it's elegant seamless dry down. However this juice is a shameless rather raunchy saloon girl with a gun in her garter, no table manners, too much lipstick and certainly no lady but she'd never let you down in a stand up knock down brawl.
hello i am a man and i bought 2 fragrances for my mom for her birthday and bought it blind ! ai have read your comments and looked at the notes and i must confess you helped me its a really nice perfume and my mother loved this one and loved the second one called Bijan DNA Femme (little better than rare gold)
Bought these two : Bijan DNA Femme
Avon Rare Gold
i had that once ages ago and i want to wear them every day...lol...love it.
One of the few fragrances from Avon that I like. It is nothing special, but a nice fragrance all the same. Another poster commented that it reminded her of Mackie by Bob Mackie...I have thought the same thing since the first time I smelled it. It is far better than Rare Pearls from Avon.
to me this is a very comforting scent it reminds me of the good time i spent with some friends, its just so warming and comforting.
I got this for a couple of quid in a charity shop and I'm glad I didn't fork out too much for it. It's a bit of an 'Amarige light' to me, but lacking the uniqueness of the former. I find it warm, wearable but a bit boring. My husband finds it 'too sweet' though he likes Dior Poison. I definately prefer rare pearls to this one.
I love this. It depends on my mood also. It turns VERY VERY SWEET on me!
I'm not usually a huge fan of the floral/floral fragrances. I prefer more depth and layers in scents, but this one is quite nice. The opening is a strong floral, but the dry down is much nicer/lighter. There are hints of citrus and orange blossom that do not supersede the floral scent. The citrus is really behind the scene in the opening. It reminds me of a really nice smelling Este'Lauder's "Beautiful". If you've read my review of Beautiful, you'll know I'm not a fan of that scent. This lends a little more youth to the heavy floral scent, but it is still not suitable for really young women. If you love florals, this one should be a winner for you. Floral, not offensive. Pretty and unusual thanks to the floral/ambery drydown.
I had this one and liked it for every day. It's a light smell and seems to fade way too soon. Loved the smell if only it would stick around longer.
I just received my UPS shipment of my Avon order, which included a set (bath, lotion, and purse size perfume) of Rare Gold. I find it lovely. It works well with my chemistry and I'm loving the warm floral scent. I just used a small spritz on the wrist and small spritz on the neck and that seemed to be just right. It's a heady scent so I could see how using too much may be headache inducing. I used a bit of the body lotion on my hands as well and was pleased to find it moisturizing and softening and not at all greasy. Nice quality. Of course, this campaign they're having the full size perfume included in the set for the same price instead of the purse size, which chaps my hide a bit, but oh well...overall, I don't regret the purchase and can see me using this up. Time will tell if I like it enough to reorder it, as I have with Rare Pearls and Timeless, which I keep stock of. I definitely get the comparison to Amarige - not identical, but in the same family for sure.
I find Rare Gold very similar to Mackie......
yeah, bees followed me when i wore this scent. still love the smell
it smells like peach or orange
I really like this scent from Avon, one of my favorites...The reason I probably like it so much is because it smells alot like another favorite of my Amarige.I like to use Rare Gold shimmer lotion with Amarige.
I first found rare gold in 2005 avon lady at work loved the sample bought the bottle and kept buying! I have 2 unopened and one on the dressing table! Also love rare pearls, I use the whole line of each scent to layer.
Wonderful smell, I feel pretty to wear it I even spray it on b4 bed to smell it to sleep. Love it. Its a keeper.
I really wanted to love this...but after the top notes reminding me of Giorgio(which I love),it went down-hill into something that smelled like cigarette smoke on polyester clothing. I'm not sure how it went that way on my skin. Maybe the aldehydes? Anyway, this is lovely for someone else, and you can tell it's very well crafted.
I kept seeing it in the Avon catalogue last year and it smelled great on the scratch 'n sniff circle. I bought it and and it was way stronger in real life than on paper. I wore it a few times and for some reason it just didn't feel right. Smells like something a lady in the 80s would wear to a cocktail party. Very aldehydic, heavy and ambient.
This is very classically feminine. A nice oriental. It doesn't smell expensive, it doesn't smell cheap either. It has a certain character in its class, and definitely better than most available Avon perfumes.
When I smell it on my friend I love it, after pregnancy I hate it so much
this scent is so so nice it smells so warm and fresh on my skin and lasts a long time as well
This is very bitter and chemical smelling on me. Maybe I got an old sample? I had to wash it off my wrists fast.
I first thought I could like it and bought a bottle. But on me the scent developed to heavy-headach-creating or even "stinky". It's strong and the first flowery impression turns into something too strong and "molesting" in my view.
Very feminine, bearable not too strong , it is my favorite perfume
Update:
Oh, I really dislike this scent. It's rich indeed and could be beautiful but has something similar to Giorgio and Red Door, a nausating strong note that makes it unbearable for me. On the other hand it is very nice first but after a few minutes it becomes a heavy, overly sweet, overwhelming vanilla-scent. It IS a quality product since it lasts and lasts but IMHO Rare Pearls is far the best in this range.
I thought I would love this one and ordered unsniffed but that was quite a mistake. It must be a very well-done classy perfume but it just doesn't smell good on my skin. Every time i wear it I feel somewhat depressed and OLD, however, I like and use many of the classics.
It smells heavy, heady, rich flowery and honey-like, after a while I get more of the vanilla, but it's nothing more than that. Nothing special, nothing alluring. "just" elegant and a timeless classic. It's not for my skin, anyway.
...what 'millan' said.....exactly.
Rare Gold is a rich one, the richest & best from Avon.
(I like Nature Millenaire too!)
This is my favorite from Avon . I say its my baby I just love it. It makes me feel so sexy and feminine. It last so long and the dry-down is to die for. I love it so much that I am on my 3rd bottle and I still have 3 backup bottles with lotion , shimmering
cream talc & body wash. It smells so expensive. I haven't felt this obsess with a perfume since I had Nature millionaire.
Mmm. this is a rich and warm flowery perfume .
its been sitting on my skin for a few hours now and this stuff i realy like . i wasent so shure about all the white flowers sins im not a very floral person , at list ihavent been . but this one whit the tuberose . ahh... honeylike warm lingering .
this is like a warm and cosy hug from a very dear friend .
A grown up and fresh perfume for the moments you want to feel uplifted and fresh. a daytime party , aswell as in the eavning . this i thinkl would be a fragrance for most ocations
like it

Oh no, this is so cheap so strong overflow fruit with an amber bomb which makes you smell very sexy (in that nowadays way of swollen lips and artificial hair)
I truly hate this fragrance. What a pity, though ! It lasts and lasts. I just sprayed it on my wrist and it survived the whole day, two showers and I felt it in my hair until I washed them the most properly way I could have done.
I don't find it elegant or charming at all, but maybe it's a good choice for smoky bars for a daring cat like Megan Fox et cetera. It could knock down all smells in the room.
Rare Gold is very-very feminine and elegant perfume. It kind of reminds me Diorissimo because they both have lily-of-the-valley note dominating. Plus always-gorgeous jasmine and other beautiful florals. Luxurious combination only for real women.
Missing notes in the profile above are:
- Melon
- Incense
So it is a complex perfume and you sure can smell that! GORGEOUS!
The bottle sort of reminded me of something that my Grandmother would keep on her vanity, but I was definitely pleased and surprised with the fragrance! I always get compliments when I wear it, and its beautiful :)
This is a real sparker and luxurious!!
WONDERFUL perfume!!
Thank you sooo much Sophi!!
(This review is for Eau de Perfume)
RARE GOLD starts with a beautiful opening of the classic floral aldehydes. The aldehydes are complimented by the opulent ylang-ylang and softened by the peach note. The scent is a great example of the soft and gentle aldehydes resembling the soft aldehydes in Chanel no 5, which I absolutely adore. The heart notes, however, do not turn powdery like some classical fragrances but stay floral and green with a bit of honey like sweetness. The jasmine and lily of the valley are most noticeable on my skin. I think the sweet honey like sweetness actually comes from the tuberose but it does not smell like a typical heady tuberose. It is like a slight sweetness, ephemeral and light. The base notes are mostly woody tones with the slight sweetness and hint of vanilla.
I am quite impressed with RARE GOLD. The well-done composition is cozy and pleasant to wear but there is also elegance and sophistication in this scent. It is very classy and the sillage and longevity are decent.
this is one of the florals i can bear as it is warm and rich enough to make the impression that i am wearing a perfume not just being in my mom's flower garden.
Don't stone me but it reminds me of J'adore. At least the feeling it evokes in me...
another good point that in this one the aldehydes are quite OK. All in all, good value for price :)
this smells similar to the fragrance they used to put on make-up..maybe thats why we feel its classy when people wear it, because people who used to wear make-up are the classy ones, but now a lot of them are the tacky ones.
warm and inviting, a treat to wear. it seems feminine and it is a lasting scent!!
imo, it has a warm, rich smell, almost like an oriental. too strong and flowery for me and then it just fades away into almost nothingness. not a fan.
great perfume.. feminine and rich but not too strong.love it!
Last month one of my relatives was wearing a lovely perfume and I thought to myself that it smellt classy and expensive. I asked her what it was and she told me, to my surprise, that it was Rare Gold. I saw she had it though in the body spray version so I am not sure if it is any different from the perfume. Anyway, I sprayed it on myself and it lasted for about 3 hours, which is pretty good for a body spray. In an attempt to describe it, I would say it is a mixture of honey, peach and orange. I was thinking that it reminded me of elements of YSL Cinema and Amarige D'Givenchy. It is a strong fragrance so if you are not a fan of stronger powerhouse perfumes it may not appeal to you but if you do, give this a try.
In my opinion, definitely Avons best ever. Certainly my favourite anyway! Even the bodyspray is long lasting and powerful! And like someone else mentioned, smells much more expensive than it is.
One of the beautiful Avon perfumes. Use once and love it very much. You can feel the nice smell from the first moment of useing. I like it.
Avon'un güzel parfümlerinden biri. Onu bir kere kullanın, çok seveceksiniz. İlk sürdüğün andan itibaren onun o güzel kokusunu hissedebiliyorsun. Öyle süre sonra güzelleşir, yok efendim biraz bekle ağırlığı gitsin olayı yok. Ondan hoşlandım.
I bought this yesterday and i'm glad i did it! It smells really expansive, very elegant and feminine, and I think every woman should have something like this in her wardrobe, a true classic. After I spray it on my wrist I feel very strong white flowers combined with aldehydes, a smell very similar with Chanel No5. After a while becomes a little bit fruity, but very rich and creamy thanks to honey note that I trully love in this! The base it's a little bit woody, but still creamy and sweet! I'm very glad that vanilla it's not overwhelming at all in this! My hubby loves it a lot too. Great price, great parfume, great job Avon! I wanna try Rare pearls also!
This is wonderful! Amber, ylang-ylang and woods come out beautifully. Very warm scent and would be great for any age group.
bought for something silly in Avon sale,as you do...the bottle is gorgeous and the scent is pretty nice too.One for work, not too overpowering.
I have the body spray of Rare Gold and it smells like peach, honey and jasmine. Not bad but nothing special, but as a body spray is perfect to put on clothes or after a warm shower ;)
I am 30 and have been wearin this for a few years. I love the floraly quality without being too powdery, for a change. Definitely a classic, in a grown up way all it's own. I agree it changes wit the seasons
I have Rare Pearls and I love it, so I thought I should buy Rare Gold as well -big mistake, I can't stand it. Horrible scent !
I was an Avon rep for years and tried everything- had a bottle of this as well. It's just gorgeous, warm and ambery- smells expensive too. Rare pearls did nothing for me but RG should be a classic
I liked Rare Gold when it first came out. It's a very pretty and bright floral. I would be careful about wearing it now though. It has enough strength to it that you would not want to wear it to work or anyplace where strong perfume isn't okay. It more of a retro perfume made before the lighter scents came into style. It's still one of Avons best and worth the price .
Rare Gold is a 'classic' kind of fragrance - a strong, sophisticated and elegant kind of fragrance. Rare Gold reminds me of perfumes like Estee Lauder's Beautiful and White Linen. I find it too heavy for the office use or for casual use. I normally prefer fruity florals but every now and then, I spray on some Rare Gold for that luxurious feeling.
I must be looking in the wrong place, as I can't find the civet listed anywhere, as mentioned in a previous review. Which note would be civet?
Just curious.
CIVET!
wow. i just got some genuine civet and for people who love this and think they don't like civet, they are mistaken.
i love the smell and combined with the white flowers this is a perfectly refined skankfest that in other hands would be too "edgy" and "niche"
i really do believe that because it's avon and the packaging, and because civet is such a particular small, this is an underrated magical fragrance.
Not something for someone born in the eighties. It could be argued that I, at 36, am too young for this perfume. But honestly, it's very perfumey and heavy and potently sweet in a not teenage, detergent-y or cloying migraine way.
I enjoy it, and it's certainly worth what I paid.
Abia astept sa se relansezeeeeeeee:X cred ca undeva in C14-15,16/2010 cel tarziu. In cazul in care e cnv interesat sa devina colaborator AVON,sau sa comande produse din brosura AVON ma poate gasii pe id-ul:fuufuu_a96
like i said this scent is the best .best for every season i love it
i smell peaches and cream here ,it is very beautiful rich and warm. it's a very comfotable scent for every season in the summer i smell fresh peach in this, fall i smell vanilla winter the wonderful warmth like a soft cashmere sweater anyone agree
Rare Gold has a really nice warm sweet dry down. I love a nice sandalwood-musk-vanilla dry down, with the vanilla being the least dominant. It is warm and sweet without everyone thinking, "Oh, you're wearing vanilla." I like that about it. BUT the opening notes smell cheap and artificial to me and I really didn't care for the first 30 minutes. You can't beat the price for it, though.
Too overbearing- I thought the white flowers got swallowed up by the aldehydes and base notes-
probably one of avons best frags, good for its price tag, best worn during the summer
sophisticated, but should be worn for more older people.
it can sometimes smell a bit grannyish. after having it for a few days i decided to give it up.
:/
I loved it! But as I am living in Romania, I can't find it anymore! I miss it!
Ilove this fragrance.I first smelled it on my aunt.It reminds me of her.witty, beautiful, pure, kind and an all round sexy confident woman.I have a lot of scents and sometimes i forget it but, when i pull it out of my perfume safe,I smile. Its a joy to ear.lasts forever, doesnt take much and dozens of compliments. If it cost more or came from an elite perfumery everyone would love it.take a chance if you like florals.
I would describe the smell as hot flowers with incense burning in the background.
My mum does avon and i found some perfume, i looked at the box and it said 'Rare Gold', i didnt recognise this perfume so i decided to smell it, i was really shocked when i smelt it, it was the most beautiful perfume i have actually smelt! I wear it everyday.xx Avon is Amazing!!!!
I read the reviews here and thought this must be a really good perfume. I sprayed it on my arm and was shocked --- I find it is very VERY strong, you would have to endure the journey from the beginning, even just sniffing it from the bottle gives me a headache, it is unbelievably intense to me, the base of my skull tightens and my temples pound. I really dont know how others find it pleasant I must be sensitive to something in it.
I used to be soooo obsessed with it! haven't seen it around for years though..
Honeysuckle, honeysuckle, and more honeysuckle! Too overpowering with honeysuckle for me although it smells great on anyone else but me! Lasts a long time too.
Avon's answer to Estee Lauder's Beautiful at a mere fraction of the cost.
it's a luxuriant scent and it goes on for hours and hours... I love it...
lan gevur oglu gevurlar ıcıkta türkçe konuşsanızda bizde anlasak günahmı olur
Avon doesn't always get it right. And truly, which perfume house does? All of them have some good scents and some bad. But when Avon gets it right, they REALLY get it right. The best scents from Avon are beautiful, long-lasting, and smell very expensive in spite of their affordable price. Rare Gold is one of these scents.
Any fan of florals will want to try this one, but Oriental fans might find something to love here, too. Rare Gold starts out with lush tropical white flowers and sweet nectar. It stays fresh and true all day long (I've been wearing my sample for almost 12 hours now and I can still smell it), and gradually fades to a beautiful vanilla-amber-musk base. I'm smitten!
I'm so glad I bought this! I bought it unsniffed, but it was only about ten bucks. What a deal! When I sprayed it on, my initial reaction was WOW gardenia! Luckily I like gardenia. The drydown reins some of in to a vanilla-ish, soft floral. Very elegant and uplifting. This would be a great winter time fragrance...and it lasts quite a while. Rare Gold smells A LOT like Faith Hill's premiere perfume that just came out. If you like it, save yourself a few bucks and get the Rare Gold instead. Definitely one of Avon's best, possibly THE best. Love it!
I wish the perfumiers currently inflicting all those dull, mediocre fruity-florals on us would take a good whiff of this gorgeous concoction - THIS is a stunning fruity-floral, rich, elegant, luxurious, wonderfully feminine and incredibly long-lasting. The entire 'Rare' range by Avon is fantastic, and this is no exception. Amazing scent and amazing value for money.
I normaly hate florals but this one is different. It smells rich and feminine.A very pretty girl scent as i call it.It reminds me a bit of chloe narcisse but i find chloe a bit cloying and kinda oldfashion. But this is softer and and slightly sweeter.Pure luxury,i think i wanna buy it sometime..
I like this one, I always seem to go back to it. I have also got Rare Sapphires (blue top) - does anyone else have this? I really like it, it's very unusual.
Rare Gold is quite a fresh floral fragrance which has warm sweet undertones. The fragrance has great staying power considering it is relatively cheap to buy, most of the time Avon fragrances don't have particularly good staying power, but this one has a staying power of approximately 12 ours or so before needing reapplied. The fragrance is quite strong and sweet when first applied but it soon dies down into a warm and seductive fragrance.
Such a disappointment! An oriental -and yes- spicy perfume which is the most heavy and nauseating one after the edp Opium!...All the spices (no one shows on the table, i know)you could imagine together on a heavy base!...I think ylang ylang has a huge role of this feeling and musk and amber together too...
Rare pearls was a perfume which i used with pleasure and depending on its trust i've bought it but this was a very bad experiment for me...
i love this perfume it is long lasting it's smell is very rich.By wearing this perfume i feel good.
I first smelled Rare Gold as a teenager and I won't lie, I didn't like it. I thought it was too strong and it gave me a headache. Well, I'm an adult now and I just recently tried it again, and I've definitely changed my mind about it's smell now. When it opens up it's still very strong. You get a combination of the floral fruity together, which is richly pungent. The dry down is similar, but the smell isn't overpowering. I detect a beautifully warm mix of fruity-floral-sweetness. Altogether it's a very lovely fragrance and has very good staying power. Rare Gold is classic and modern and definitely for mature women. Ideal for the fall.
Initially I purchased this in the 99 cent shimmering body powder to get a feel for it. I am impressed by it's warm, glowing, sweet oppulence. My 5 yr. old at the time also fell in love with it, and begged with excited giggles to use it after her bath. It's regal, wear it with confidence.
I know about a very similar perfume like this and thats Valentino: Rock&Rose.
I think it's one of the best by Avon. It makes people ask you what you wear.
I think Rare Pearls are not nearly as good as Rare Gold.
strong,strong,strong.......and longlasting,pergamot makes it unique.
Perfume is a very interesting and intrigantan.Just now is the right time for him .When this pleasant autumn warmth frees slowly and then come up with the full feeling.Sweet as sweet autumn fruits.
I found this by chance a few years back - after a long hunt I found a second bottle. Now I've found it on this site :o) So I'm very happy! The is my favourite all time perfume! If you haven't tried it - I heartily recommend that you do!
One of the greatest perfumes for women Avon ever launched. A perfume for a true LADY.
when i put it i feel that i was in old ages of time i didn't like it its nice between women in 25 ages not 4 teens
last year it was my favorite and i bought many bottles then i've changed it but i think that i miss it now but the only problem is that it smells a lil bit old as in 80's
I totally agree with MondeoGirl, This fragrance is one of the most unforgottable Avon fragrances.
It's spicy strong & confident. The gold color of the juice suits the perfume personality very well.
This frangrance is very rich, it smells very fancy and feminine. Not too strong, but lasts very well.
Rich, opulent and luxurious. You will believe you're wearing a much more expensive scent.
PURE LUXURY!!! it wraps u in the most precius metal of the world! Rare Gold is by far one of the most fabulous parfums ever created. great notes, long lasting, pure feminity and luxury! the old bottle with the fan shaped top was really pretty but this new top design is cute too! and the most important the fragrance is still the same!!!! u gonna love it try it!
i'll recommend to try it too Rare Pearls.
it was my first 'real' perfume and i adore it.i hope when i buy it next it won't be changed as they say. very classic and elegant.
I love this perfume, i bought it several times... i'm looking for perfumes similar to this...does anyone know???
I wore the original Rare Gold when I first met my DH & he still loves it. When Avon changed the bottle style, I think they changed something in this, because it now smells different (not near as good). The original (the one with the fan shaped top) was very nice. The honey notes really came out on my skin as in the summer honey bees would buzz around my head LOL (not joking)they love this stuff!.
