So this is love...
I bought a bottle of Black Walnut online, blind, because I liked the name and it was cheap enough to take the risk. Opened my new bottle (great packaging by the way) and sprayed a sample on the back of my hand, paused a moment to recap the bottle, then inhaled the gentle smoke drifting skywards. Wow! Oh wow! Oh wow! Put my nose down against my wrist and nuzzled in amongst the leaves. Sanctuary.
I close my eyes and follow the scent trail.
I feel like some sort of small woodland animal, wet fur, sleek, bright eyed, skittering along a riverbank, before diving into my deep, dark, cosy burrow.
Just call me Mole. Just call me Ratty.
This is the English countryside in autumn, trees bare black against an electric blue cloudless sky, sun bright but cold, the incense of gently steaming bonfires floats on the still air, evidence of unseen labour quietly keeping everything in neat order. 'England, forever England' as described in 'The Wind in the Willows' . This is a timeless countryside, not so far removed from Middle Earth, imagined into being in the comfort of an Edwardian gentleman's club amidst leather chairs, brandy, cigars.
If you've never read Wind in the Willows, try it. It is a classic - it works on many levels so it is suitable for children and adults. Full of fable, adventure, homoeroticism, and mysticism.
Black Walnut is how I in 2013 imagine the smell of Wind in the Willows and the Edwardian masculinity it celebrates.
Fragrance as literary criticism. Intelligent perfume?! I had no idea that was possible.
This is not a sexy fragrance unless you find intelligence erotic and then it captivates. I think you need to pick up on the allusions and then it charms.
I am in love with this smell.
حالا که دو بار استفاده کردم بنظرم خیلی سن بالاست
مثل عطری که این دکترهای سن بالای کرواتی میزنن
من خودم 213000 تومن خریدم
اگه کسی خواست ، 100000 تومن میفروشم

I tested 3 fragrances in the banana republic official outlet, Black Walnut, Slate and Cordovan.
Black Walnut is not what I expected.it is sweet oriental fragrance definitely woody but not strong one very calm and subtle with below average projection and longevity.
For me its not the best but its just an ok fragrance.
Bottle and packaging is great
I give it 6.5 out of 10.
Better than you would think. This won the FIFI 2007 best fragrance award. I like it and is one of the only colognes that I've gotton unsolicited compliments on.
This sweet, unique woody scent reminds me of Japanese incense. Calm and smiley great!
Decent gourmand, unique, and stands out from the dozens of other designers out there.
Girl Review :
feel like you walk in forest that just rain :) when i smell it i can feel pure wood on me ; but when it on my skin , its just stay only 1-2 hours
This reminds me of Jacques Bogart only in it's tobacco note, because it is similar however this is so much better, again it would be hard to find. But the tobacco note in this is so much better than most tobacco notes I've smelled. I love tobacco but i find a lot of tobacco notes i colognes to be a little nauseating, this is just so well done, one of the best I've ever found. I also love the blending especially its simple blend with cognac its just a little boozy. I expected the combination to be a little too "men's club", however, it was a much warmer scent while maintaing its masculinity.
Bottom Line: It is a great scent, a real gem, however, like the best gems it's hard to find. One of the best tobacco's i've ever smelled while still being overtly tobacco without being an excessively or overtly masculine while still being strongly grounded as a refined gentleman's scent.
Ahh..what a genuine good stuff we have here!
It's really impressive this one.
Cognac + Cedar is really getting me!
It settles to cognac/tobaco combination that makes you feel enojoying the aura around you!
Smells like a wooden room where cognac is saved..a bit humid..woody..deep..& relaxing!
Amazing!

The only down side..you won't easily find it! :(
Love this one & very woody fragrance, but I have to be in the right mood to wear it.
I find the notes in this so well blended,no one note dominates here.of cos I was intrigued by just the three notes that supposedly make up this fragrance.not sure what accounts for the sublime sweetness though.
I have no problems with longevity at all.I can still smell it even after 8hours.I must admit I achieved that on a cool rainy day so cant vouch for that in all seasons.but I can see it as being ideal for evening wear and on cold days and clearly will fit a mature man.Given it's elegance, mellow nature and slight sweeness women can -and I mean WOMEN-can easily pull this off without raising curious eyebrows
Not tried all from this house but I can see this as a very good one from banana republic.well done!
Brilliant. Pure class and style in an affordable package. Love this one.
Interesting; yesterday I was thinking why no one make fragrances out of walnut leaf that is seductively aromatic and today I found this marvel by accident.
Black Walnut scents exactly on walnut leaf accord mixed with sweet cognac woodsy notes although walnut's not listed above.
BW is an absolutely modern composition without any vintage hint with young mood and casual tendency.
Unfortunately the lasting power is the very drawback although supposed to be long lasting because of cognac in the blend.
On my skin
Top : Fresh-grass feel, with tobacco notes in it, kind of reminds on some of those fresh aquatic fragrances. Woody at the same time. There is some alcohol note in it, but I am not sure, it is kind of muted on me.
Middle: The top surprises me. It jumps out more when it settles down on my skin. It becomes more fresh, louder and pleasant, with some grassy scent popping out.
Base: Sweet, grassy scent, with some ambery, sweet woody vibe.
Good projection.
LADY KILLER!
100% masculine scent =)
BUY! This is really an under rated fragrance. It takes fresh scent to the next level.
3 sprays max. 1 on the neck, 2 on each arm.
My rating (base on 5 stars)
Scent: 4 (Nice).
Sillage: 4 (good projection).
Time length: 3 (6-8 hours).
Occasion: 4 (work scent, going out scent, dating scent).
Overall base on mathematics: 3.75/5
Dark horse fragrance.
My first positive response...few days back at work, my boss (female, married with kids and very attractive) literally was grinding into me when we were standing beside each other reviewing some documents! A few minutes later she suddenly went "You smell really nice" and asked me what I was wearing....
I just got my 100ml bottle of BR’s Black Walnut 2days ago….and folks I’m LOVING it! This was a “blind buy” because I thought you can’t go wrong with the notes of Cognac, Cedarwood and Tobacco. I was right! I would call this a sublime and elegant woody scent. Suits the 25-35 yrs age group. The frag cycles through the Cognac and Cedarwood (reminds me of “pencil shavings”) notes in the first 3hours and then settles into the lovely Tobacco drydown. Its not loud at all and is close to the skin. I could sniff it on my wrist about 6-7 hrs after the first spray. Projection and sillage are weak to average. It comes in a classy black wooden box with magnetic edges and a lovely petite but sturdy bottle. The spritzer could’ve been better though. On the whole I'm very happy with this purchase. (My last purchase was Guerlain's L'Instant Pour Homme EDT).
Black Walnut is a frag for the true connoisseur i.e- for pure self satisfaction as opposed to the “hey check me out” desperado!! Understated class.
This can definitely be classed as a unisex fragrance. It is lightly woody, lightly spicy, only a tiny hint of sweetness which is welcome otherwise it would be very linear. Affordable and not your run-of-the-mill masculine scent. Recommended for mature people.
Dark and modern woody scent; almost burnt but not bitter. It's definitely spicy and kinda dry but not very strong. Sweetness is very little to none and a bit boozy too. Mature men could wear this but young ones may have a hard time pulling this off. It's perfect gift for the father's day.
it was cheap and cheerful when I bought it. great for a fragrance to wear when you are running to the local to pick up milk. Its gone by the time the cereal has been eaten but at least you weren't naked when you hit the milk bar and you it won't make any difference to the next choice of the day.
This is a suble elegant fragrance but
unfortunily does not last on my skin
but neverless i like it. it starts with
semi-sweet cognac a wisp of tabacco and
the drydown of sharp ceder; i love the clean lines from this flacon and the
box its self reminds me of an black
lacquered oriental style box where you
put your tabacco in.
my opinions about this fragrance conjoures up two sayings
the singer not the song & the crakerjacks without the prize
it offers us it with it's elegant packaging but the scent sells short.
without the prize
Dark spicy wood is the essence of BLACK WALNUT, a relatively linear Banana Republic fragrance marketed to men, but which is entirely suitable for women as well. Unfortunately, the staying power and sillage are not so great, but this is an edt, not an edp.
Although BLACK WALNUT is not sweet, I find it delicious all the same. Now that I look at the notes, it must be the combination of the cognac and the tobacco--feels like pipe, not cigar or cigarette--that accounts for the delectable, rich and enticing quality of this warm woody fragrance. Yum! I may have to buy a large bottle to douse myself in!
My husband bought a bottle last winter and I really adored it.
First, I have to say that the presentation of the perfume is really gorgeous, a really good quality box and bottle with an elegant design. Well , perhaps thats the less important for a perfume lover but I just wanted to say it.
When I smelled the fragrance, I was really shocked.. It reminded me a particular place in my grandparents house. They had an enormous living room an in a part of it there was a wooden and glass case where my grandfather kept his whiskeys, cognacs and licuors, and some whiskey glasses ... When I opened the glass doors of this furniture I could smell that gorgeous mixture of wood , whiskey , cognac , and licuor...well, thats the smell of this incredible perfume. I just love to smell it on my husband, and .. I decided to try it on myself too... guess what... it is really amazing on me too.. so elegant and gorgeous.. I really love it... a perfect men perfumes and a great perfume for dare women.
yes it s good, but for me it s just a softer version of tommy bahama,,, and oh, where is lasting power?
Very, very woody fragrance, but I have to be in the right mood to wear it. Sometimes no other scent will do for me, though. It doesn't take much, either...
I use this as a woman's perfume and love love love it. It is not strong, overly masculine, and is a perfect light woodsy scent for day wear. Seems to have lasting power, though not too strong.
I knew it by chance and I bought it
inmediately. It's great. The woodden box is pure luxury!
I LOVE THIS AND I USE EVERY DAY.
