Though mimosa is highly appreciated by florists for its fresh cheerful touch, very few perfumers- except Caron’s- have ever dared to take the risk of building a perfume around it. Overwhelming shades of sweet mimosa, floral and fruity blackcurrant. Farnesiana was launched in 1947. The nose behind this fragrance is Michel Morsetti.
Mimosa and leathery violet, powder and almondy heliotrope dominate in the beginning, but this EdP quickly dries down into a realistic, non-sweet rendition of yellow mimosa. It’s a beautiful scent that reminds me of springtime in the south of France, when the mimosas bloom. After an hour or two the base of vanilla and white musk becomes prominent. Toward the very end, a little sandalwood appears.
Sillage is moderate. I love the mimosa opening, and the drydown is pleasant to have lingering during the rest of the day. On skin, it lasts at least 6-8 hours. Farnesiana begins as a lovely, cheerful spring-like powdery floral scent that gradually becomes a warm gourmand-ish musky one. I like it very much, and would enjoy having a decant and wearing it on occasion.
For all of the love I've heaped on Caron I have never circled around to Farnesiana before. Yes I know this is one of their torch bearers, but I've always been afraid of that hay note. Finally I tossed it onto an order from TPC, so here is my review.
The hay note is note is present, wearing on my skin like a wet dollop of play dough. Not the most exciting opening, and it lasts throughout which is unfortunate. I also get Sandalwood, but it is 'Caron Sandalwood' and you'd have to be a fan of the house to know what I'm talking about.
Edit: Oops, I bought. Hehe. The almond/vanilla mix here was too tantalizing and the more I wore it the more I fell in love. This is nothing, nothing like you will find anywhere else. (I bought the EDP Vintage)
Allow me to introduce you to my new friend, Madame Farnesiana- she is the daughter of Madame L'Heure Bleue, the mother of Madame Champs d'Elysees, and the grandmother of Mademoiselles Mimosa por Moi and Kenzo Summer!
This fragrance is a warm, creamy-powdery mimosa with sensual accents of black currant jam. It has subtle depth and incredible longevity, and an enveloping quality that reminds me of Aimez-Moi, another lovely fragrance from the House of Caron.
Highly recommended!
(Pure Parfum Review)
This is an absolutely fascinating mimosa scent, its powdery, dark and resinous.
Nothing smell like Farnesiana, it's a very unusual scent.
Farnesiana and l'heure bleue share this sweet waxy vintage feeling that I like.
On me, it is soft and close to the skin and last a lot.
Once I get over the artificial like top notes, this fragrance is quite creamy and sweet. The mimosa and sandalwood make a very distinct impression, and the base notes are sexy. Very long lasting.
There are many other notes involved than just the two of black currant and mimose. I tested this scent, and it's pungent. It's complex, clangy, and discordant to my nose, but something drew me to sniff my testing spot on my arm over and over again, kind of like when one is watching a horror movie, and it's so gruesome that it's scary, but so horrificly creative you are eyes are fixed and your mind so drawn...There seemed to be some metal notes, some notes of rotting meat, and then all the flowers, dancing and prancing for hours. The scent seemed to shift and move in waves while wearing it, so mysterious and curious to me..The mimose had all of it's wonderful characteristics...and it had a dark side too, something decaying, wet, mossy, something perhaps "indolic" as people say about jasmine. I absolutely hated it, but, I still obsess about perhaps someday owning a very small decant.
