I wore it in the 80's and loved it very much. In those days, it had no wood cap but a green plastic one, (exactly the same than Monsieur Carven, but in green). I don't know if it was the original 1957 version without any change, but it was excellent, it had a great class. I didn't smell the new version but I'm afraid, and maybe I should forbear !
I got a bottle with the wooden cap for my husband but he is NOT going to see it as I fell in love . It's light but lovely.
I love this, natural and calming it stays with me all day, but with restrained and polite conversation-it is not a shouter. And it doesn't smell like a chemical experiment. It leaves a clean, fresh wake and garners compliments. If grassy soap with a top dressing of citrus is your idea of perfume heaven (it's mine) then try this-you will love it.
It's nice - leaves a soft woody / vetiver smell on the skin not strong but lasts quite a while. The bottle with the wood top is a more earthy scent and has more character - it's a better smell as Fotolux says below
Well I found a bottle like the picture with a wooden cap.
This one I really like, very soapy in the drydown, lemony and nice wood. Very nice.
I find obvious similarities in YSL Pour Homme compared with this but this seems much more natural. The longevity isn´t quite as long, but good enough.
Edit: If you like soapy bitter vetiver, this could be the one. This is one of my absolute favs, extremely manly.
This new version of Vetyver is really a joke. These reformulations that most of the companies are doing with these old great colognes will of course strike back.
Maybe they are ok if costing $2-3, not more.
If you see the bottle as pictured, grab it. But, this bottle is no longer in production and the newer bottle is oval with a metal cap. Moreover, the formula has been altered. The newer scent is sweeter and less complex - a major disappointment. Carven's Vetiver (at least the modern version): the vetiver is light, the citrus topnotes (which look strong fro the pyramid) weak and fleeting, and the remaining notes suitably blended into an amorphous, dull base. Why do fragrance companies do this? Do they think we will not perceive the difference?
