There is no way to describe this in the context of other fragrances. It is dynamic and it does not smell like anything else. The bitter juniper-lemony-anisic opening, the olive green transitions, the astringent floral freshness, the fougere-y character paired with the soapy chypre moments that catch you by surprise, the golden glow of dried animalic amber honey in the base... it's as though the best of everything under the Lauder (and Aramis) sun were put into this and tweaked for males. Perfect.
This review is for the current formulation 2012
Very simply put an overly synthetic cheap attempt at what Boucheron EDP has done so well.
It was obvious from the first whiff. I bet the vintage juice was a little more interesting but the one out now is fool's gold.

I'm reminded of this for a couple reasons. Foremost, I have a bottle and hadn't yet reviewed it on Fragrantica -- thought I did, not sure how I missed it, but oh well. Secondly, another scent reminded me of it today: Quelques Fleurs Original, surprisingly enough.
This is definitely a mid-80's power bomb, very elegant and well-composed, very much a day fragrance, more refined as for a business setting. This isn't the sort of scent one would call "sexy" by current standards as much as they'd say it carries a sense of very formal and classic style. The opening is a series of very bright green notes and the headiness of juniper and clary sage. The middle is pure, classic fougere in every sense of the word: Rose, carnation, jasmine. None overpowering, none trying to out-do the other. The base is a great amber/woody/musk combination, the hint of vanilla just present enough but not shouting itself above the other elements. One word: Classic. This is gentlemanly refinement.
Now to why Quelques Fleurs. My wife sprayed Quelques Fleurs on earlier in the day, and I kept smelling it off in the background while we were shopping. I finally smelled myself, recognizing the aroma but not why, then I said "Something smells very familiar". I realized it was her fragrance, and I said, "I need to show you Lauder for Men when we get home." We tested it, she smelled it, and concluded, "You're right, it's a man's version of Quelques Fleurs!" Take our Quelques' florals, add more greenery to the opening, and change some of the note emphasis around and you've achieved Lauder. They're just close enough for confusion unless you smell the two side-by-side.
Nonetheless, someone else nailed it when he said "OLD SCHOOL". It is. That isn't necessarily a bad thing, but this isn't for someone in the under-45 crowd to toy with as they won't understand how to wield its power without marinating in it. It fits squarely in the space between middle-age and "The Geritol Set". It's brilliant stuff.
This is a time machine indeed! When i smell Lauder for men it brings me back to my childhood late 80s-big 90s.I think at that time everything and everybody were wrapped in it!Remember autumn,drizzling...my mom is at the kitchen making dinner,my dad coming back from work, taking off his coat, hat and woolen scarf...and in a moment the whole living room started getting full of something pure and truly masculine aroma...the feeling of completeness and secure were brought back home! And i was rushing towards my dad, embracing him so tight and and screaming so loudly:"Dad`s come!Everybody`s home!"
Ummmmmm,i love it!

Lauder for Men ... feel your self
oh yeah. wanna feel like a king, this is it. not very common coz common people wear 212's,coolwater's,polo's,azzaro,. emperors and gods wear this. very royal. masterpiece. a close second is boss no 1. go get lauder and start your own harem. oh yeaaaah, awesome
A typically smart and category-merging fragrance from Lauder.
Gorgeous start with a bright citrus tone that transitions comfortably to the strong green spirit connecting the top to the heartnotes (galbanum, juniper, clary sage.) It’s a beautiful synergy, and wonderfully constructed to allow you to continue to make out the individual notes. I’m a huge fan of clary sage oil and I just found myself giggling at how clear its voice was in this fragrance.
By the heart of Lauder for Men, the florals rise fully to the surface. Maybe jasmine, and a sharp carnation, but muget. Muguet! Who thought of putting that odd combination of delicacy and potency that the muget conveys in the middle of this potent chypre née fougère? Brilliant move! The heavy, almost waxy floral quality that muguet imparts is the ideal piece to transform the heart slowly to a woody/tobacco base.
People call this a brute, a Masculine Power Frag, a knuckle-dragger? Wow, I know my gender sensors might be calibrated differently than most, but I find Lauder a wonderfully assured, long-lasting fragrance that is ultimately a floral chypre that could easily be worn within current American gender norms by both men and women.
Lauder for Men reminds me that while Estée Lauder is principally known for its feminine fragrances, to my mind, their best fragrances are the Lauder/Aramis masculines.
I've got 3.4 oz bottle of this used a few times. If anyone has anything they want to trade send me a message. I will send a pic of the bottle if you would like.
Lauder Fer Men sits somewhere between a spicy fougere and a citric chypre. At a first sniff it could be easily dismissed as its classic structure may brings to mind of many fragrances of the same genre/period, but if you go deeper you'll discover an outstanding composition that, through the usual chrisms of the 80's powerhose style, is able to create its own language made of floral patterns, green notes and slight animalic nuances. An overall aromatic aspect is clearly reamrkable throughout the fragrance evolution and reaches the top of its relevance when the green tobacco note starts to play.
Overall Lauder for Men is a fragrance that moves in two different territories for several aspects: It's strong and bold as an 80's powerhouse but at the same time takes the distance from the most typical compositions of the genre by introducing a few feminine elements in its structure (manily the florals). It settles halfaway between the american masculine style and the european taste (vanilla in the base). It's classified (and to me also smells) as a spicy fougere but it also has many characteristic of a chypre. A great composition.
Be careful with dosage as Lauder For Men can easily turn into Louder For Men.

Note: Thanks Gypsy Parfumista!
This is not like Sung Homme or Quorum. It has some similar notes but it's much more refined and subtle, to the point that I don't think it makes sense to compare them. There is definitely a green tint to it, but overall it's a good example of a highly blended fragrance that does not come across as a "blob." Interestingly, it's also got a "cool" quality that none of the other reviews I've read (here, at BN, and elsewhere) mention. Overall, I'd say anyone can wear this for any occasion, but that it's socially more in line with the older crowd, and for business/school/religious gathering/formal event. Also note that the atomizer on my bottle is very fine, so if that's true for yours as well, you may have to spray more than usual. If you want "old school" without the lavender overload, animalic stench (I'm looking at you, Kouros), etc. I can't think of a better choice (and I'm sampled many if not most of the "80s power frags" for men). I've read people describe this in many ways (fougere, chypre, etc.), but it's got a base that is subtle and well blended, and the opening is fresh and green. For example, one reviewer at BN mentioned Versace l'Homme, but that one has a really strong patchouli/wood/amber base that feels like my sinuses are being bludgeoned. Lauder for Men is like a breath of fresh air by comparison. As one reviewer said on BN, this is closest to a refined version of Coriolan (when you get to the base).
Reaction from the ladies is "WOW, what are you wearing". This is a very stylish, distinguished and sexy contemporary fragrance. My wife loves it. One of my all time American favorites.
It is my signature fragrance. God bless Estee Lauder
What an amazing fougere this baby is!!
In good company with Quorum, Polo, Sung Homme and Azzaro Pour Homme...this scent is herbs, herbs, herbs. Juniper, galbanum, sage and anise...does it get any greener than this?! The florals in the heart are like dried pressed flowers in an ancient book, they have very dry, almost crisp feel. Carnation really shines in this one!! The typical 80s powerhouse scent finish is the obligatory oakmoss, amber and very animalic musk along with oriental notes and very dry elegant woods. This could just as easily been called "Dark Forest" or "Woodland Dream"; as it has the feel of cool shady boughs, faded flowers and woods and mosses galore. Lauder reminds me of a pressed and dry-cleaned Aramis 900. This is something you may not NEED, if you have any of the other 70s/80s scents listed above, but I think it is worth having. It is less powerful than Sung Homme, drier than Quorum, less leathery than APH, far less intense than Polo (Green) and all things considered: a classic!
Sillage: great
Longevity: very good
Overall: 3.75/5
Originally, I was dying to smell this. When I did I said: "Oh, another green eighties scent...", and moved on to something a little more modern; but on sampling this again, I believe that I like it better than Pleasures for men...though that would be a difficult choice if I had to choose just one (God forbid!)...
;-)
My dad has this, and I gagged when I first smelled this. So old school, though it's suitable for his age. For me, it smells somewhat oriental and old. Reminds me of black and white movies.
I think its perfect female counterpart would be the original Lancome's Tresor.
A very formal fragrance, that as in the case of all fougeres, has very strong topnotes. I can't comment on the notes, except that its formality is akin to that of Chanel pour Monsieur Concentree and Tiffany for Men. I regard it as a classic, and as such, right for those into traditional, serious, formal scents.
I wear this daily. I find it to be optimistic without being naive. Flowery and manly at the same time. 5 star scent.
An absolutely lovely and classic men's fragrance. The notes in this are crisp, limpid and well-integrated. Wear this and you will always smell masculine, sophisticated and positively fragrant. Metropolis was the other "masterpiece" fragrance for men from Lauder. That beauty was discontinued, unfortunately.
Smells like something you wear walking down the street, while "Funky Nassau" plays in the background. OLD SCHOOL. This is ultimately a GREEN fragrance, and extremely powerful. The best way to wear this is to spray it 1 time, and try spreading it out as much as you possibly can. The notes are much too sharp to lay puddled all in one place. Use cautiously to avoid killing plants. Attempting to wear this during the summer time, may cause a radioactive blast. Cool evenings are where this fragrance lives, and lives loudly.
this has been in my ritual since i first layed eyes on the woman that became my wife 23 years ago.it was october 1986,during las fiestas patronales here in puerto rico.i winked at her she winked back,i said hola, and she said i smelled great! very unique scent, floral in a masculine way.ciao1
What an awesome fragrance!got it after sampling it during my Europe tour last year,it is something that our Maharajas & Emperors wore during their reign. The dominating rose is welcome with it's sophistication, three whiffs are enough for the entire evening, just love this one.
I am young, was one of my first fragrances and still today remains the benchmark for woody fragrances.
I wear it in winter and special occasions, it lasts a good 6-9 hours on me, im not going into detail of the smell, but it smells good all the time.
Its a classic, the other day i had it on, i gave a female friend a hug, and she said she didn't want to leave.
Vanilla is clearly present, and so is the rose. Im still searching for something better...
One of the most luxurious colognes I've ever owned. I like to wear it during fall. I always put it aside after a couple of days because then I find the rose to become to dominant.
One of the best fragrances I have ever worn, very unique. Nobody would say what you have on....
I think Lauder is very similar to Youth Dew for women. Which in my opinion is awesome...I love the smell and think it is very classy...You can tell there is rose, oakmoss, and patchouli. What a great fragrance for someone who likes to be different.
