Lauder for Men is a genuine classic men's fragrance that I would put in the same class as 'Grey Flannel', albeit, this composition delivers different olfactory outcomes to Geoffrey Beene's 70s masterpiece.

In contrast to the prevailing early-80s 'BIG' fragrances such as Kouros; Devin; Quorum; Oscar de La Renta, together with the next wave of late-80s superstars including Jazz, Xeryus, and Fahrenheit, Lauder for Men sits in the middle of that decade's men's perfume see-saw. Moreover, in my opinion, it has not really dated in the ways in which those other iconic and wonderful fragrances have.

Similar to Grey Flannel, this fragrance mostly skips any traditional citrus top chords and, instead, thrives on the floral elements in its heart - without the huge violet note central to Grey Flannel. The result is unequivocally masculine: a robust, aromatic, fresh, clean and bright effect, that avoids any feminine floral trajectory.

It's not too 'fougerey' compared to the 2 YSL scents, and it has more subtlty than its door-opening neighbour, Xeryus. It also steers away from the heavy Leather based fragrances that dominated the first half of the 80s, yet it leaves an exquisite trail of bass-notes that not only last for ever, but are also deliciously laced with oakmoss that lingers and lingers.

This is a timeless, massively underrated and classy fragrance that is sophisticated, smart and subtle enough to wear to the office, or going out somewhere special in the evening. This is not an up-to-the-minute, trendy, GQ-zeitgeist fragrance, and will probably appeal to the more mature person. However, Lauder for Men is far from out of place in 2009 as, in contrast to Kouros, Fahrenheit et al., it left less of a signature on the wall of the 80s era. Indeed, rather like its classic unmarked bottle, Lauder for Men kind of glides along like an old Maseratti: there's no need to prove how much horse-power the car has: it's simply there if you want it! Classic and delightful!

I think Lauder is very similar to Youth Dew for women. Which in my opinion is awesome...I love the smell and think it is very classy...You can tell there is rose, oakmoss, and patchouli. What a great fragrance for someone who likes to be different.
