This is the first perfume for men by Gianfranco Ferre, the designer who reflects the character and the style of a man. It is free, strong, universal, emotional and modern. This is a classic perfume of a citrus, woody and chypre group. The top notes start with elegant and high class note of Sicilian lemon, softened with relaxing notes of exotic trees of Provance and finally ends with sensual amber and sharp vetiver. Gianfranco Ferre for Man was launched in 1986.

I try to avoid top notes so keep that in mind. This review is for the all black bottle (not the one pictured). I also have the vintage one with gold glass, but I have yet to give it a normal wearing. There are two main facets to this fragrance. One is a soft, smooth fougere (due to orris and amber?), and the other is a a "dark" accord featuring leather, etc. that is quite sweet. It seems like it should be richer/fuller than it is, so I look forward to seeing of the vintage one is (I'll update when I do). There is no strong wood note and it has an almost gourmand quality. Projection ("sillage") seems just right (not too strong) and longevity is excellent.
UPDATE: I'm sampling from the original bottle today (gold glass, not glass painted black, which seems to be the new one). The sweet, almost candy-like fougere is not present. Overall, this is very subtle, though complex. It's so smooth for a fougere of this era that it's hard to believe! Because of this, I think of the original as an aficionado fragrance, because I don't know if anyone else can appreciate it. The "old school" guys might find it weak whereas the aquatic/'fresh" crowd probably won't like it. It's something special to me, perhaps because it reminds me of the balance and subtlety of Patou Pour Homme. The new one has qualities that I like as well, but it's certainly not subtle, and instead of balance, it offers a nice counterpoint (sweet fougere versus "deep"/"dark" notes).

This is an EXTREMELY sophisticated fragrance. Unlike most typical powerhouse scents, this is not bold. It is very restrained, like saying more with silence than with words.
It is the only chypre perfume that I own. Even though many of my perfumes contain patchouli, in none of them is it so evident as in this one. This scent is absolutely irrelevant for the popular tastes of today.
When I think of all the Guilties, Sahariennes, and 1 Millions, I really become sad. It is like these really need an apology in the face of perfumes like this one.
GF for Man is in all probability one of the last examples of a perfume that you could not pick to wear according to your mood, like most people would do today. Rather, you had to have the corresponding behaviour, in order to wear this with dignity.
A prince among Ferre stuff.
This is dry as a desert, aromatic as flower shop, and chypre as nostalgic movies!
Just from the opening a chypre mood appears after a deep dark woody sharp and dry theme and makes it ultra-chic and awesome. It's not something ordinary and casual as rest of Ferre perfumes, extremely smart and handsome style is needed. Fro the middle it turns to soapy, dusty and more deep scent.
Even among classic and vintage perfumes, this one is something strange and distinguished. No hint of sweetness and waxiness, all it presents is a dark and bitter blackness which smells hyper-luxury.
I blind bought a 125ml bottle of Ferre For Man just because a very good friend of mine (did I say Lana Lool?) was absolutely enthusiastic about this fragrance and as I hold in high regard this man (for his countless values) I went for this purchase with no esitation.
I've to admit it took a while for me to fully appreciate this composition as the opening notes (mainly bergamot and lavender) are not among the best examples of a "catchy opening". They're kind of edgy and too acidic but fortunately they quicly evolve into an amazing fougère made of woods, leather, tobacco, vetiver and floral patterns. Elegant, refined but absolutely not affected as it gathers together more than a single aspect of the 80's powerhouse fragrances.
As a matter of fact, Ferre For Man rapidly became one of my favourite fragrance in the vintage designer's range being among the best creation of that time. Great lasting power, good sillage, remarkable personality. Quality stuff. A great all-rounder, an all time favourite.
Rating: 8.5/10
I get mainly on the drydown a soapy-soft herbal smell. It feels nice. Think it's a fragrance meant for special occasions: gala receptions, dinner parties, social events.
When I first smelled the opening, I winced a little...I thought "Another old school chypre, with that bitter bergamot opening," but this classic vintage opening very soon began to take on a life of its own. I have a new found respect for K1 and his nose, as I began to smell the beautiful florals very quickly becoming dominant. Lavender and carnation along with that soft geranium almost earthy herbal scent...this got interesting. At the same time a very powdery quality began to show itself. For whatever reason, I have become very partial to powdery drydowns in my favorite chypres. When I smell powder mixed with a wonderful mix of animalic leathery scent and potent sandalwood, I feel very at ease. I find it relaxing and mesmerizing.
So the "old fashioned" opening only lasted a few minutes before a chorus of beautiful florals began their hypnotizing song, and then soon joined by base of powdery leathery sandalwood. There is even a gorgeous spicy tobacco quality to this. This seems to have a mix of notes from two of my favorite fragrances, Boss Spirit and the original Gucci Pour Homme chypre of the 70's. This is worth a sniff. Those who appreciate complex fragrances, will certainly enjoy this speedy journey from top to bottom. I am really enjoying this, and can't stop sniffing my wrist whenever I spritz this on. Happy sniffing!
Have you smelt floral pattern in it as I did?
I like it and maybe I buy it in the future, I know it's long lasting and spreading and chic; but something about Ferre perfumes that I'm curious about is their floral pattern in masculine perfumes. It doesn't annoy at all. It's a perfume for dandy men but so ceremonial too! Extremely seductive and charming both in scent and the bottle.
It's both clean and smoky but more clean, a bit floral and this floral pattern makes it so chic and luxury, young, ceremonial, old, classic, reminds baroque art, rich, exotic, indoor, manly, vintage, friendly but serious, complex and amazing.
It opens vintage and chic and goes to a bit more floral. It opens with citruses and herbs but in classical way. As it goes herbs and spices come up and again in classical way. Jasmine, juniper berries, lavender and geranium from the middle notes and fig leaf from the base are obviously smellable. It's so hard to describe, it's so complex and strange. Chic Chic Chic! and Luxury.

i love this fragance,it has a beautiful scent !!!!!
I bought Franco's perfume for a girlfriend in the late Eighties because I felt it described the times and arrogance of the day. She loved it.
I bought Franco's pour homme a few months ago (from a discount perfumer) because I remembered Maria's excitement and I wanted to remember what the Eighties smelled like. Bingo! This scent reeks of 1987-89. If there were one idiot at the office who thought this was 'modern', I'd have to vote him off the island! Wear this only for Halloween if your dressing up as a character from Miami Vice.
This scent foold me and still fooling me somhow.
This 80'ies starts with sharp blast of few seconds...than the magic starts to work. It gets bitter, lemoney, herbal and spicey. I dont know how they manege this combination, it is changing evry time i wear it. right now in the fall it gets really soapy/powdery with a hint of sharp herbs. in the summer fresh lemoney and very spicey.
Only thing i dont like it they way it is presented.
the bottle needs a simple up-date. imagin it as a dark brown with golden letters only. No black just transparant brown and golden letters. this will work fantasticlly.
I prefere to wear this scent in fall and the winter. it is a friendly and easy to wear scent with a very niche character.
