My dear friend Yamba1 first sent me a sample of this some months ago - loved it, and now have been lucky enough to pick up a mini in a mixed bunch of bottles from ebay. I will use this sparingly as it seems hard to find now. I am extremely happy to have it!
It is a mature and delicious green/floral/soft spicy frag with excellent staying power, as were most of the perfumes from around that era (what has happened to longevity lately??)
Glamorous, classy, IMO classic chypre, not for the teens or 20's woman.
I will have to try and score a bigger bottle. Thanks Yamba1 for really starting this love affair!
aldehydes, oakmoss and vetiver. Green, woody, soapy and I like such composition a lot. Perfect for lovers of such kind of perfume. It is totally chypre (but there is no sharpness which makes me dislike some fragrances) on my skin, not floral. Highly recommended for everyone at least to test.
(I have the edp)
Some very strong scents suggest wearing with restraint if not caution. Not Scherrer. This is the kind of heavy, bruiser of a green chypre that I just want to drench myself in. It is powerful and unashamed and urges me be likewise.
Sometimes my mind remembers Scherrer as almost pure oakmoss. But then I put it on again and the galbanum jumps up in front of me and the floral heart just shouts at me. This baby is loud but beautifully blended, with bitter fruity tartness (bergamot, mandarin?) and dark, spicy dry florals.
Scherrer is that uncommon, but thrilling reminder that seduction doesn’t always take place sotto voce, or catch you against your better judgement. Scherrer calls to you with full-throated come-ons and wants you to feel the enticement. Scherrer is more pick-up than courtship, more tryst than date.
A stunning early 80's Chypre/white floral and at a time when perfume had backbone, a rich heady cocktail of galbanum, oakmoss, hyacinth, violette, jasmine & orris. The pure parfum was incredibly beautiful, a deep gold & emerald hued juice with similarities to the original formulation of Chanel 19. The amalgam of the dark green notes, orris and indolic white jasmine/tuberose/gardenia resulted in a rare, almost metallic edge to the crisp verdant dry down. This effect can be experienced in other now discontinued classic perfumes such as Paco Rabanne's 'Calandre' & the original 'Ma Griffe' by Carven. Sadly 'JLS' is one of many now lost to the ether never to pass this way again, I imagine many factors come into play with these discontinued greats, between IFRA regulations and the ever increasing cost of raw materials the chances for re-formulation are very slim !
"I want to be.....alone..." Old school Hollywood class in a bottle. A fierce green chypre that is as elegant and distant as they come. If your man is mucking you about, dress up, spritz this and walk... without a backward glance.
Let me start by saying that i do not like green perfumes. But if every chypre would smell like this one i wouldn´t mind to wear them at all.
It is very intense and woody-green fragrance that is for a classy lady. Firt outburst can scare you off, like it did happen with me, but then i began enjoying it. When the first reaction to "skankiness" is gone in minutes the flowers are beautiful. Then the woody drydown comes at the end and it is bewitching.
It reminded me of "Mystere" by Rochas, but this one is much more better to me, more feminine. It also has some similarities with Clinique´s "Aromatics elixir" but waaay more better and softer i think. At least i can wear this one and "elixir" just turns me completly off.
I have tried the EDT version and i can clearly imagine that the EDP or pure perfume would be much better and softer.
Classic in one word.
Can anyone tell me who makes this clearly reformulated version of JLS? I have worn it for 20 years and was disappointed beyond words when I realised that i could no longer get it. Now I find that I can - on E-Bay, via Kuwait, but the scent is not quite the same. It's very pleasant but not unforgettable in the way that it was. If Scherrer Parfums is still in operation, who runs it - I thought that Scherrer had closed down in 2009. Any information about this greatly appreciated, thanks.
Let me just start by saying....enough with these discontinuations of fragrances so many have come to love over the years. I just can't believe this perfume can no longer be found, but in the words of Morrissey...."What Difference Does It Make"....they aren't listening to us, they don't care.. I've said it before, and I'll say it until my last day....I wish time machines were in existence...notice that I didn't say, I wish they were real....I believe in time travel, I do....I also believe in ghost, goblins and the those little creatures from "The Neverending Story"....so take that as you wish.
Jean Louis Scherrer's 1979 classic, "Scherrer" is probably one of the greenest, earthiest, deep, dark and most haunted forest floor enthraller a fragrance around. It evokes a time that is no more, a time that, if you lived it, you were one of the lucky one's. It is a look back to a decade that gave the world some of the most captivating genre of fragrances ever created.
Scherrer starts with lots of cassia, orris root(which has an extremely woody, slightly musty vibe),jasmine and lots of green notes....think, dark green ivy vines, damp, dirt covered pine needles...that sort of green. It also brings to mind an old attic that has been closed up for 30 years. There are aldehydes in the top, but to me, they do not dominate, so if you don't like aldehydes, don't be put off by trying this fragrance, as they really are not center stage here. That was the top and middle notes. Now, the wicked thunderstorm of base notes is where the ghouls and goblins lurk. If you, like me, are a fan of that ever controversial, and much missed note, oakmoss, then you must track down Scherrer. The oakmoss, patchouli, vetiver, the sharp green forest notes from the top still hanging in, all of these notes combine to make this perfume what it has become over the last 32 years, and that is....a bewitching, brooding wooded chypre of the ever so missed and fantastical 1970's. I would agree, that it does indeed resemble Clinique's 1971 classic, Aromatics Elixir shifted down about four gears. If you have always liked that one, but found it too strong, you might try Scherrer.
In keeping with songs that describe a certain fragrance, as by now, if you've kept up with these long and entangled reviews of mine, know that I must end with, I would connect Scherrer with 1982's "Only The Lonely" by the legendary early 1980's new wave group, "The Motels", fronted by the beautiful Martha Davis. This fragrance brings about a very dark mood for me. It is one of the few I turn to on the darkest, stormiest, enshrouded grey cloud days. A classic, to say the very least. I'll always love Scherrer, and I'll miss it like no other when the day comes that it can't be found anymore, which is slowly and sadly coming true. Don't worry my 70's and 80's, I'm coming home soon.
You can’t sniff JLS without getting slapped in the face by the 80s glory note. My mind took it a step further and added a soundtrack: the Dallas theme song, season 3. JLS shouldn’t be introduced without it; this is Sue Ellen’s signature scent, no questions asked.
But my, what a big girl scent this is. My version is vintage, but I’m not sure of the year. I immediately detected the green notes (hyacinth), and a luscious, full bosomed base. I can’t imagine wearing this scent for fun. This must be worn with a purpose. Preferably one that comes with high heels, a short skirt, a tight fitting top and a top shelf martini. I will be setting this sample aside for those nights when I’m heading to the City for cocktails and a show. It’s just loud enough to get you noticed, and just refined enough to keep the other patrons guessing what you’re up to.
Good stuff, but like the show, the earlier versions are better.
Thanks to kittykati, I have a generous sample of this perfume. I am immediately struck by the white flowers. There is a powdery-ness to it, similar to other classic aldehydes -- but not as dry, much "brighter". It does remind me of a lovely bar of soap -- maybe goat's milk soap. I'm not getting green on my skin -- just long-lasting florals. And (I know I shouldn't read reviews before I do my own, but...) Calyx is spot on: yes, there is something Aromatics Elixir about it, but quieter.
Strong -- a little dab'll do ya!
Verry sharp, green and prickly opening.
Latter, could smell chypre accords, but just a little.
Unusual combination of flowers, I would say tuberose and gardenia on a green way, mixed with cedar and oakmoss.
Glamorous and memorable.
Striking, for person with interest personality.
This is a MUST for classy woman. Very, very nice. Opens soapy and little bit sharp (do soap tend to be sharp?). Settles down to a wonderful florar, with great silage and at the drydown the civet hits so seductive and animalistic. I don't think that I could wear this perfume in public, but it's on my list to gift mom, it could be a perfect one for such a strong, mature woman.
One word: REFINED
I have been personally wearing this one for about a year now and it always gets noticed in a nice way. I used to wear it when I was much younger and it always got the same reaction.Hard to get in this Aus but well worth the search.
I do not see the pine note here, but it is in here for sure! GREAT perfume!
I first tried this wonderful fragrance as a sample in Singapore in 1981. I was enroute to Sri Lanka and wore this complex and intoxiating fragrance during the trip. JLS was the perfect scent to wear whilst sipping coktails on a balmy evening. Since then, I have never been without this manificent perfume, and I know I will always receive compliments each time I wear it. Great sillage and lasting power around 6-8hrs. Hard to find in Australia so you can be assured this will attract attention. Although first worn as a late teen, this perfume will grow with you. Definitely a must have!
I personally prefer this perfume to the Scherrer II.
A bit soapy drydown, and very fress.
For summer it is a great choice for over 35. I wish I discoverd it before I purchased Donna Trussardi, since goes much better with my skintype.

Alguien me puede informar donde adquirir el agua de perfume de Jean Louis Scherrer, ya que me dicen que la han retirado aquí en Barcelona.
Hi just wondered if any one can tell me where to buy the Jean-louis-scherrer perfume in Paris?
Yesterday I finally received my big bottle of this!!!
Heaven on earth!!
One of the nicest green fragrances ever made in my opinion.
I love this one madly - it's my favorite green Chypre of all time and I have adored it for many years. I just found a bottle of the vintage EDT in excellent condition, and it still makes me swoon! It is equally suitable for very grown-up ladies and femmes fatale - and even better if you happen to be both! :-)
An old style aldehydic black tie with fruit components. Nice, but a little too fruity for my taste and more formal than I usually go for.
I just got a bottle of this in a swap tonight, and I'm already falling in love! It reminds me a bit of Aromatics Elixir--but warmer, and not quite as loud. I've been sniffing my wrist ever since I put some on three hours ago, and I'm smelling a lot of moss and wood, but NO vanilla. If it weren't listed in the notes, I'd never have known there was vanilla in it.
I have the older version which is full of oakmoss and a bottle of the tree moss newer version.
Both bottles are green lush and lovely, but the vintage stuff is breathtakingly beautiful (heartbreakingly if you are a big oakmoss fan and rue the new trend toward less moss). It is a work of art, a rare jewel and a tribute to women, a lioness of a scent.
The new version is not nearly as predatory but is still a gorgeous green floral.
I don't think my nose is as good as other people's, but I'll review it anyway lol. I did a review yesterday on Fleur de Rocaille saying it smelled a little like Downy Fabric Softener. My husband agreed, so I guess it wasn't just me.
Anyway, this one reminds me of Irish Spring soap scent. I didn't want to write this, but this is what I think of when I smell it. I love it though, and I'm happy I found it thanks to this site.
One of my absolute favourites (I wouldn't want to live in a world where this - and my other favourite fragrances - didn't exist). It's pure joy: the happy laughter of a dynamic, urban, very pretty young woman whose life is full of warmth and success. (Obviously, this is a highly personal impression - but then, perfume is all about personal impressions.;))
I think it's one of the greatest UNDERRATED fragrances of all times,
Well, ladies... so much the better for us who do know it and love it! ;)
Wow! There is so much to love in Jean-Louis Scherrer for Women! I wonder why this fragrance never became popular here in America?
I detect in this scent many individual notes I love from other classic perfumes: the soapy aldehydes of Chanel No. 5, the flowers of L'air du Temps, the "green" of Ma Griffe, the animal-moss drydown of Cabochard. Yet it all blends beautifully into an elegant composition that is totally distinct from those other fragrances I just listed.
The persistence on this one is amazing, too. I dabbed some on at 8:00 AM and it is more than 12 hours later, still going strong. (I have the Eau de Parfum.)
I have three generous-sized sample vials to use up, but this one is definitely full-bottle-worthy, especially since it is available here in the US at great prices!
Got a big thumbs-up from the Husband as well. That's not a requirement for me to like a perfume or not, but it's nice when I can find something we both enjoy. :-)
An amazing, green, long-lasting, seductive, original, complex. harmonious scent. This is my all time favorite chypre. I prefer Jean-Louis Scherrer to better known chypre classics. I discovered it in the mid-80's because a very fashionable student from Romania wore it every day. I finally asked what it was, and she told me. It was a gift from her boyfriend in Paris At that time you couldn't find it anywhere in the States, so I had to wait months until I was in France to buy it. It may have been more popular in Europe, but in the States it was--and still is--a unique scent. Gorgeous. Green. Glamorous. Rather bold. And it goes on and on.
A very French perfume, beautiful, radiant, green and a true classic. The first deep sniff you take of it will tell you what an outstanding perfume this is. The green chypre notes are used in a very controlled way, it is not sharp (like Chanel 19) and therfore very sensous. Fantastic! Give it a try!
I have it too, I love it because my mom was using this in the early 80s, and in my country it was a hit so every woman was using it. For me it is not for every time, but can be used day and night.Mum was using it for BED TIME
I own EDP and love it! It is amazingly long lasting. Those green notes make it suitable for any time of the year. I should add that this is the only fragrance I own which was complemented by a stranger.
