Jo Malone has presented an exotic composition inspired by blossoming of vanilla orchid on Madagascar. Its composition opens with fresh Sicilian bergamot accords, along with Tunisian neroli, wild fennel and star anise. A heart blooms with tuberose, violet vanilla orchid, jasmine, frangipani and cloves, while a base incorporates ambergris, vetiver, Bourbon vanilla absolute and tonka. The fragrance is available in amount of 30 and 100 ml (1.0 and 3.4 oz). This fragrance arrives in sale in September 2009. Its intention is that the fresh and natural notes of Vanilla & Anise would remind you of summertime.
The nose behind this fragrance is Celine Barel.

Loving that anise smell, i get whiffs of it whenever i move. So simple yet warming and seductive. Really long lasting.
got a sample of this and decided to order a full bottle. I love this. It is simple, basic, and linear, yet it was love at first sniff. Vanilla & anise & a little clove..yep, that's it. I dont get any of the other notes. But what I get is enough to make me really love this scent. Unfortunately, it's gone after an hour and half...but so what..I'll just spray more. This is a nice vanilla, not strong, not cloying, not the oriental type. This perfume is warm, sorta sweet, and different (to me, at least). yummy vanilla, licorice-y and medicinal clove. never would've thought I'd like something with vanilla in it, but there ya go. I should be getting my full bottle in the mail tomorrow.
I'm not crazy about Vanilla & Anise by itself, but my husband really likes it (go figure). My husband doesn't like sweet vanilla scents, and this dry, cool vanilla is fresh-smelling, and not dessert-like. The anise adds an earthy, mellow note that gets a bit too strong on my skin. To me this fragrance needs something else to make it enjoyable...like cinnamon, or chocolate, or even some sweet vanilla. However, when I layer Vanilla & Anise with Jo Malone Red Roses, I get a rosy Turkish Delight-type fragrance that I love. I can't get enough of Jo Malone Colognes and their endless combinations of beauty. Even if I don't go nuts over Vanilla & Anise alone, it layers extremely well with nearly all the others I own.
very unorigonal. Not very impressed.
I got a small bottle of this as a gift. I'm not mad about it, but that little bottle stays in my purse as my "ohmigod - I left the house with no perfume" perfume. Emergency use only...but easy to wear with anything.
For me it smells like an old classic... Too old-fashioned to wear. The smell of retirement.
I too got a slight medicinal note at the top which does fade quickly into a classy mellow vanilla scent. More femme then not but in a way that should not prevent gents from wearing it.
For as many notes listed here (where are they?)this is a fairly linear smelling fragrance.
Enjoyable in an easy comfortable way. This does not require your attention. Wear it and go.
Sillage and longevity are average.
This is initially a bit medicinal on me, perhaps due to the warming anise note. The dry down is lovely, hints of mellow vanilla with a touch of spice to add depth. My favourite Jo Malone fragrance. I don't think I'll invest in a bottle as this reminds me a lot of Jennifer Aniston's perfume which I already have, but it is a lovely scent.
Warm, cozy and pleasant. On me it was very straightforward, no surprises or hidden depth. I had high hopes because the anise is somewhat unusual (and I love anise) but I thought it was a little boring. But my husband loves it! I'd say it's worth a try, I can definitely see how many people would love this one.
To me this smells like crabtree & evelyn's vanilla something back in the early 90's. It's a barely there sweet vanilla that has to warm on your skin.
My DH thinks this smells sickley, but I think it smells heavenly. The fennel and clove really come thru, especially on warm days. I feel apart of the landscape when I wear this. It reminds me of warm baked clay.
Sometimes I get great silage others times it's very modest. Just like the sun, sometimes it shines bright other times it stays behind the clouds.
I think this is too edible to actually wear.
The tonka and vanilla are veery sticky, I would say its almost unwearable, but it can be mixed with something :) Maybe something citrusy or very sweet floral to freshen up that sticky tonka note.
The Lime Basil & Manderine goes ok with it.
Use the Vanilla Anise first as a base.
What a gorgeously penetrating scent! The opening is typically fresh for a cologne; the fragrance is anything but ordinary--bergamot, anise and a green herbal twist courtesy of fennel. A little bitter and sharp, but well tuned by the sweet neroli.
The heart becomes reminiscent of sweet, aromatic fresh licorice with waxy tropical flowers gently swaying in and out. Clove keeps the composition piquant, occasionally surfacing with little random bites. During this phase, the fragrance makes me feel a little restless with its lively personality. It keeps my interest none-the-less.
The drydown is girlishly tomboy. Sweet, aromatic, warm yet sparkling, remaining fresh in every way. I'm so glad to have been introduced to Jo Malone with this intriguingly mischievous cologne.
Another winner from Jo Malone! I like almost all of them, in spite of being apparently simple scents with only two notes there. Two notes are usually dominant but the other ones make a beautiful background like unheard notes in a symphony. Vanila & Anise is a lovely, sweet and slightly powdery vanilla with a big star anise on top! Vaguely reminding of L'Heure Bleue like a fraction of it!
I wish that the flowers were more noticeable anyway and unfortunately the lasting power is quite poor on me, otherwise it would have made a beautiful, warm, feminine scent for winter.
Thanks, Clairdelune, for sharing this one with me.
I'm really digging Vanilla Anise so far. It certainly has something in common with Lolita Lempicka, which I also love and wear, but Vanilla Anise is softer, less sweet and more unisex. This would be an excellent daytime alternative to LL, or for days when you don't want a scent with so much projection.
My first thoughts upon spritzing: root beer! After it dries down a bit, I find it reminds me of another big perfume I love: Givenchy's Ange ou Demon. (But as with LL, it's a shy, soft-spoken cousin to the Givenchy.)
I also noticed an unusual (and not bad) characteristic with Vanilla Anise that I haven't noticed in other scents. The sillage of this fragrance smells different than the aroma I encounter when I bury my nose in my wrist. The sillage is a bit sweeter, but a close-up sniff has a pronounced vetiver note. Very dry and grassy, and much less sweet.
I agree with the other comments that it is fairly linear and not especially original or ground-breaking, but it sure smells nice. Might be my favorite Jo Malone of all I have tried so far.
Like all Jo Malone, this was refreshingly different from the cloying mainstream alternatives.
On me it is very spicy, the top notes dominate and never quite seem to fade and the tuberose is distinct. The vanilla is barely there until it begins to wear down and I actually layer this over vanilla body butter, as it softens the edge of the spices.
Unfortunately this doesn't last for as long as I'd like, given the price, but seems to like to cling to the body butter, which helps it to maintain overall.
Jo Malone does list this a a Spicy scent, and with how it smells and the notes I have no idea how this is classified as Floral Fruity Gourmand.
I think this is JL's answer to the original Lolita Lempicka. The two scents have four big notes in common; anise, violet, vanilla and tonka. And while the scents are not by any means twins, to me there is a resemblance, mainly in how persistently sweet they both are, as well as what I can only describe as a heaviness, or maybe intensity is a better word.
While I can't wear LL at all despite numerous attempts, I did manage to co-habitate fairly comfortably with the JL today.
As others have described, the Malone, like most Malones in my experience, was pretty linear--no real evolution from beginning to end. I really didn't perceive the other notes listed--it was just mainly sweet and syrupy. Pleasant but not ground-breaking in any way. It did have really impressive staying power, which has not been the case for the many of the JL's I've tried so it earned big points there.
If you like anise and enjoy a sweet, persistent scent that stays with you all day, you might really enjoy this one. Oh, and I found the scent to be quite feminine even though it's listed as unisex.
Great for vanilla fans like me, who love that vanilla smell, but don't want to feel like we've been walloped over the head by a giant custard bomb (naming no names, but there's some hideous vanilla MONSTERS out there!). I would class this as a vanilla frag for grown-ups- nicely tempered by the sharpness of the bergamot, cloves and anise. Yes it's pretty simple and linear like all Jo Malones, but what's wrong with that? Sometimes I like my frags to smell the same when I go to bed as they did when I put them on hours earlier- i f I like it, I like it- end of. In short, very nice and if you like even a couple of notes and especially vanilla, I think you'll like the whole thing.
It is just Vanilla and Anise.Funny, but I do not smell any other notes hier. Too simple and too unisex. I'm not a fan of unisex fragrances.
нежный, тонкий, действительно летний аромат... после Ив Роше непереношу запах ванили, но этот аромат просто прелесть!!!!!!!!!
This is a dead ringer for the Jean Paul Gautier "classique" female fragrance. The pink bottle with the bustier shape. Its vanilla bourbon, anise seed and soft florals all mixed together. Vanilla Anise is not bad, but I prefer the JPG classique for lasting power, sillage and for the money..
I sampled it with Orange Blossom bath oil. I ended up buying the Vanilla & Anise perfume! It's very light and sweet without being overpowering, clingy or headache-inducing. It lasts all day without really changing much. It's pretty casual with a little sophistication so can be worn at work or play.
This scent is powdery and feminine -- just completely gorgeous! The vanilla/tonka notes are warm and lovely rather than having that icky sweetness that overpowers many vanilla scents. The fennel and star anise help to offset the sweetness and their black liquorice undertones add a dash of quirkiness to the whole mix. I sampeled over Christmas and for me the cloves (as listed in the notes) made it perfect for the season, however, it is light enough to wear any time of the year, day or night.
I love this scent of Jo Malone so much.
The best scent that make me feel comfort and relax. not too sweet as other brand in Vanila version.
Good Job!! I am your fanclub Jo Malone. I enjoy combining so much. Love you. You are fantastic.
