Middle Notes
Base Notes
Let me start by saying that this is one of my favorites, despite the accepted lack of longevity. I get decent enough projection, but like many others noted, the longevity of this one is not very good. However this doesn't stop me from loving the cologne.
For me, the top notes are a very sweet rhubarb, berry, and tonka mix. It is not sickly sweet, but still very sweet and warm. It almost reminds me of Thanksgiving desert, creamy fruit pies. If you are not a fan of sweet fragrances this might be a little off putting, but the rest of the fragrance is much less sweet.
The middle notes, on me, are defined by the Balsam fir. When the balsam fir begins to kick in with the remnants of the fruit notes, this fragrance reminds me of Christmas. Along the lines of Burberry London, Vintage is a perfect winter holiday scent between the sweetness and the balsam.
The base is where the 'vintage' really kicks in, mainly the tobacco note. The sweetness has mostly dissipated at this point, and Vintage turns into a mix of balsam fir and strong tobacco. Just a perfect dry down for the name of the cologne and what it tries to do.
Finally, one of my favorite parts about this cologne is the presentation. The bottle is well made, creative, and truly has a vintage feel with the leather band. Proud to have this one in my collection, displayed right in front.
All in all, one of my favorites.
ok, but not very remarkable. Like a lot of today's fragrances.
I bought this for my husband and love it so much, I wear it all the time!
Just bought this fragrance and ive got to say....love it,great smell and packaging. Not the longest lasting scent but worth it.
My wife said it smelled like a teenager, not a man...whatever.
My daughter said a funeral home...
I like it though
Didn't like this one at first. Bought with a gift certificate, the store only really had popular fragrances, nothing really interesting there. This was the most unique one that I could pick out of the lot, so I bought it.
A warm and sweet opening, I get berries and a sort of sticky sweetness from the tonka. I feel it is on the verge of being a little too sweet. Nice and warm, good for this type of cold weather.
The dry-down is pleasant. Inviting and rich, yet very subtle. A bit of woods and tobacco. It took me a while to figure this one out, though I suppose it's because I really haven't sampled much like this. Kudos to John Varvatos for breaking the mould of modern men's fragrance. This ain't no Acqua di Gio.
Didn't know if I should wear this to work, it's a bit on the sensual side. Honestly I feel like a bit of a tart wearing this. While this is different from the norm, it is subtle and innoffensive enough that most people won't mind it. Projection is okay, after a few hours stays pretty close to my skin. I find I have to press my nose right to my skin to smell anything. Longevity isn't great.
For the price at retail (YMMV), I figured I would have gotten a bit of longevity out of this, unfortunately it's a bit disappointing. Though, I suppose this isn't really an "all day" scent. This would be good for a proper date, though she may only be able to smell it if she gets really close.
I could tell you how great this fragrance is with 200 adjectives but I can sum it up in four words...Nectar of the Gods
10/10
Sensual, intoxicating, masculine and intriguing...awesome fragrance. The bottle is definitely masculine and love the leather band around it as it gives hints of leathery notes in the frag. Varvatos Vintage is such a wonderful compliment to any fall or winter evening as the lavender, leather and suede notes untwine seamlessly and demand your attention. The musky tones are sweet and bald, though longevity isn't admirable. Nice, smooth, memorable sillage though. This one is a staple scent in my collection.
Longevity 7/10
Sillage 7/10
Scent 9/10
Royalty, in a bottle, man style....enuf said.
Vintage is surprisingly sweet, given its note pyramid, with the moist grapefruit and berry notes taking center stage in both the opening and the heart. Tobacco adds a temperate masculinity, and an hour after application a nice fir note accompanies the fruit and woods. All in all a nice fragrance, albeit a little too sweet for me.
دقیقا بوی مربای البالوی گرم را میدهد

Just the smell of warm cherry jam
Stay Mvtvst
For the cold season
Awesome stuff...
John Varvatos used to be found online for $30 a bottle 4.2 oz. Now it is hard to find for that price. If you want to try a cheaper option, go for C.O. Bigelow (at Bath and Body Works) Elixir Black. It smells very similar to both John Varvatos and Vintage. It is only $20 or less.
Superb masculine scent. Love when I wear it and get random people coming up to me asking what it is. Seems to seduce people..ha ha. Lasts a long time on me. Great for a night out on the town. Unique in it's own right...A must have.
I haven't smelled this but am curious, could a woman wear it or is it TOO masculine?
Sweet leathery scent with a touch of class! This fragrance is ideal for cool romantic evenings. longevity is good if you have tan/olive skin about 5hrs tops.

I bought this one on my father's birthday, it's a great scent.
I have a nickname for this cologne - Liquid Christmas. It is an amazing scent that shares many accords with my favorite frag of all time, BUT...it smells so much of the holidays that you can really only get away with it from Oct thru January.
my fave. from varvatos line, very underrated.
the opening kinda boozy with dried berries vibe. very alluring.
heavy tobacco note in mid and base note. but the berries feel still lingering.
silage is good for 2 hours, 3 hours max, then it dries down really close to the skin.
longevity kinda spotty on me, sometimes, 6 hours or less, sometimes more than 8 hours. depends on the humidity i guess.
very recommended for dating. or casual night out.
longevity : 7/10
projection : 7/10
overall smell : 9/10
recommended age : 24 and up
I just smelled it today, sprayed it on my arm and after a few hours i have the following conclusion: nice smell but not much different than the classic varvatos
An embossed leather band with gold stamped lettering stitched around an antiqued looking bottle? How could I not test this rugged looking beauty while on the hunt for a new fragrance for my hubby just this last Valentine's Day? Actually, I had in mind other options, but unfortunately where I live there is only one department store worthy of quality fragrances and my first choice wasn't there for me to sample, and I wasn't about to blind buy on a gift for my man.
Thanks to a fellow Fragrantican (I owe you MegaMrExclusive!), this suggestion was noted in my head, so when I saw this on the counter I had to try it. A spritz on a paper strip: fir, rugged, classy, outdoorsy, smokingly sexy. I definitely had my heart set on him liking this on himself (he claims he doesn't care what he smells like as long as I like it, but I can't enjoy it if I know that he doesn't).
Valentine's Day and I could tell he loved the bottle right on opening. He tries it on his skin... oh yes!
A delicious blend of sweet evergreen and spices and just enough earthiness to be taken seriously without being cynical or sombre. It seems like such a commonsense compostion for the rugged, intelligent, outdoor type that I'm surprised that this hasn't been done before--but it does smell refreshingly different with a slightly modern, yet classically natural vibration.
My husband is also one of the fortunate few who doesn't sweat much and doesn't stink even after a hard day's work, and fragrances seem to last on him forever. Needless to say, Vintage, despite reported lack of lasting power, has great longevity on him. And the dry down, although it stayed close to him, had me cosying up to him all day just to smell that spiked, smoky tobacco and leather in harmony with honeyed hay-like tonka. A scent with intimate proximity to share with someone special.
Anyway, my mountain trekking husband loves this, especially with it being reminscent of our Oregonian environment--sweet sun-toasted fir needles crunching underfoot. Perfect, like it was made just for him.
A trip to a lost garden located in edge of heaven!
This fragrance is too elegant and brings up youth masculinity. With that sharp blast it charms in a fashionable way.
It's a bit waxy, sweet, dusty and a little soapy and not a fresh bloom. It's the modernest chypre!
It opens strong, sweet and after a while it shifts to dusty and leathery with weakened sweetness.
This masterpiece offers a lonely walk in an chilly summer walk rejecting all noises! Something too chic and casual in a comfort way. Evokes all your good memories and gives you a sense of confidence.
If you're between 25~30 and still feel elegance and delicacy in yourself, try this one on your autumnal dress. Neglect all people and they sniffff after you!
longevity 5/10
sillage 9/10
scent 10/10
i want to like this so bad. i love the scent, but it just wont last...
a real shame
I find Vintage to be an interesting gourmand. When I first tried it, it made me think of gin. This makes sense, since the juniper berry is one of the primary ingredients in the production of gin. It is sweet, but not excessive or cloying. I can't wear most sweet fragrances, but I do enjoy JV Vintage. The sillage is not excessive. Nice manly dry-down with patchouli, leather and a very prominent tobacco. Longevity on me is 8-10 hours.
Having said this, I don't like JV Vintage nearly as much as its brother, the original John Varvatos, which is my favorite gourmand and one of my top five fragrances. Vintage is in my rotation and wear it when I am in the mood, probably every couple of weeks. Overall, I give it a thumbs-up.
Very nice, sweet opening. A butch version of Calvin Klein Euphoria for women. I did two sprays on my wrist at 5pm. It's 8:30pm now and the scent is about gone. Horrible longevity for a fragrance. Will not be buying this.
It is a disappointing fragrance for me. i didn't like it at all, a kind of sweet and a bit smoky musk fragrance. got a poor silage and longevity. the only thing i liked about it is its initial notes other than that below average fragrance.
I give it 4 out of 10.
According to the PR from the company distibuting this fragrance the notes are: rhubarb, santolina, quince paste, silver absinthe, marine fennel, cubeb peppers, juniper berries, white lavender, cinnamon tree leaves, jasmine, orris root, patchouli, oak moss, fir balsam, ash wood, tonka beans, tobacco leaf, madras wood and suede accents.
It is described as classic, distinctive and smooth...
To my nose this goes on very very sweet & even in the drydown stays fairly sweet. That's not a bad thing, just an observation.
It's very warm, pleasant & a bit smokey too. Probably best kept for intimate occasions as it stayed pretty close to my skin. Longevity is not too bad though; about 5 hours on me.
what a class !!!!
Smell is elegant.
Doesnt last much long. In winter, it lasts a bit longer. Its good for evening wear.
A Winter treasure indeed. Warm but not obvious. Classic without being stiff. Longevity was missing for me but still a special scent for a night out with your lady.
clear clean cool.
polite in the way of current time.
to me it's a smoky-woody-prunes scent!!! so sexy and mesmerizing!!!
vintage have that mature smell that's sweet, cinnamonly, woodsy that carries a slight leather note with warm tobacco scent like a smokeless smoker. if you're bald and clean this scent doesn't match you. on the other side if you have a quite matured edgy face with long hair and messy outlook, this would well suit you almost any season, even summer. however vintage is not for a 18 yrs old punk whose attitude is too stupid to suit this precious bottle.
LOVE THIS! Extremely manly, without a musky accord. Very sexy
almost too grown man for me. it smells like one of the creeds, but i cant remember which one
Warm, leathery scent, with a touch of sweetness that is perfect for a warm fall evening.
Not long-wearing, but a pleasant, unique scent.
Very fine designer perfume! Composition / notes are quite distinctive and not easy to match with any other blend, few ingredients are used in perfumery for the first time by Varvatos. ""Vintage"" as name suggests that is of High Quality, Classic and Modern.
Top notes are decorated with Tamarind, Herbs and Date Fruit; Heart contains Coriander, Clary Sage Flowers (to give a pleasant tobacco affect) and Indian Ajwain; Base is composed of Auramber (rich wooden ambery material), Sandalwood, Balsams, Leather and Vanilla.
Most suitable for evening wear in cooler days and has elegance to match any special occasion with nice silage and longevity.
